The connection between 23 April and books was first made in 1923 by booksellers in Catalonia, Spain as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes who died on that day. This became a part of the celebration of Saint George’s Day. In 1995 UNESCO decided that World Book and Copyright Day would be celebrated on this date because of the Catalonian festival and because the date is also the anniversary of the birth and death of William Shakespeare. This year the theme of World Book Day celebrations in South Africa is “Come read with me.” The World Book Day (WBD) national celebrations in South Africa are coordinated by the Centre for the Book, an Outreach Unit of the National Library of SouthAfrica, mandated to promote a culture of reading, writing and publishing in all local languages and easy access to books for all. The WBD celebrations started off with a Door to Door Reading Campaign on 22 April at Greenspark settlement in Fochville and were led by the Deputy Minister of the Department of Arts and Culture, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi. The Door to Door Reading Campaign is an outreach programme to raise awareness about reading and to promote easy access to books. Books were donated to schools, pre-schools, an old age centre, the correctional centre, homes and bystanders to encourage a love for reading by members of a procession led by a brass band. The main event took place at Boksburg Civic Centre on 23 April, with the chief aim of educating the nation on the importance of reading. The event was graced by representatives from various sectors and structures, including schools, authors, librarians, politicians and civic organisations. They are irate because their ward councillor, Clr Johan Hendricks, never consulted them through any public participation process about the developments that will eventually see their current accommodation demolished, and them displaced and possibly homeless. But according to Clr Johan Hendricks, he was informed by his political party seniors (DA) not to call a public meeting on the matter of the housing development projects, as it is a Department of Human Settlement’s project and they should give answers on the matter and consult with the community. He said that he “feels sorry for these people,” but that he couldn’t consult with them on an issue that he had no control over, because he could not make any commitments on behalf of the Department of Human Settlements and the Boksburg Town Council.

Some other demands on the memorandum included:• A housing plan to accommodate the poor communities, black and white.• A plan to save businesses that are leaving the CBD in their numbers.• A strategy to fi ght crime and selling of drugs in our city.• Continuous updates on IDP projects to be started in the ward and that all these projects must have community participation as the majority is unemployed.• Action to demolish unused vacant buildings as they have become havens for criminals.Clr Hendricks was given seven days to respond to their demands. He said that he will consult with the relevant departments on the matter and hopes to be in a position to deliver proper feedback by then, because seven days is a short time to resolve this matter.

I once had a debate with someone about a campaign that gained such momentum that, from big business to ordinary citizens, millions were ploughed into it. All I will say is that this campaign was not to change the lives of the millions of hungry, poor and unemployed people in this country. When my opponent found herself with her back against the wall, she attacked me with the Bible, saying, “Even Jesus said that the poor will always be with you.”I desisted from continuing with the debate because I realised it would lead to confl ict. But her words stuck in my head and I was actually quite disgusted by the misinterpretation of the Bible scripture she quoted. Now I am no student of religious studies and will never claim to be an expert in any holy scripture, but, going back and reading the piece she quoted, I realised that people will often use any means to justify their lack of involvement

in programmes to help the poor.My interpretation of the words of Jesus was that He addressed the pretentious attack of Judas on the woman who used the expensive oil on Jesus, because Judas’s concern was not truly with the poor - he only used the plight of the poor to try to convince the woman to fi ll the purse he (Judas) was keeping. Jesus therefore attacked the greed of individuals that will be a stumbling block for others to escape poverty. When I noticed the young beggars in the picture sharing a plate of food that the one was given, I was saddened, but also had hope that we as a society can learn from this colour-blind sharing and reach a point where we stop seeing colour and creed and rid ourselves of our selfi sh greed, and realise that hunger is colour-blind and non-sexist, and hopefully share and care more.

Led by the local ANC, a group of hostel-dwellers from the Blue Sky Hostel in Cinderella and homeless Boksburg residents, on Thursday 23 April marched to the Boksburg Town Council offi ces to protest the exclusion of the poor from housing development projects of the Council and the lack of communication

and consultation by their ward councillor.Among the demands from the protesters is the matter of bond houses being built around Cinderella up to Windmill Park and Dawn Park. They fear that they will eventually be evicted from the Blue Sky Hostel to make way for the development of high-cost bond houses to be constructed.

Completion of an assembly, the fi xing of a recycling station and many other repairs of the school building are some of the improvements that will be made at eight Dawn Park schools that won the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is in the process of replacing the plastic black bag refuse removal system throughout the region with the 240-litre wheelie bin system. From 1 May 2015, the old black bag system will be phased out in areas north of the N17 in Boksburg. The wheelie bins, according to the Metro, “are supplied free of charge to residents, but will be levied individually as per the promulgated Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s Waste Management Services tariff schedule.”

According to the Metro:• Only 240-litre bins supplied by the Metro will

be emptied. 240-litre bins not displaying the “Ekurhuleni,” “EMM” and/or the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality logo WILL NOTbe emptied.

• NO additional refuse bags, branches or ANYother form of refuse placed on top, or next to, the bin will be removed.

• Should you generate in excess of 240 litres of refuse per week on your premises, you should apply to the Boksburg Waste Management Depot for additional bins at Reservoir Road, Boksburg East Industrial (on the same premises as the Licencing Department) (Tel 011 999-6277/5446/5310)

According to the Metro:Residents in Boksburg north of the N17 who still do not have their wheelie bins may collect them from the Boksburg Waste

Management Depot between 07h00 and 15h30.

Complexes and high density developments can make arrangements with the Boksburg Waste Management

Depot regarding the number of 240-litre bins needed for the complex, and Depot Management will arrange to deliver the bins at a central point in the complex or high density development.Residents collecting bins either at the Depot or a collection point in their complex must bring:• a copy of the ID of the Ekurhuleni

Metropolitan Municipality’s account holder

“The 2015 u/15 Elspark High School Rugby team is the fi rst team in the history of the school to win the Super 15 Schools rugby tournament.”This is how the excited coaches, Raymond Evans and Andre Derkson, told the tame TIMES about their victory. This is the fi rst season that Raymond and Andre have coached at the school, and they are doing

this on a voluntary basis. The school has been competing in the Super 15 Rugby tournament for the past fi ve years, and in 2014 ended in 15th position, which means that they were the overall losers of the tournament. Winning the tournament a year later is proof of the hard work, dedication and commitment of the two coaches and the hunger the team

had for winning. The Team’s route to victory:7 March - won against Riebeeckrand11 March - won against Hoërskool Sasolburg14 March - won against Hartebeespoort High18 March - won against President High 21 March - won against Goudrif Hoër18 April - won the fi nal against Benoni High

The team also proved their worth by not losing a single game in their last nine matches.Coach Andre says that their goal now is to win the league and, judging from their recent performances, they stand a good chance. The fi rst league match will be played on Wednesday 29 April against Delmas High.Well done Elspark!
