    Looking back at last Quarter

Taking the Lead in your Life and Your WorldCoaching Seminar - June 14, 2006

Coaches: Nancy Ancowitz, Michael Weitz, Marianna Lead, Margaret Gomez andBernie Siegel with Pres. Vivian Velasco

On June 14, the chapter hosted an event at the Philippine Center that ex-posed chapter members and other young Filipinos to the possibilities ofhaving a coach for work and for life. Over 100 young people attended theevent. Deputy Consul General Millie Sta. Maria Thomeczek provided theopening remarks for the night before the coaches took over for the night. Each coach focused on a different aspect of life that we could improve on.Below is some of the key learning from that event.

Identify and overcome your mental blocks Learn the power of affirmations and reframing to build confidence

and effectiveness.Define your vision for leadership in career and life

As a leader you are a visionary and your own best source of wis-dom. Trust and act on your instinct.

Make your vision specific and vivid. Find photographs and useyour imagination to create specific images of your goals. Keep ajournal and refer to it often to continuously engage in pursuit ofwhat you want.

Avoid burnout on your path to success Acknowledge your stress, identify its causes and pick one source

of stress you will address today. Attaining peak performance by focusing on EQ (emotional intelli-

gence), which is a more important predictor of success in the

workplace than IQ. Great leadership has less to do with leading others and all to dowith knowing and managing ourselves.

Leaders attain and sustain peak performance through mindful-ness, passion and renewal.

Focusing on Six Adult Passions (1) Personal mastery claiming yourself, self-esteem, confidence

and courage Achievement proving yourself, winning, getting recognition and

results. Intimacy sharing yourself, making relationships work. Creativity and play expressing yourself, being spontaneous, in-

    tuitive, playfulness

Search for meaning finding wholeness, trusting in the flow oflife, spirituality

Compassion and contribution giving yourself, leaving the worlda better place, serving and bequeathing

Beyond Bragging: The art of Self Promotion Reduce nervousness in networking situations by actively listening

asking thoughtful questions, making eye contact, and being pre-sent (not worrying about what youll say next) rather than trying toimpress people.

Ask what your managers, colleagues and clients appreciate mostabout you. You may be surprised and you may learn that you

take many of your best traits for granted. Reflect often on your strengths and accomplishments. Write them

down and review them every day. By reminding yourself of whatyou do right, youll be able to present and promote yourself withmore confidence.

Self Promotion tips Be authentic when you present yourself Increase sales by targeting your audience Networking is a two-way street A sign of strong leadership is giving credit to your team members Line up your next opportunity while working on your current one. Get the support you need to achieve your goals.

After the presentation, several audience members were given one on onecoaching sessions with the coaches. If you are interested in contacting acoach, below are their bios and contact information. Live life!

Reaching out to friends andcommunities in need

3 million Filipinos less than 30,000 donorsBe a bone marrow donor today

In April 2006, Tambuli Editor Jocelyn Bernal attended a special mass foryoung people at the San Lorenzo Ruiz Chapel in Manhattan. It was therethat Christine Pecheras brother made an urgent appeal on behalf of hissister. Their family has undergone through so many tragedies with cancer. His familys story certainly touched the hearts of all those who were at themass. Afterwards, Jocelyn Bernal took the first step to saving a life signingup as a bone marrow donor. After seeing a special feature on television, adecision was made to make this a focus of our Tambuli issue this month.

The following is information from the Christine Pecheras website.

Christine Pechera isa family member, a

friend, a person - aloving person whoneeds yourhelp.Christine is battling non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and is in urgent need of abone marrow transplant.

Sadly, no matching donor has been found yet. There are over 20,000 differ-ent bone marrow types, and her best chance for a match is a donor of thesame ethnic background. Christine is a Filipina-American, and there aresimply not enough Filipino volunteer marrow donors in the National MarrowDonor Program (NMDP) Registry. Filipinos are one of the most under-represented groups.

Today, there are about three million Filipino residents in the United States. That's about one percent of the total U.S. population. If one percent of the

NMDP Registry were Filipino, there would be about 60,000 Filipino volunteerregistered donors. Today, we are well short of that number by about half.

We need your help to recruit Filipino volunteer donors, to give Christine afighting chance of finding a match. Please send e-mail to your friends andassociates now. Post to online boards. Call your newspaper. Ask your com-munity leaders to get involved --for Christine and for the many other peoplewho may walk one day down the same unfortunate path.

Through tireless marrow drives and gracious individual participation duringthe Save Christine! campaign, there are now thousands more Filipino volun-teer donors, a dramatic expression of caring that will undoubtedly save lives. But we need to keep going. There is still no match for Christine. As Christinewrites, "Have courage. Keep faith. Be strong. Don't wait."

Please join our challenge of finding Christine her miracle donor. Volunteer, contribute, sponsor a drive, spread the word. And, if you're Filipino, it's easyto be tested: just send for a FREE self-test kit. You simply swab your cheekswith cotton. No blood is involved for this test. A few minutes can save a life.

Anyone between the ages of 18 and 60 is a potential volunteer donor. Pleaseread about the NMDP and how you can join the registry today.

An Appeal for help - Filipinosstranded in Beirut

    Fellow Jaycees,

Fr. Gestie Advincula, is running a shelter in Our Lady of the MiraculousMedal Church Beirut, Lebanon for displaced OFWs. Unlike the US, thePhilippines does not have plans to evacuate its citizens. Fr. Gestie took upon

the overwhelming task of sheltering our kababayans who have beendisplaced by this unnecessary conflict.

Consider that our kababayans went to Beirut to work and are caught in asituation where they have to forget about their work and just worry aboutbeing alive. If this conflict does not end soon, our OFWs will need our helpjust to stay alive, to be provided with food and water. Please send whateveryou can spare.

I am attaching the most recent communique from Fr. Gestie. His church wasconverted to a shelter that could only accomodate 30, but has now 170+occupants.

I would like to appeal to your kind hearts to please help Fr. Gestie and theOFWs(Overseas Filipino Workers) in Lebanon. I am copying you the latest

    email from him.

The chapter may send monies directly or you may send monies through theVincentian Alumni International c/o Jesse Arteche, 1917 Morris Ave, Union,NJ 07083. 908-687-8787. Note: donations are not tax deductible. If we find atax-exempt org willing to act as conduit, we will issue you a receipt for taxpurposes. I will send whatever I get to Fr. Gestie through Western Union, almost weekly. Thank you for your help.

Sen. & Past President Jesse ArtecheFor any direct donations, please contact Sen. Jesse a

    [email protected] for the address

    From Fr. Gestie

This evening around 600 OFW went to sleep,if they could, in and around the

center - 250 in the usual hall, 300 in the secondary center and 50 in theparking area of our compound. I have to address since Sunday the dailyneeds for washing and shower, as well as for the drinking water. It will costme a $100 per day. Likewise I have to provide plastic plates, glasses andspoon every other day for convenience and our water expenses will not beincrease. This week we will be starting rescuing Pinays from constantlybombarded areas such as Zahle and the southern region. For this, I expectto spend $100 for transportation each time. For the place is far fromcivilization. So, Jesse, if you're asking for budget, I don't have any to tell youexcept for the emergency project that needs to be financed at the moment the rescue of stranded Pinays in the critical areas of the South: Tyre andSidon as well as the Bekaa valley region. For most of the Pinays, to berescued, couldn't afford to hire taxi's and baby buses to bring them to thecenter. Remember, some have already been abandoned by their employerswithout salary and food. 5 to 6 rescue operations is expected in the next 8 to10 days. Thanking God for your prayers.....Fr. Gestie

Apologies for our error in Last issueThe Tambuli staff wishes to apologize for an error in the caption onPage 1 of the summer issue. In the picture, Ray Villaflor was mis-identified as Jun Chua.

Almor D & Daniel Velasco took it to the ExtremeBy Almor Dayoan

The birthday gift I received from Pres. Vivian was a chance to relive my teenyears and to see some of the best wrestling on the planet - a ticket to see anECW show. If you dont know what ECW is, it stands for Extreme Champi-onship Wrestling. Now this isnt some WWF show, it was a hard hittinghardcore wrestling which had the toughestfans in the world. There were flaming

tables, sexually explicit women, barbwires, blood and not to mention fanscursing the hell out of anyone and anysituation. Then due to unfortunatebusiness dealing - when the executives ofECW couldnt get a TV deal - ECW wentunder.

The owner of WWE Vince McMahonbought the rights to ECW and took someof its wrestlers under his company. Thenafter five years, he decided to have a pay-per-view called ECW One Night Stand which was highly successful. So

success they had another this year and revive the ECW Banner. Of courseall of the hardcore fans like me were so excited. So when August 2, 2006came around, I was expecting so much. I never left an ECW disappointedback in the 90s and I was expecting that Daniel, his friends and I were goingto have the same experience.

When we entered the Manhattan center, we can hear the chants of E-C-W,but something was missing; something not right. Then I realized it, the ban-

ner had ECW written on it but it wasnt ECW. Not all of past wrestlers werethere, and they had WWE wrestlers in the main event. It didnt have thesame heart and passion. But what saved the night was the NY crowd whichis always intense. Being there with Daniel and his friends shouting out someof the crudest thing imaginable that even the Department of Sanitizationcouldnt clean up, was great. Even though the ECW show was toned down, was happy to see the teens experience a live ECW event. Although theWWE wrestlers felt the crowds disgust when they chanted change thef*@#ing channel, We want a refund, and We should riot, this responsewill hopefully open the eyes of Vince McMahon and let ECW be ECW onceagain. Im just happy and grateful that I got to be a wrestling fan during whatis said to be the golden age of wrestling.

Note: The author is offering ECW history lessons with his many tapes andDVDs that will show the hardcore ECW.
