Eleven people have since been arrested for acts of public violence.Mondeor SAPS spokeswoman Cst Elizabeth Mnguni, explained that the Department of Human Settlements had moved some residents to RDP houses in Lehae last December, leaving some stands vacant. It was agreed that the residents could stay on the land on condition that no new shacks or people moved on to the vacant stands. Recently we (staff at tame TIMES) were asked what our vision for the paper is for the next six months. My vision is to bring the community together by sharing positive news. However this seems to be harder than expected, not because we are short of positive stories - there are many in our community - but it appears the bad and negative stories are more popular than the feel-good stories.I made the decision to place the story of young Sihle, who has a life-threatening disease, realising his dream of riding a horse (pg 7) on the front page. However, after the Eikenhof protests received numerous likes and shares on the tame TIMES Facebook page and Sihle only received a few, I had to accept that the readers would rather read about the protest. Will I ever be able to bring the community together by sharing positive news or will I always have to put the gruesome horror story on the front page? Secondly, please explain to me why these stories overpower the stories that share love and hope and bring happiness?The strange thing is both stories happened in the same area and on the same day. Half an hour after I left the stables the violence began, with my vehicle being saved from rocks by a mere 30 minutes and God’s grace.I did not go through on the first day of the protests, but was there on the second day. This was the first time I had experienced something like this and what did I learn from it? Be careful and thank God for His protection. Why? Because I got stoned. Yes, the protesters picked up rocks and aimed them at the four journalists taking photographs of the burning tyres, and my buttocks received a rude awakening as I was running away. The funny thing was that I had to think if I should take photographs or rather run away, and as it became clear that the rock in his hand had my name on it, I decided to run. Now, I did not really get hurt - I only have a bruise - but what would have happened if that rock had hit my head?

What I know is it did not and I am here to tell the tale - and I thank God for that.

Several Hantamberg residents in Glenvista have become very concerned about the rumoured development of a town house complex in their area. One of the residents saw workers, who he believes are from Tshepang Electrical, cleaning the area. When he asked why they were doing this, the worker responded by saying that a town house complex was to be built there. The resident told tame TIMES, “I also tried to talk to one of the surveyors who was taking measurements on the site, but he was really rude to me.” When tame TIMES contacted Clr Paul Smit for comment, he said he had not been informed of any proposed development, but was trying to find out more information. Tshepang Electrical was also contacted for comment, but tame TIMES had not received any feedback from them at the time of going to press.According to the concerned Hantamberg resident who contacted tame TIMES, “The area is full of flora and fauna, small animals such as porcupines, dassies, mongooses and guinea fowls. There are 36 bird species and ant mounds in the area and the small Klipriver flows past the area as well.” He added that a new town house complex would put further strain on Hantamberg Street, which is already unable to handle its current traffic load, citing the many potholes in the street as proof of this.

Mysterious development

Residents of a house in Mogg Avenue, Glenvista were woken up at 3:40 the Sunday before last when a BMW crashed into their wall.The vehicle, which had no occupants apart from the driver, crashed into the chevron at the T-junction on Comaro Street and Donnington Drive and continued for a few hundred metres through the veld before crashing into the wall.The driver was not injured, but the vehicle is a write-off.

Booysens SAPS have opened a case of murder after a 46-year-old woman, Ms F K Makatu, was shot in what is alleged to be an attempted hijacking on 4 August around 18:00 in Crownwood Road, Ormonde. Booysens SAPS spokeswoman W/O Lorraine Van Emmerick, however, told tame TIMES that they cannot confirm that it was an attempted hijacking.W/O Van Emmerick said, “Booysens SAPS received a call about the shooting that had taken place. Upon arrival they noticed a White VW Tiguan in the street. The members were approached by a paramedic on the scene who said that the victim had passed away. A docket of murder has been opened as circumstances surrounding the shooting are still to be investigated. Anyone with any information that can assist with the investigation of the incident, please contact Booysens SAPS.”It has been reported that a white Quantum without rear registration plates was involved.

Two weeks’ notice was given for the shacks to be removed, but this instruction was not adhered to, which led to the shacks being demolished.Motorists bore the brunt of the protester’s anger, with numerous vehicles being damaged with bricks and massive rocks. A 26-year-old motorist told tame TIMES, “I was coming from Eye of Africa and when I got to the intersection to get on to the service road, bricks were thrown at my vehicle. I ducked while trying to drive to get away. It was evident they were aiming for me.” Her vehicle has extensive damaged: her windscreen, the driver’s window and the back window of her car were smashed and there are numerous dents on the vehicle. She has since gone for trauma counselling, and will be going for more.Mondeor SAPS, SAPS Public Order Policing (POP) Unit and JMPD came to disperse and control the irate mob.

Rubber bullets were needed to control the crowd on both days, and teargas was used on the second day, when eleven people, both men and women, were arrested.Thabile Nkosi, the ward councillor for the area, came to the scene on Wednesday to try to calm the situation down by facilitating negotiations. She was not successful, however, as residents began protesting again as early as 5:00 on Thursday morning.A source informed tame TIMES that protesters pulled residents out of their shacks at 4:00 in the morning, telling them to join in the protest and threatened to burn their shacks down if they did not.While tame TIMES was on the scene on Thursday, protesters threw rocks at the journalists, hitting two; but fortunately no injuries were sustained.

On 9 August Thaba Eco Hotel, in partner-ship with Pam Golding Properties and tame TIMES, celebrated National Wom-en’s Day with women from all over Jo-hannesburg.Proceeds were raised in aid of the EPIC Foundation, which helps rape and abuse victims. Ladies attending the event were re-quested to wear hats and to bring handbags filled with items suitable for rape and abuse victims. The handbags were then donated to the charity on the day, and Alta McMaster from the EPIC Foundation expressed their gratitude to all the ladies for their support.Nico Panagio, from Survivor and 7de Laan fame was the MC for the day, and had all the ladies flocking to his side to have their pic-ture snapped with him. His good looks, wit and charm certainly added to the enjoyment of the day.The Glam Guru Hannon Bothma entertained the ladies with step-by-step make-over shows and gave them advice on how to look their absolute best in just a few minutes. He chose two ladies from the audience and did his Glam magic on them to show just how easily his tips worked.Kate Emmerson gave a vibrant, interac-tive and inspirational talk about how you should declutter your life physically, mentally and spiritually. By any measure the political situation in South Africa this year is unsettling. But it pales against the political turmoil in the country one hundred years ago in 1914. Following the assassination of the Crown Prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire Franz-Ferdinand in June of that year in Sarajevo, the First World War (at the time referred to as The Great War) broke out on 28 July 1914. Because of its connection with Belgium, Great Britain was drawn into the war within a week, on 3 August; and by early September of that year the world was introduced to the horrors of trench warfare. In South Africa, the Union government formed in 1910 under the premiership of Genl. Louis Botha and with Genl. Jan Smuts as Minister of Defence, sided with Great Britain, and Parliament in Cape Town resolved to invade German West Africa (today known as Namibia). The Anglo Boer War had ended a scant 12 years before on 31 May 1902, and some of the “Bittereinder” generals on the Boer side saw the Great War as an opportunity to reclaim their independence from Britain. Talk of an armed rebellion was in the air, although the protagonists referred to themselves as merely protesters. The immensely influential Genl. Koos de la Rey, fondly referred to as “Die Leeu van die Wes-Transvaal” and the hero of many battles in the Anglo-Boer War, had not openly declared his intentions. In the meantime the four-member Foster Gang of bank robbers – predating the notorious American Bonnie and Clyde pair by some thirty years - was active on the Reef, and various road blocks had been set up

in and around Johannesburg in an attempt to catch the gang. One such road block was positioned in Langlaagte where Deville Road (recently renamed Albertina Sisulu) meets Du Toit Street. On the evening of 15 September 1914, Genls. De la Rey and Christiaan Beyers were on their way from Pretoria by car, ostensibly to Potchefstroom. Beyers had, just that morning, resigned from his post as Commandant-General of the Citizen Force, and the two generals, on encountering the road blocks, apparently formed the impression that Jan Smuts was attempting to detain and question Genl. Beyers. They ordered their driver to ignore the roadblocks and, at the Langlaagte roadblock, one of the constables on duty fired a shot, reportedly aiming at the right hand back wheel of the car. The bullet ricocheted into the back of the car, and a fragment of it lodged in Genl. De La Rey’s heart, killing him instantly.The armed rebellion eventually petered out, but to this day there is speculation about the influence Genl. De la Rey would have had, had he joined the movement. Conspiracy theories also persist to this day as to who was responsible for his death. The unanimous opinion, then and now, is that there is no doubt that this tragic incident had a profound influence on the events of the day. As such, it is fitting that the centenary of the event be commemorated, and arrangements have been made to have a wreath-laying ceremony on Sunday 14 September 2014 at 14:00 at the site in question.

young sihle Botman’s dream came true last wednesday when he was able to ride a horse at James Maree’s t h o r o u g h b r e d racing Development Centre. the added bonus was that he had six-time south african champion jockey, Piere strydom, riding with him.The 12-year-old boy has a life-threatening disease and Reach for a Dream Foundation, in partnership with Phumelala Gaming, made a life-changing impact on the Daveyton resident last week. Sihle’s mother, Nomathemba, said she was very happy her son’s dream had come true and hoped this would give him motivation to fight the disease, as his spirits have been quite low.The smiling boy was not scared of the experience at all and learned very quickly how to handle himself on the horse. His radiant smile will forever be remembered.Besides having Strydom riding with him, Sihle was given a framed autographed memento of a previous Strydom winner, including riding gloves and crop to keep

the memories of the day fresh - courtesy of James Maree, who is also a former SA Champion jockey. On 11 August last year, a business-owner was opening his premises in Ophirton when he was approached by three unknown men. One of the suspects pointed a firearm at him and pushed him inside the business premises. One of the others then fired a shot in the air and demanded money. After robbing the business owner, they tied him up and ran away; but the quick-witted business-man was also strong and fit. He managed to untie himself and chased after the suspects, catching one of them.The docket for the business robbery was handed to D/Sgt Nefuranyele from Booysens SAPS to investigate and, with hard work and dedication, he was able to arrest another suspect who was involved. His diligent detective work also resulted in sentences of 18 years being handed down to both suspects on 30 July this year.

Simple tips can prevent a minor traffic event from escalating into an incident of road rage. This is according to the Automobile Association, which says drivers should not overreact to minor traffic events. Common triggers for on-road incidents are: motorists not waiting their turn at stop streets, cutting other motorists off or tailgating them when driving. “What is the maximum loss of time caused by someone not waiting their turn at a stop street? It is rarely more than five, maybe ten seconds,” the AA points out. “Reports of road rage incidents seem to show that people spend more time arguing over the initial error than they would have lost by simply taking it in their stride.” The AA reminded the public that all drivers occasionally make mistakes and advised motorists to defuse situations by apologising immediately if they make errors which inconvenience another motorist. “When we drive, we should take our cue from normal behaviour outside of the vehicle,” the AA said. “Society runs smoothly when we are able to tolerate minor failings politely. We can make driving safer for everyone by carrying this attitude into our vehicles.”

Two suspects, one 25 and the other 29 years of age, were arrested in Columbine Avenue, Mondeor when JMPD officers chased them down after they stole petrol at a garage in Devland. Cst Elizabeth Mnguni of Mondeor SAPS

said cases were opened for fraud, reckless and negligent driving, and possession of car-breaking implements and a car computer box. One of the suspects was already wanted for a case which occurred in 2013.

A 43-year-old suspect was apprehended by D&D Tactical on 5 August on True North Road, Mulbarton when he was spotted smoking a bottle neck in his vehicle, a white Polo Vivo. The vehicle and suspect were searched, and CAT, dagga and a fake gun were found.Mondeor SAPS spokeswoman Cst Elizabeth Mnguni confirmed the arrest of the suspect for possession of drugs. Kayde Francey from D&D Tactical said there had been various lookouts for a white Polo that had been driving around in the area and urged the community to learn the difference between a real gun and a fake one.

The Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Councillor Mpho Parks Tau announced on 7 August that 22 arrests have been made relating to 109 cases of corruption, collusion and fraud and tampering with the City’s systems that resulted in a loss of R200 million for the City’s revenue collections.Two of the people arrested were City Power employees, two were employees of the City of Johannesburg, and the rest were external contractors and general members of the public.Investigations have so far revealed that at least 30 Large Power Users (LPUs) in the City are possibly involved in corruption and defrauding the City. The City’s investigations, which started in 2013, have seen the City recover at least R107 million of an estimated R200 million loss reported a month ago. “We originally had 48 cases, and in the past two weeks we discovered an additional 61 cases. In the next two weeks we expect to make 10 more arrests,” said Mayor Tau.The Mayor reassured the public that the balance of the losses have already been accounted for in the City’s balance sheet, and will not impact the accounts of residents or businesses. According to Mayor Tau, stringent security measures are being taken to address criminal activities in the City’s power sub-stations. To address vandalism and criminal activities, the City is in the process of installing integrated biometric security systems to manage and monitor access into power substations. Pylons with vibration monitoring systems to detect vandalism are also being installed at substations which are currently being monitored 24/7. “Our mandate is to ensure effective and efficient service delivery in the City, and we will not tolerate crime, or any form of criminal

activities or disruptions and/ or tampering with the City’s systems,” said the Mayor.He added, “The City will continue to report and work very closely with the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Pravin Gordhan and Gauteng Premier David Makhura, who have been very hands-on in supporting the City in this initiative and other related programmes that the City is working on.”

should not consider them as loadshedding, as there has

been no loadshedding in the City and the necessary measures have been taken to prevent loadshedding. “The City has been a victim of deplorable

acts, which have resulted in unplanned outages that

have been experienced by some customers.”

According to the Mayor, an average of 32% of all outages

experienced each month are as a result of theft and vandalism, 16% are

caused by damage by third parties, and 12% are related to stolen cables and illegal connections.“It is clear that we are not dealing with loadshedding issues. We are dealing with power outages caused by criminal activities,” said Mayor Tau.“We encourage customers to report any power outages and/ or suspicious activities on any power systems as soon as possible in order for the City to respond more speedily.”“We have been able to make some of these arrests as a result of anonymous leads given by some community members, and we are grateful for the contributions that community members have made in these investigations,” said Mayor Tau.

Unplanned pregnancy is one of the challenges facing South Africa. According to WHO 50% of unintended pregnancies are among women who were not using birth control at the time they became pregnant.

Strategies for prevention of the above include the following:- Educating and empowering women about birth control- Helping men and women at risk of unintended pregnancies choose appropriate contraception - Correct use and consistency of the chosen method - Promoting the use of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC).

LARC are methods that require administration

less than once per month/cycle. They do not require ongoing effort on the part of the user for long, effective use and rapid return to fertility after discontinuation.

The following methods fall within the above category: Intrauterine devices, Mirena® and Copper devices Implanon®,Depo Provera,Nur-isterate and combined vaginal ringsHormone-based birth control often comes with side effects that can range from slightly annoying to bad enough to make you discontinue the method. The lack of hormones in some of the methods alone is a major benefit to many women who simply prefer hormone free birth control option.

Nausea, headaches and dizziness will resolve spontaneously in three months. If not, take pills with food or switch to another method.Breakthrough bleeding can be annoying because it is often unpredictable and prolonged. It is common with progestin only methods (Depo Provera, Nur-isterate, Implanon® and mini pills). They cause thinning of the lining of the uterus and it sometimes sloughs off. Ibuprofen or a little bit of oestrogen hormone can improve this condition..Reduced Libido: switch to an androgen based (testosterone-like) method.

Mood swingsStudies have shown that this is due to lack of pyridoxine in the body. Pyridoxine tablets may relieve these symptoms. Women with persistence of these side effects despite treatment must switch to a non-hormonal method.Weight gain and breast tenderness: because of fluid retention, usually improves after a few months. Drosperinone-containing methods can prevent this side effect.Vaginal thrush is more common with methods containing high doses of oestrogen.

The Prodigy reclaims Welterweight titleAfter five rounds in the Hexagon, Adam “The Prodigy” Speechly was announced the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) Welterweight Champion by unanimous decision, reclaiming the title and upsetting Henry “Herculeez” Fadipe.The main bout had spectators glued to their seats, with Speechly, the first ever Welterweight champion, pinning the 22-year-old Nigerian born athlete to the ground for most of the fight while displaying his grappling skills. Even though Fadipe was the bookies’ favourite, the crowd at Carnival City welcomed Speechly’s win with great excitement.The evening, with 13 fights on the card, was filled with intense competition with some of the best fights ever. Springs local Boyd Allen won the vacant Featherweight title against Boksburg resident Barend “BB Gun”

Both fighters received performance bonuses for their fight.Great camaraderie was seen between Liam Cleland and JP Kruger when both of them starting laughing together after a missed, yet potent, shot during the fight - as well as after the fight. By the end of the fight Cleland had a massive purple welt on his leg and Kruger won via split decision.
