On 12 June 2014, Airports Company South Africa launched its official Airports App. This free and user-friendly app was developed to assist travellers with navigating at airports, and allows passengers to make travel arrangements from their smart devices. The app is the first step towards an innovative, virtual airport service that will improve travel efficiency. “The objective of the app was to streamline and personalise the airport journey for passengers that are more empowered than ever before. We want to keep customers connected and we want to do it one step at a time. With this app we would like to connect the passenger to all information in our airport,” explained Airports Company South Africa Group Manager Customer Care, Claudia Ramsden. In addition to expediting airline and parking reservations, the app provides users with convenient tools to find shops and restaurants; airline, travel and traffic information; weather reports and customer care details. It will also assist passengers with planning alternative transport. Passengers travelling to Gauteng may synchronise with the Gautrain timetable as well.Currently, the app is downloadable on Apple IOS, Android and Blackberry devices- excluding the Q and Z series. According to

research conducted by Airports Company South Africa, 70% of the browsing traffic is on the IOS platform. The first phase of the app was therefore targeted at these user-platforms. Further improvements and additions to the current app can be downloaded via update notifications. The app is already available for download. Airports Company South Africa partnered with the Digital Solutions Group, University of Johannesburg faculty members and students in the IT- and engineering fields to present this new application.“The reality today is that the mobile device is something that will stay in aviation and will most probably become the predominant means of communicating with the passenger, but also giving a lot of the control back to the passenger. We actually control the journey; information around the journey and through that from checking yourself in, to following the process through the airport. In terms of the fast travel initiative, I think the South African aviation industry needs to embrace that we want to stay relevant in the world. The rest of the world is going self-service, and we want to make sure that we are not left behind. OR Tambo wants to maintain that standard,” concluded Andre Vermeulen, Acting Executive Airport Director. Airports App features:• Flights: Search for flights can be done via a flight number or an advanced search

option as well as checking in online. Once the flight is activated, any changes related to the flight will be visible to the passenger on their mobile device.• At the Airport: A list of the airlines that operate at the respective airports, as well as their contact numbers are provided. There is also a list of frequently asked information and contact details of the Customer Care department as well as the airport. Users will have access to a map of the airport developed in conjunction with TomTom and Micello Indoor Maps. This allows the passenger to search for, and be routed to, a location at the airport. Parking options and other information such as a parking cost calculator are also available. Weather updates of conditions at the airport are sent through on an hourly basis.• Shop and Dine: A selection of restaurants and shops to choose from can be searched either by category, terminal or name. A currency calculator is also available.• To and from the Airport: Traffic updates mean travellers can plan their trip to the airport more effectively. Also, there are listings and contact details of the car rental companies, Gautrain, taxis, and shuttle services. For more information about Airports Company South Africa’s Airports App, visit www.airports.co.za or phone the Customer Care line on 086 727 7888.

Gossip is the art of saying nothing in a way that leaves practically nothing unsaid – Walter WinchellSo let’s start by defining gossip so that we progress from the same page, lets us an elementary example so that no one is left behind – if it has nothing to do with you, if you don’t have first had facts, if it is not your news to share then it is probably better that

you keep your silence about it. Gossip is a weakness, but ironically gossip mongers feel that the possession of ‘information’, no matter how ill-accurate or malicious is something empowering - There is no greater lie, gossip has only one purpose, and that is to distract people who have nothing better to do and no better way to deal with the feeling of insufficiency. The other irony with gossip is that it is a phenomenon which plagues relationships which are meant to be solid. Friends, colleagues and even families fall prey to this destructive pastime and more surprising is that for as long as the human race has been in existence, there have been in lessons learnt from mistakes – learning lends itself to growing , but it seems we are

remaining primitive when it comes to gossip. I mean the facts are clear; nothing you say about me will remain undisclosed – we have all seen the total disintegration of seemingly solid relations due to a loose tongue. Due to the workplace being the place where we spend the major part of the day, workplace gossip can lend itself to severe stress and depression not only for the gossiper, or the receiver or the subject of the corridor chatter. Innovation, productivity, creativity and camaraderie also take a severe knock and often lead to a corporate depression which can easily be identified by employee dissatisfaction and an unstable environment. It was Socrates who said “strong minds

discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, and weak minds discuss people” Gossip at the workplace places the organisation at a serious risk of bleeding itself weak, whether the subject is customers or colleagues, because ultimately (when it inevitably comes out) it compromises the image of the company, it reputation and eventually the bottom-line. It is dangerous for leaders to ignore the signs of a deteriorating business culture. Strong teams do not just appear out of nowhere, strong teams are a direct result of strong leadership.Let’s chat, share your views on gossip and the effects thereof – email your comments to [email protected] or tweet @NietoVoice.

On 28 May 2014 tame TIMES published an article about a new development plan in Impala Park. The article reported that a property plan application for erecting a block of 16 flats on the corner of Canadair and Beechcraft Avenue in Impala Park has been sent to the municipality and council. The residents claimed that they were never given the chance to object to the plan, which they feel will compromise their privacy, among other reasons.

Response from Ekurhuleni City Planning:Alriech Bestbier, Area Manager: City PlanningBoksburg CCA writes:The subject application was submitted to the local authority and consequently circulated internally to the Council departments and ward councillor for comments. This alone means nothing, as the application still needs to be advertised in the newspapers and notices must also be displayed on the site itself inviting comments from the general public. In this instance there is no legislation forcing

the applicant to advertise the application to the public IMMEDIATELY (It is however still a requirement that must be complied with before Council can consider the application) and this then also implies that we cannot finalize the application as Council can, and will, only make a decision on the matter after considering all comments received from our internal departments, the ward councillor and the public via the said site notice and newspaper advertisements. In this regard it is confirmed that this application can really go nowhere unless it has been advertised and the said notices have been displayed on site. This usually happens soon after submission but in this instance the owner of the land does not wish to proceed immediately. It could be that he or she first wants to determine what the technical comments from internal departments are, or even to see what the service contributions from Council would be. All of this could influence the decisions and choices made by the applicant. The fact of the matter is that the community will have a chance to give input on the

proposed development through a process that is prescribed by law and which cannot be ignored by either the applicant or the local authority. So, as it stands currently, the application remains a mere proposal that can only be considered by Council once all legal prescribed notification processes have been finalised.

In the mean time the applicant has confirmed that the application was advertised in The Times and Beeld on 11 June 2014. The advertisement will appear in the same newspapers again on 18 June 2014. The notices have also been displayed on the subject site.

New development plan raises concern - response

Ekurhuleni Job Summit 2014

No work, no future for 36% of SA youth

On 11 and 12 June, the City of Ekurhuleni hosted the second annual Ekurhuleni Job Summit at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg. The aim of the summit was to explore options and partnership possibilities that will address job creation, poverty alleviation and inequality in Ekurhuleni and South Africa as a whole.Department Heads in Ekurhuleni, such as Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele; Deputy Minister of Public Enterprises Bulelani Magwanishe, and

pioneering businesspeople, such as Gold Plat CEO Dr Smith, and SEFA CEO Mr Tahini Makhuvha, among others, took part in the summit. According to Gungubele’s keynote address, the South African economy is currently characterised by weak demand and low business confidence. In Gauteng alone, the unemployment rate is 36.4%. According to the World Economic Forum’s latest Global Risk Report, South Africa has the third highest unemployment rate for the youth

(aged 15-24). With these realities in mind, the summit serves as a collaborative platform whereby possible solutions for these grim realities can be discussed and evaluated. One of the key issues discussed at this year’s summit was youth economic participation. Many of the speakers emphasised the need for entrepreneurship and creating employment above seeking employment opportunities. To achieve this goal, enterprises offering financial support for up-and-coming businesses/ economic initiatives are vital. The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), whose representatives were also present at the summit, is one example of such an enterprise. NYDA representatives highlighted the need for established senior businesses to incorporate the youth into their business endeavours, and to support them in the start-up phase of their businesses. In this way, more jobs will be created and the economic confidence of the youth will grow. The Department of Public Works has been assigned the goal of creating six million job opportunities by 2019, and NYDA is certain that entrepreneurship and youth incorporation into the private sector are two ways of achieving this goal. “Although we as government have a role to play, the private sector is the cornerstone of job creation, as it accounts for 90% of all jobs

in the developing world. Therefore, the collaboration between government and the private sector is of utmost importance,” Gungubele explained. The summit was not only attended by delegates and business pioneers, but also by young people, such as interns of the Department of Economic Development, who were there to learn from each other and to rub shoulders with potential business partners. In the light of Youth Month, the Ekurhuleni Job Summit is one way of setting up a local plan for addressing youth unemployment in a hands-on manner.

Divisional Head: Economic Development Projects, Ms Zanele Shabalala, addresses the summit participants.

Traditional dancers concluded the summit with a colourful African dance.

Almost 3 million South Africans between the ages of 18 and 24 are not in employment, education or training. (They are NEETs). One-third of our young men are jobless and almost 40% of our young women are unemployed. And the situation is becoming worse. Youth unemployment – according to the official figures from Statistics South Africa – has risen from 32,7% in 2008, to 36,1% in 2014. This means that over a third of South Africans between the ages of 15 and 34 have no income, no careers and very little, if any, work experience. Their lives are on hold. Unless they are fortunate enough

to find financial sponsorship, they cannot marry, buy houses or study. Consequently, they cannot pay tax or save for retirement. Many manage to subsist by sharing a grandmother’s pension or a child’s social grant. As a result, South Africa has a huge and dangerous imbalance between tax-consumers and tax-payers. We have about 16 million recipients of social grants but only about 5 million payers of tax. This is not financially sustainable, especially as the current population ages, and today’s tax-payers retire from their jobs to become pensioners. The situation is also not socially sustainable, especially as the numbers

of long-term unemployed youth grow. According to the latest figures released by the Statistician-General, almost half the youth in Free State are out of work and nearly two-thirds of 20- to 24-year-olds are in long-term unemployment. These are people with all the hope, energy and ambition of youth, but no future. The tragedy is that government has been vocal about promising jobs since 2004, raising hopes and aspirations but delivering little apart from an increase in civil service jobs and short-term Expanded Public Works Programme job opportunities that burden the tax-payer. South Africa has a serious

shortage of skills but an education system that is one of the worst in the world, especially in job-friendly subjects like mathematics and science. Most of our artisans are in their fifties, but we currently produce only 3000 a year in place of the 30 000 previously produced every year under the old apprentice system. Still, government – and even some members of the opposition – promise to create jobs even though it is universally acknowledged by economists that governments are unable to increase permanent, sustainable jobs and can do no more than to create a business-friendly environment for the private sector to do so.

Stolen vehicle recovered EMPD speed enforcement on P91, R21 freeway and Atlas Road netted thirteen motorists, who were all detained for excessive speeding.

The operations took place between Friday 6 June and Sunday 8 June.Nine speedsters were arrested on Sunday 8 June between 6:00 and 08:30 on R21 by Pomona bridge between Atlas and R23 turnoffs, which is a 120km/h zone. The highest speed of 179km/h was recorded by a 32-year-old male driver at 08:25 in a VW Golf Sedan who claimed he was rushing to church. The rest of the arrestees clocked speeds of between 170 and 161km/h. All the nine speedsters were charged with reckless and negligent driving at Kempton Park police

station. On Saturday 7 June, three drivers were locked up when caught going well over the speed limit of 80km/h on P91 between Rienert and Zuurfontein roads. The worst culprit clocked 118km/h and the remainder registered 112 and 113km/h. Their cases were registered at Sebenza police station.Friday 6 June operation yielded only one speedster on Atlas road between Bonaero and R21/Atlas turnoff which is an 80km/h zone. The South African Weather Services has cautioned the public against extreme cold weather conditions to be experienced in the interior parts of the country. Temperatures are expected to be very low and members of the public are consequently warned to be extra cautious when keeping themselves warm by means of house-hold energy sources during winter. Ekurhuleni Emergency Services is on high alert and ready to respond to any fire-related challenges which could take place during winter, but is asking the public to be aware of fire safety issues at all times. They warn that all types of heaters, paraffin lamps and stoves, fire places, braziers, dry vegetation around residential areas, overloading of electric points and self-connections are some of

the common causes of devastating fire-related incidents.Safety tips: • Never leave heaters unattended at home, at the office or in any structure, as this might result in unnecessary fires. Always place heaters in the centre of the room away from anything that could easily catch fire.• Avoid leaving heaters switched on overnight while sleeping, or during the day while the family is at work.Matches are not toys - keep them away from children. Children who play with lighters and matches tend to cause fires! In case of burn wounds:• Use cold water only, and only cold water!• Medical burn shields are the only approved wound dressings for burn wounds.

Every year National Epilepsy Week is celebrated to raise awareness about epilepsy (a neurological condition

characterised by unusual electrical activity in the brain). Even though it is the most common neurological condition in the world, it is still very much misunderstood. This year, National Epilepsy Week will be celebrated from 16 – 22 June.

Although South Africa has ratified international treaties, established various policies and guidelines and recognised the right to non-discrimination on the basis of disability in the Constitution, the rights of people with epilepsy and

other disabilities are frequently violated in domestic, community and employment contexts.

The sad fact is that people with epilepsy mostly experience the effects of stigma and discrimination from people that know about their epilepsy and seizures – therefore people close to them. If you didn’t know about a person’s epilepsy you would treat him/her exactly the same as everybody else? This raises the question: Who has epilepsy? Do you really know? The main aim of National Epilepsy Week is to raise awareness about epilepsy to dispel the myths, social stigmas and discrimination attached to the condition. People are considered to have less value to their community and are seen as only dependent on welfare. Together with a sense of vulnerability when it comes to seizures, this view places persons with epilepsy at severe risk.

Marina Clarke, National Director of Epilepsy South Africa, said, “National Epilepsy Week focuses on educating the public about the rights of people with epilepsy. We decided on this theme to encourage people to question their own attitudes towards people living with epilepsy.”For more information about Epilepsy South Africa and National Epilepsy Week, contact the organisation on 0860 EPILEPSY (0860 374 537) or visit www.epilepsy.org.za.

Police arrested an ex-police officer after he was found in possession of police blue lights, police sirens, and handcuffs in Mayfair, Johannesburg today. The 53-year-old former Colonel, who resigned from the police in 2008, was also found in possession of cash. Police officers were busy with sector patrols when they were stopped by members of the community concerned about a suspicious Ford Fiesta with three occupants which had been parked on the side of the road for several hours. Community members called for police backup, but one of the occupants of the car left before police reinforcements came.

As soon as SAPS members arrived, however, they approached the two remaining occupants of the car, searched it and recovered eight stolen cell-phones. The two suspects were then taken to the police station. The third suspect – who was the owner of the Ford Fiesta - was later arrested, after police found cash, police blue lights, police siren, handcuffs and a police identity card hidden inside his car. The car was then confiscated. The suspects will be charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, impersonating a police officer and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. They will appear in court soon. Investigations into the matter are continuing.

Wolf Hartung writes:

A few days ago I received a message on my cell phone from Eskom "that due to the unavailability of some of our generating units" the public was again asked to save power. This kind of continued plea to save power is getting on my nerves. To get your lights switched off in the middle of the night in a "break- in ridden" South Africa is frightening.

As far as I am concerned, enough money has been made available to Eskom over the year. Also, surely enough income is generated from South Africans who pay their light accounts. Looking at the income and payments, all one can ask is, what is happening to the money? Is there too much political interference and

is the dilemma Eskom is facing a lack of control and maintenance? It is expected from the South African public to pay their electricity bills or they get their electricity cut off. We, the people, also expect from Eskom to get their house in order and to introduce the necessary controls to assure a constant supply of electricity; just as it expects the public to pay for their electricity. The issue of cable theft raises the question of what is wrong with our law enforcement? Also, surely the metal-dealers who buy the cables need to be seriously investigated. To date there was no indication in the press that metal-dealers who are buying copper wire/cables have been brought to justice. Looking at cable theft one asks the question if our law enforcers and politicians are not profiting from this theft?

This applies even when both parents are travelling with their children and it also applies to foreigners and South Africans alike. When children are travelling with guardians, these adults are required to produce affidavits from their parents proving permission for the children to travel with them. The following are the new South African immigration regulations concerning travelling with children: Regulation 6: (12) (a) Where parents are travelling with a child, such parents must produce an unabridged birth certificate of the child reflecting the particulars of the parents of the child.(b) In the case of one parent travelling with a child, he or she must produce an unabridged birth certificate and-(i) consent in the form of an affidavit from the other parent registered as a parent on the birth certificate of the child authorising him or her to enter into or depart from the Republic with the child he or she is travelling with;(ii) a court order granting full parental responsibilities and rights or legal guardianship in respect of the child, if he or she is the parent or legal guardian of the child; or(iii) where applicable, a death certificate of the other parent registered as a parent of the child on the birth certificate;Provided that the Director-General may,

Citizen Journalist in Boksburg, Joy Kearsley, writes:After a few months in South Africa the husband and I were granted permanent residence after all. The government probably thought: “OK, they’re already here and only bought a one-way ticket, so we might as well let them stay.” The husband was set up with work so I too set about looking for a job. Having trained as a teacher in England, I decided to make use of my supposed talents. I found out that pupils were segregated into English-speaking and Afrikaans-speaking schools in the suburbs and schools for black, coloured and Indian pupils in the various townships where they lived. I duly applied at the local English-speaking primary school and was appointed as a Grade One teacher (in the 70’s schools had teachers, not educators) for the coming school year

which started in January and not in September as it does in England. I thought that starting the

school year in January was very thoughtless of whoever decided it: - he (it must have been a “he") obviously did not remember that Christmas comes in December and no-one has money for school uniforms and stationery at the beginning of January. It’s even worse nowadays because schools have to charge for educating the young. Back then, education was free except for a very small fee that was not compulsory anyway. I had been given the go-ahead to teach in this country by a civil servant in Pretoria who seemed satisfied with my credentials, and I had taught a Reception class in England which I imagined to be much the same as Grade One. After all, the children were of a similar age and yearning to read and write. What could be so different? Read full story on www.tametimes.co.za

tame TIMES Page 6 17 June 2014

By Colleen Qvist

Getting divorced? It is a reality that not all relationships survive and that divorce is an option chosen by many couples. If the parties have pursued every possibility to save their relationship and both agree that this is not a possibility, divorce mediation is an alternative to litigation.

Divorce mediation is a process of dissolving a marriage or union in a non-adversarial way. It is a voluntary process in which a neutral third party (the mediator) helps disputing spouses to arrive at a mutually beneficial solution to the conflict. In mediation, solutions are sought which take into account the needs of all family members. The mediator will always ask “What is in the interests of the child/children?”More information on Mediation• It is voluntary• The mediator sees both parties at the same time• It is confidential – unless there is a legal duty on the mediator to disclose e.g. where there is said to be or appears to be child abuse• It is mutual – both parties must agree or it does not work• It is non-adversarial – the parties are joined in the decision-making process• It is goal directed – the focus is on the future

lives of the parties and their children• It is self-empowering – each party gets to decide on the decisions regarding his/her life.• Agreements are more likely to be upheld by the parties as they have themselves made the decisions.• The resulting Memorandum of Understanding, which would include a Parenting Plan, if required, is taken to an attorney and forms the basis for the final legal document. Specific subject matter dealt with includes• Care and primary residence of minor children• Contact with minor children• Maintenance/financial support• Division of assets Mediation works on the premise that there is a “line in the sand” and it is about moving forward. Mediation does not look at how the couple reached this point of wanting a divorce. In divorce no one “wins” and mediation allows people to move on with their lives as damage-free as possible. Sessions are 90 minutes. The number of sessions is dependent on the parties involved.Colleen Qvist, Empowerment Coach and Speaker, is a qualified divorce and family mediator. Colleen offers private mediation sessions in Benoni. Colleen is available to answer your questions on [email protected].

Volgens dr. Du Toit is gekwalifiseerde forensiese-kriminoloë in Suid-Afrika baie skaars. Volgens dr. Du Toit is daar verskeie terreine in forensiese-kriminologie,

SA eleventh All-Africa Challenge tame TIMES Page 1117 June 2014

Ever since the launch of the All-Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) in 1992, South Africa has maintained its dominance in the golf tournament. On Thursday 12 June, a South African women’s amateur team again claimed success in Africa’s most prestigious biennial championship.Magda Kruger, Michaela Fletcher and Cara

Gorlei showed the same tenacity, commitment and determination as their predecessors to ensure the country’s successful title defence at the Muthaiga Golf Club in Nairobi.Rounds of 146, 148 and 148 by the South African trio secured an 11-stroke victory on a winning score of 442.Kenya, which was under huge pressure from

Tanzania, managed a second-place finish with a score of 453 while third- placed Tanzania finished on 456.Michaela Fletcher also claimed the Individual Competition on seven-over-par 220 after carding rounds of 79, 73 and 68, which was also the lowest round of the tournament.“We are very proud of this team, who did an exceptionally good job against some very tough opponents,” said Womens Golf South Africa president, Karen Olivant.“Michaela and Cara both contributed two great rounds to boost our chances and Magda was the only player in the tough par-three field. I am very proud of their performance and they were fantastic ambassadors for South Africa and for Womens Golf South Africa.”

A higher number of holidays in April provided higher vehicle sales in May, with a total of 7.4%. The harsh reality is, however, that the new market has declined by 9.2% year-on-year.In contrast, Ford sales continued to stay clear of the haze with a 19.2% increase within the first five months of 2013. "The market is showing severe signs of pressure," said FMCSA's Vice President Marketing, Sales and Service, Mark Kaufman. "Industry sales were significantly depressed so little solace should be taken from May's apparent increase over April. Current consumer confidence is only marginally higher than the low levels experienced during the 2008 - 2009 global recession."Yet Ford sales remain buoyant driven by sustained demand across its model line-up. EcoSport sold its highest volume and remained as segment leader for the third time this year. "Demand remains very strong for the compact SUV, so much so that our supply simply cannot keep up," said Kaufman. Equally its bigger brother, the Ford Kuga, sold its largest volume since August 2013 as

the popular and value-packed SUV continues to entice buyers with its combination of smart technology, features and performance.Ford's locally manufactured Ranger spent its second month this year selling more than 2 000 units. Its domestic success (2 018 sales) was mirrored by Ford's export numbers, with 4 089 Rangers delivered outside of South African borders. "Our Silverton Assembly Plant is running efficiently and maximising production across two shifts," said Kaufman. "There is boosted confidence in the product, also aided by resurgence in the European market." According to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa), passenger car sales accounted for 32 984 units, 11.3% down year-on-year. Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) performed marginally better, 5.1% down year-on-year to 13 866. "There is no doubt the motor industry is facing challenges," said Kaufman. "Consumers are getting squeezed and product companies need to find ways to provide more value to these consumers. Ford's EcoBoost engine is one of the ways that Ford has been doing well during the downturn by providing fun-to-drive vehicles that are also fuel efficient."
