While we’re certainly still a small deal, going from copy-and-pasting random images and piecing together hasty articles to interviewing real people in the fashion and music industry is an incredible feeling.

Once again, the support shown for tarte* has been invaluable. Our interviewees, writers, and featured photographers were exceedingly accommodating throughout the process. Thanks to everybody - our lovely models, writers, and assistants.

It’s so exciting to see tarte* going some-where, and we hope that with your support we can continue to grow!

Bisous!

there is a reason why tea is the

second most popular drink in the world...

Tea breaks are a tradition that have been with us for approximately 200 years

80% of office workers now claim they find out more about what’s going on at work over a cup of tea than in any other way

By the middle of the 18th Century tea had re-placed ale and gin as the drink of the masses and

had become Britain’s most popular beverage.

Tea contains about half the amount of caffeine found in coffee

The number of recom-mended cups of tea to drink each day is 4, this gives you optimal ben-efit

Tea was cre-ated more than 5000 years ago in China

Tea is a natu-ral source of fluoride that can help pro-tect against tooth decay.

The first book about tea was

written by Lu Yu in 800 A.D

Tea firstly appeared in

Europe thanks to Portuguese Jesuit Father

Jasper de Cruz in 1560

Tea has po-tential health maintainence

benefits in cardiovascular

disease and cancer pre-

vention

96% of all cups of tea drunk daily in the UK are brewed from tea bags

Apart from tourism, tea is the biggest industrial activity in India

It’s going straight to my head:I think I’m falling in love again.Such simple miracles have happenedsince your steady hands have come andstopped my unraveling.

Your fingers, built for the piano, work out the knots that line my back. The stress I’ve stored since last December; But now, it doesn’t matter.I’ve learned to leave it in my past.

And I feel good about the future, this clarity I’ve never had.You are the bounce in my step, the burst of blood in my chest, the prayer I’ve kept in my head.

You are the knock of my knees, the swollen sound of each song

I scribble down and tear up,because they never match up.You are the words I fumble for.

In the morning, you are the daybreak, and I am glad.

And at night, you are the dreamI fall asleep to have.

THE STORY BEHIND THE LOGO

Ever wonder how ModCloth came up with the mushroom logo? The story begins when Susan and Eric were in col-lege, and began collecting vin-tage mushroom kitchenware. Every time they drove home from school, Susan and Eric would go ”mushroom picking” at thrift stores along the way. The first mushroom piece they spotted was a vintage 1970s canister set with classic brown and orange hues. Over the years they’ve acquired a kitchen full of mushrooms! Each piece is uniquely loved, from teapots to pans to a dis-tinctive Japanese cruet set. The mushrooms have spread to other rooms throughout the house, as Susan and Eric continue to collect weird and wonderful mushroom pieces. It wasn’t until 2006 that the couple decided to use mush-

rooms as ModCloth’s logo. Susan explained that, ”The mushrooms are vintage with a modern appeal, and because they’re so personal, the choice just seemed right for us!” But that’s not all. Eric takes a more scientific approach to the logo choice. ”The mushrooms also stand as a symbol for the cy-clical nature of life, and es-pecially fashion,” says Eric. Mushrooms are natural recy-clers, growing on fallen trees and gaining nourishment from their surroundings. They help promote new growth in the forest and are beneficial to the environment. ModCloth takesa similar approach — selling at least one authentic vintage piece a day, and promoting the use of environmentally friend-ly and fairly made products. They also are advocates of ’recycling’ old trends, and sell vintage-inspired pieces (as well as the aforementioned authentically vintage items).

Fashion blogger Annabu is more than just a pretty face. This talented girl mod-els, makes all her own fantastic looks, and is a Fine Arts graduate. Having been featured by multiple magazines, tarte* takes over to question one of our favourite bloggers. Read on to see why Annabu fits this is-sue’s theme of driven, inspiring young women!

What things inspire you to create an out-fit?

It can be anything, usually it’s art or different co-lours I see on the street. I don’t read many fash-ion blogs, but tumblrs with inspirational photos of people, clothing, architecture, and art are my fa-vourites. It definitely depends on my mood how an outfit turns out at the end. Sometimes I just want to relax, wear something really simple and comfort-able - most of the times that means I’m not in the best mood!

Page 24: tarte* issue 2
Page 25: tarte* issue 2

What got you so interested in fashion; has it always been an interest for you?

Fashion is a good way to express yourself. I like to experiment with different colours and garments. My interest for fashion definitely started at a young age, because when I got my first part-time job (about 14) I had the money to start enlarging my closet. After I finished school I studied fashion for a year, but it really wasn’t for me. I was unhappy with the people and the classes. I decided that studying fine arts would be better for me.I’ve been modelling for about four years now, working in the fashion industry definitely made me look at fashion in a different way. I don’t dress up when I have a job, I show up in the most comfort-able clothes - and usually still in my glasses. I’ll have to wear heels the whole day anyway!

Could you give us some tips on creating a great look on a smaller budget?

Sometimes I like to treat myself with a little design-er piece, but usually my outfits consist of vintage stuff, and H&M or American Apparel.I think leather/good quality shoes are a good in-vestment, but otherwise the seasons and trends change so fast that I would definitely recommend trying to find some good vintage stuff. Especially vintage blazers or high-waisted pants - they’re so easy to find in a vintage shop. I find that H&M sometimes has some really amaz-ing stuff, great cuts and materials. And if you want to have some designer pieces in your closet eBay is always a good option to get it cheaper.

In your closet, what is your one go-to piece?

For comfort (but still chic) I’d say my Nike zebra fur sneakers. I col-lect tons of Nike sneakers, but these guys are my favourite!

What gave you the idea to start blogging about your style? It all started when I joined Chictopia. I dis-

What advice would you give to someone creating their own unique look?

My best advice is wear what you love and

The Dominican Republic is a

the story the story Hours before her death, Katie was the flower girl at her aunt’s wedding, spreading petals down the aisle. As they left the wedding, they all got into a limousine and headed home. Martin Heidgen, 25, had had at least 14 drinks that night and his blood alcohol content (0.28) was more than three times the legal limit in New York (0.08). He drove more than two miles north in the southbound lane con-taining the Flynn family. Both the driver of the lim-ousine, Stanley Rabinowitz, and Katie were killed instantly. Katie was decapitated and her mother held her head as rescue workers helped the rest of the family out of the vehicle.

The lyrics in this song draw many parallels to this tragedy. The first verse is seemingly from the mother’s perspective, telling Katie to spread the petals and mentioning that she had one more night to be her mother. The second verse is arguably from Heidgen’s perspective, referring to Katie as “My beauty supreme,” and lamenting the guilt that crushes him. Four lines are sung towards the very end of the song and are nearly inaudible against the refrain. These lines seem to be from Katie’s perspective and mention how she will never have to deal with loss herself, and therefore “should be the one laughing.”

Rusko’s newest work covers a wide enough ground to satisfy all of his old fans, and bring in new ones. He experiments with trancey, rave-like feels in Kumon Kumon, and goes for a laid-back style in Rubadub Shakedown. Crowd pleasers like Woo Boost keep his old listeners in check. All in all, this is a great album to get anyone into dubstep territory.

MUSICAL MUSINGSArtist: RuskoAlbum: OMG!Label: Mad Decent

Artist: Right Away, Great Captain!Album: The Eventually HomeLabel: Favourite Gentle-men Recordings

Rating: 9/10Right Away, Great Captain wows us again with their newest album, The Eventually Home. The solo project of Andy Hull (lead singer of Manches-ter Orchestra) delivers the same emotion, raw-ness, and catchy folk-style as his last release The Bitter End. Never heard of him? Start off with Cut-ting Off the Blood to Ten - we promise you’ll be hooked.

Artist: STRUC/TURESAlbum: All Of The Above

Rating: 10/10You haven’t heard progessive hardcore until you’ve heard all of the above. The short EP (only five songs) will completely change your mind about what’s worth listening to these days. To get the full effect, listen to the entire album through - the jump from Departures to Transitions? Mind = Blown. And after seeing them live, I can say that these guys aren’t kidding around.

Artist: Asking Alexan-driaAlbum: Stepped Up and ScratchedLabel: Sumerian

Rating: ?So this isn’t really a review - it’s a public notice. Here at tarte*, we love all music. And when two of our favourite genres come together, it’s some-thing worth celebrating. Lucky for us, the brilliant Asking Alexandria has decided to collaborate with some of the greatest dubstep artists to re-release a mixed version of Stand Up and Scream. Keep your fingers and toes crossed, but we have no doubt that this will be a goodie. MUSICAL MUSINGS

roses are #FF000, violets are #000FF

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,And sorry I could not travel bothAnd be one traveler, long I stoodAnd looked down one as far as I couldTo where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair,And having perhaps the better claim,Because it was grassy and wanted wear;Though as for that the passing thereHad worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally layIn leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-

I took the one less traveled by,And that has made all the difference.
