Protests grow over new homes

MORE than 1,000 people have objected to plans for new homes at an 11 acre plot off

Nantwich Road. They have written to Cheshire West and Chester Concil following a strong

campaign by the Tarporley Greeneld Awareness Project. The council is expected to decidethe application in December.

Footballers allowed to use sports hall

GOOD news for two of Tarporley Vics football teams, who have been given permission to

carry on sing the sports hall at the old Brook Farm School temporarily. The veterans and

under 11s teams are currently using the hall for training but were facing nding another base

after Cheshire West and Chester Concil annonced it was ctting electricity to the site.

However, the concil has relented and allowed the teams to carry on sing the hall for the

time being.

Woodland memorial

A MEMORIAL has been pt p at the Tarvin Commnity Woodland in honor of Jim Grogan

who helped create the area. Jim, who was fonder of the commnity woodland trst, died

in Janary. Last month a gold plaqe set on sandstone was nveiled in memory of his

contribtion to the woodland.

Volunteers show

true gritLAST winter saw our rst attempt at

forming a network of gritting volnteers,

who made the pavements safer. If,

on reading this, yor reaction is there

werent any rond s then we wold

welcome yorself or a neighbor to take

on that patch.

Yo get a training session (45 mins),insrance cover, a spply of grit,

a bcket and spade and then its

over to yo. If interested, contact either the clerk Tel 01829 733496 or James Blackford at

Last winter our team of volunteers and the Parish Council contractors did an excellent job

gritting the pavements and some road jnctions to spplement the gritting of the roads done by

or local borogh Concil CWaC.

However the most glaring problems for the whole commnity seemed to be the High Street,

the Commnity Centre, and the slope p to the Royal British Legion car park, all of which we

wold like to address this year. So we are looking for volnteers amongst the shop keepers on

the High Street and others to tackle the Commnity Centre and the slope p to the Legion car

park. Any helpers please?

For the rest of s, remember, the wise by their bag of Rock Salt before the big freeze hits - a

big freeze is what is being predicted by the Met. Ofce for this winter.

Best Kept Village awardTarporley residents are delighted to again be group

winners in the Best Kept Village division of the Community

Pride competition Cheshire Community Action.

Congratulations are due to all of those in the community

who have made this possible for three of the last four

years. The village won the 2501 to 5000 population group,

ahead of Willaston-in-Wirral, Prestbury and Disley, who

all got through to the second round of the competition.

Congratulations are also due to Rushton with Eaton, who

won their group, and the overall competition winners,

Christleton. Awards were presented on 6th October in thegrand surroundings of the Civic Hall at Ellesmere Port.

Why am I more susceptible to

colds, flu and infections during

winter?

For many years scientists have

wondered why people are more

susceptible to colds and flu in the

winter and various theories have

been put forward, including factors

such as the weather simply being

colder, and our spending more time

indoors during the winter months.

Scientists have observed that ourvitamin D levels tend to drop to their

lowest levels during winter when the

bodys stores, built up from exposure

to the sun, have declined. Scientists

now suggest that this increases

peoples susceptibility to flu and

several studies have shown that

vitamin D has a positive effect on

immune

function.

Recent

research

from 2010

found that

supplementing

with 1200 IU

of vitamin Dfor 4 months,

provided a 74%

reduction in

the incidence

of flu in

subjects who

already had low

Decibellas at a recent concert. Evie, whose mm sings

with The Decibellas, has been treated by The Cleft unit

since her birth six years ago. The unit at Alder Hey is a

centre of excellence serving the local area, and the money

raised will be sed to offer information and spport to

parents and families of children born with a cleft lip and

palate.

The Decibellas wold like to thank everyone who

Fab 4 represent England at HandballFOuR stdents from Tarporley had the privilege of representing England at an nder 16s handball

tornament in Sweden. The fact that for ppils from one school shold be playing for England is

a fantastic achievement not only for them bt also for their coach Gary Kelsall who coaches at

the school every Monday after school.

The intrepid foursome of Ben Tyler, Zak Dunstone, Jack Oliphant and Jazz Clark ew out toGothenbrg in the smmer to take part in the Partille Cp (the largest yoth tornament in the

world) got nder way with over 1,000 teams and over 19,000 players from 46 nations. This year

the boys went throgh as rnners p in their grop. The girls played well in their grop and jst

missed out going to the next stage.

The pictre shows the for players receiving awards for their performances for the local handball

clb (Deva, Chester) from the former Great Britain captain Ciaran Williams. Ben and Zak have

jst fond ot that they have been selected for the England u18s and will be off to Germany at

half-term.

Students at Tarporley Sixth Form College

celebrated the recent opening of their extended

common room and cafe by hosting a coffee

morning for local members of the community.

Students served tea, coffee and biscuits to

members of local church and hospital groups.

Sixth Form students undertake community work

as part of their enrichment programme; they

have raised money for local institutions but also

wanted to show local people their new facilitiesas well as talk to them about their studies and

hopes for the future. The event was part of the

Sixth Form Citizenship programme.

EARLY in the summer of 2011 we

formed a new, local running group

called the Delamere Spartans.

Were a friendly bnch who love trail (or off

road) rnning in Delamere Forest and the

srronding areas, typically the Peckforton

hills, the Sandstone Trail and Frodsham/

Helsby hills. We meet p every Tesday

evening for a rn, sally followed by a

drink in one of the local pbs. Or weekly

rns are arond 8-10 miles (every week

is a different rote), bt we always make

provisions for people not wanting to rn this

far by also doing a shorter 4-5 mile loop.

Tesday evenings are becoming poplar,

sometimes with 20+ rnners joining s. Asa like-minded grop of rnners, there are

often plenty of ad-hoc rns to get involved

with too, from weekend meet-ps to mass

entries into local races.

We have a great mix of ages, gender and

abilities in the clb, right the way throgh

from some pretty serios endrance rnners

to people who are fairly new to the sport

and looking for some encoragement. We

all have one main aim thogh, which is to

improve our running tness whilst soaking

p some of the most beatifl srrondings

that Cheshire has to offer. The dwindling

evening light wont stop s either and were

now rnning on Tesday evenings with head

torches, which if yove never done it beforeis great fn and adds another dimension to

rnning!

Newcomers are very welcome to join s

on or rns with absoltely no obligations.

AS the nights draw in and the temperature seems to get cooler by the day I nd myself

veering towards the warming comfort of a glass of red wine. This evening will be my nal

wine tasting class with a group Ive been teaching for ve weeks and I thought I would take

this opportunity to reect on which red wines over the space of those 5 weeks have been

the most enjoyable. So this month Ill be recommending something from Argentina, Italy and

Portgal, three of the contries that we focsed on dring or tasting sessions.

Malbec is a grape variety that has become synonymos with Argentina, despite its French

origins and its not difcult to see why it is described as being the black wine of Cahors, the

region of France from where the grape originates. So dense is it in color that whichever

way yo lean yor glass, yo can only see the dark inky hes of what is a fll bodied, frit

packed red wine. The Malbec Nieto (8.25) is classic Malbec, deep in color, bndles ofblackcurrants and spice on the nose with a rich, full bodied palate that delivers all the avour

it promises on the nose.

The Ciconia Tinto(7.25) is a red wine from the innovative wine region of Alentejo in

sothern Portgal, a region also famos for its cork trees. Named after the White Stalks

that are said to live in this pictresqe part of the contry, the wine is a blend of local grape

varieties Aragones and Toriga Nacional and some Syrah, the more widely known Shiraz.

Spices and red berries on the nose with

hints of smoke, this wine has lovely jicy

frit on the palate balanced with soft, chewy

tannins and a complex, seductive nish.Finally the Nero dAvola, Cusumano

(11.00) from Sicily was by far the hit of

the Italian evening. Nero meaning black in

Italian and Avola is the town in soth eastern

Sicily, from where the grape is named after.

A luxuriously chunky red from this hot,

Mediterranean island thatll give any new

world blockbster red a rn for its money.

Tarporley Vics veterans side The Playboys played Tattenhall FC Veterans side recently and

retrned with a 3-3 draw. The goals were scored by Gary Joyce, Adam Walton and an own

goal. The Playboys extend a welcome to any over 35s to join the squad, and training is on

a Thursday night at Brook Farm. The team play around six to eight games per season on a

friendly basis and de to work and family commitments a large pool of players is reqired to

The Citizens Advice Brea is rnning an otreach programme at Tarporley Commnity

A mobile horse box in Road Street, Tarporley, was extinguished by reghters on 7th

October. The re completely destroyed the box but no one was injured. An investigation is

(PLuTO) was designed to

or pimping stations along their

rotes. One of these was bilt into a hill near Bnbry, Cheshire, which it can be seen by

travellers on the A49 on the right immediately after passing nder the Beeston railway

bridge.

But can anyone remember it being built? Does anyone have any photographs orstories about the depot/pumping station or about the men employed here? If you do,
