    The above best describes the philosophy at work that has seen Mr. Khalid Awan executesome broad strokes and leverage his successful courier company TCS into a multi-business group, TRANZUM, focused on attaining global market share in diverse

    endeavours. The new businesses are natural upstream and downstream activities of thecore competency that TCS has acquired over the last 23 years of its existence. They aremanned by old colleagues with new mission statements and a shared vision that acceptsnothing less than perfection as par for the course.     The leader has led from the front when required.     A long and very eventful journey has seen TCS grow intoits present dynamic manifestation that defines its ambitionsand parameters in terms of the limitless global village.CONNECT caught up with the Chairman of TRANZUMlong distance via the Internet, and gained an insight for itsreadership on the thinking that has gone into this reinventionof the business.

    CONNECT: What were the strategic considerations that

    led to the name TRANZUM?

    Khalid N. Awan:As we evolve into a multi-services grouptrading globally, we needed a common identity and a name.

    C: How do you envision TRANZUM adding value to the

    existing business units?

    KNA: Firstly a common identity would demonstraterelationship between various entities comprising the Group,who now have a family name. Customers would thusbecome aware of Group's overall capabilities. Internally itenables the TRANZUM Group to centralize coremanagement functions such as Information Technology

    Support, Human Resource, and Marketing Services.

    C: Given its very high brand recognition developed

    over the last 23 years, TCS will remain the prime

    identification of TRANZUM in the foreseeable future.Why did you not leverage an existing strength and

    establish the TCS GROUP instead of opting for a brand

    new name that will require considerable investment

    before its brand value can be developed?

    KNA:Yes, TCS is a strong brand in this market, and wouldtherefore remain our flagship company in Pakistan. However,when trading globally in services other than courier andlogistics, we needed to have names and distinct identitiesfor our new services. This is necessary not only for marketingpurposes but also for each company to have its separatefocus and customer orientation, a case in point: the needsof a courier services customer are different from the needs

    of a travel services customer. Accordingly staff training andprocedures have to be different.

    We have thus organized ourselves as follows: TCS providingcourier and logistics services; FLYING WAREHOUSE -customized airfreight solutions; ROAD TRANSPORT -warehousing and distribution; SENTIMENTS EXPRESS -Gifts, Greetings and mail-order services; INTIANA - Traveland Tours; OCTARA - Training, Events and Publications;INFOTHON - web based e-commerce services.

    Born as separate business units within TCS, three of theabove have so far matured into independent companies,and these companies, either through our own entities or

    global alliances, are capable of serving customers anywherein the world.

    Some of our customers in Pakistan have alreadyexperienced the benefits of this global reach andresourcefulness. For example, the Management Associationof Pakistan (MAP) Convention organized by OCTARA is aworld-class event surpassing previous standards in termsof speakers and sponsorships. Drawing upon ourresourcefulness and experience gained in organizing similarevents abroad, OCTARA has attracted world-class speakersand sponsors like CNN and Boeing - for the first time inPakistan. Likewise customers in developed markets such

    as North America have also experienced our uniquecustomizations. TCS earned an award recently from theLieutenant Governor of Ontario for providing an innovativeand cost-efficient delivery solution to the aboriginalpopulat ions inhabi t ing the remote terr i tor ies.

    The reason for opting for a new name -TRANZUM, is thatwe needed a name to define our group of companies, andthis name had to be pronounceable internationally,compatible across cultures, not yet patented anywhere,and most importantly, in today's global economy have adot.com domain available. Similarly all other names likeIntiana, Flying Warehouse, Octara, and Infothon had toqualify these criteria. The naming exercise was therefore

    an extensive process in which the core management team was

    deeply involved. As for question why we did not adopt the name

    TCS Group, this is because TCS is now one of the companies

    in the group. It is our pride and a strong name, the eldest siblingin the TRANZUM family. In the course of time it is our hope that

    the new entities will become equally famous.

    C: A question on a few minds is whether TCS Courier is

    being primed for a merger with an existing international

    operator?

    KNA:TCS has come of age as a world-class company in its

    own right. For nearly quarter of a century it has delivered quality

    that has earned brand recognition and a market share that is

    the envy of any international operator looking at Pakistan. Hence

    we have had offers, and this is normal in business. However,

    at this time our entire focus is to develop TCS even further as

    exciting opportunities beckon us.

    C: What is you vision for Tranzum?

    KNA:To be a multiple services provider leveraging the power

    of e-commerce globally.

    Arie De Geus, Professor at London Business School & former

    executive for Royal Dutch Shell, has said that enduring

    organizations are "...financially conservative; their leaders are

    outward looking; they have a strong value system; they all have

    a very tolerant management style; and, critically, they do not

    define themselves by the nature of their assets, instead in terms

    of their human community." He could very well have been

    speaking about TCS and the new TRANZUM Group.

    Whenever the concept of a group of companiesis brought into a business, the business tends

    to grow in all directions and at times at

    exponential rates. This piece of corporate

    wisdom comes from the latest entrant to the

    TCS human capital bank, Mr. Khalid Dar, Senior

    Manager Call Center. Khalid Dar's seen a fair

    bit of the world so he probably knows what he

    is talking about, particularly in reference to

    TRANZUM. Now growing in all directions and

    at times at exponential rates appears to be all

    good, provided the action stations are manned

    by cadres that relish the act of pulling 'Gs', and

    just as quickly settling into consolidating thegains made. Flat-out gallops need to be

    interspersed with steady canters, or even the

    occasional trot, to help the mount recuperate

    and remain battle-worthy for the long haul.

    Burnout is a clear and present danger when

    taking on the world, and one must bear in mind

    that Rome was not built in a day, and that

    perseverance is the key to success. On that

    thought provoking note, here's wishing

    TRANZUM a glorious future.

    of CONNECT at a critical juncture in the

    development of one of our nascententerprises. Octara has developed very

    quickly indeed, and it has as much to do

    with the dynamism of the team that is

    heading Octara, as with a period in our

    corporate lives where human resource

    development has been flagged across the board as a key area

    in the acquisition of competitive advantage. As event managers

    of the 10th Management Convention 2006, Octara has staked

    its rising reputation to delivering a 'WOW!' experience to its

    highly valued client, the Management Association of Pakistan.

    I sincerely wish Hamza Hashmi and his team top-notch success

    in the conduct of this very prestigious three days event that

    has seen confirmations from a very distinguished panel ofspeakers indeed.

    It gives me a great sense of satisfaction to see the cherished

    ambition of our Chairman find practical expression in the shape

    of the TRANZUM Group that will fine tune and promote globally

    the seven businesses under its care. A great deal of time and

    energy has been expended upon the emergence of this

    progressive master enterprise offering services in diversified

    industries as we evolve into a multi-services group tradingglobally. All that now remains is for all our colleagues to redouble

    their effort and accept no limits on how far we can go both as

    individual enterprises, and collectively as TRANZUM.

    This issue we are truly privileged to carry within our pages the

    profiles of two ladies who have done Pakistan proud. Arfa

    Karim, at the tender age of 10, has notched up some amazing

    accomplishments, and been invited for a one-on-one with the

    right honorable Bill Gates. Samina Rizwan is heading up the

    regional operations of Oracle, and is a formidable force at work

    for Pakistan. TCS youth trainer Sidra Iqbal has shown the flag

    at the World Youth Congress, and has filed a most stimulating

    report.

    The Khaleej Times International Forum brought together thecream of the East and West to discuss "Muslim World andthe West: Coexistence of Civilizations." Heads of Government,Consuls and prominent businessmen attended the event thatcleared many misconceptions between the two civilizations.

    It was the third discussion hosted by the Khaleej Times, andattended as panelists by Lord Merlin Victor Hay who is theEarl of Errol and Lord High Constable of Scotland and amember of the British House of Lords. Also on the panel wasLord Nazir Ahmed of Rotherham, a Muslim Asian Memberof the British House of Lords and a leading voice in the 'Inter-faith Inter-religious Dialogue Group' in British Parliament.The third panelist was Lady Olga Maitland, president of theDefence Strategic Forum and a former Member of the BritishParliament, and Mohammad A. R. Galadari, Chairman of theGaladari Group.

    A balance of perspective is lacking in the way both the Westand the Muslim World deal with each other was Lady OlgaMaitland's view. "You have a West that is fabulously rich and

    strong, whereas the Muslim society by and large lives undermiserable conditions of poverty and dispossession," she said."The Muslims do not hate the West. What they hate is,however, certain policies of some Western countries." Theneed of the hour, according to Lord Merlin Victor Hay, is tounderstand that the ethical core of all cultures is one, beneaththe external differences that keep them apart. Lord NazirAhmed was blunt in his analysis of Western attitudes that hesaid smacked of double standards. The consensus thatemerged from the highly stimulating discourse was thatdialogue alone is the way forward for cultures and civilizationsto coexist. Javed Malik, consultant Khaleej Times InternationalForum, set the tone of the discussion in his opening remarksby stressing that the publication of the blasphemous cartoons

    Arfa, a promising software programmer from Faisalabad,Pakistan, is believed to be the youngest Microsoft Certified

    Professional in the world, a designation given to outside expertswho prove their ability to work with Microsoft technologies.

    While some teenagers have achieved this feat, it's far more

    common among adults seeking to advance their computercareers.

    She was nine years, nine months, 11 days, and six hours old

    when she took the exam. Fully aware of the fact that she's the

    youngest Microsoft Certified Professional, she wants to bespecific about her age at the time, in case another young

    programmer emerges someday to challenge what she callsher "world record."

    Arfa's one-on-one meeting with Gates was part of a visitarranged and sponsored by Microsoft to better introduce Arfa

    to the company, and to give people at headquarters a chanceto meet her. The week included lab tours and a series of

    informal sessions with Microsoft executives and employees,including a Pakistani employee group.

    She made an impression upon her American hosts through acombination of charm, flattery and boldness uncommon for

    someone her age writes Todd Bishop, reporter for the SeattlePost-Intelligencer who covered Arfas visit. For example, during

    Arfa's meeting with Gates, she presented him with a poem she

    wrote that celebrated his life story. But she also questionedhim about what she perceived to be the relatively small

    proportion of women on the campus. It should be balanced,said Arfa, an equal amount of men and an equal amount of

    women. About 75 percent of Microsoft employees are men,

    according to company data. Other topics theydiscussed included her Muslim faith and her

    hometown, an industrial city known for itstextile businesses. "We discovered her,

    we ran into her, we feel very lucky,"

    said Jawwad Rehman, Microsoft'scountry manager in Pakistan,

    who accompanied her to the companyheadquarters in Redmond. "But I'm

    sure there are many others out there,

    as well, who don't have access to thecomputers or the proper education

    system" as Arfa did.

    Previously unaware of the casualdress code at Microsoft, she said she

    had expected Gates to be wearing a

    suit but was surprised to find him ina casual shirt with the top button

    open. "I expected that all thepeople would be here in suits!"

    Ultimately, Arfa says,

    she would like to go toHarvard University or

    MIT, and then either goto work for Microsoft in

    its developer division, orbecome a satel l i teengineer. These career

    choices are not theproduct of a natural

    progression of herpresent sk i l l sets.

    Rather, they are inspired

    by her concern for globalconnectivity that is

    bringing different peopletogether in peace and

    friendship. For the

    moment Arfa is studying in class 7 at the Multan City

    School, with basketball, cycling and horse riding as co-curricular interests. Her father, Amjad Karim, is a LieutenantColonel in the Armoured Corps, who has just returned

    from a tour of duty with UN Peacekeepers in the Congo.

    Her mother Samina has a Masters in Economics that sheputs to good use running the family farm in Faisalabad.

    Arfa's accomplishment is "very impressive," said MichaelEarls, 33, a software consultant and Microsoft Certified

    Solution Developer in Atlanta. "The type of thinking thatgoes into correctly answering those questions is pretty

    mature. ... Microsoft certifications are not a joke -- they're

    highly respected in the industry."Maths and Physics are Arfas favourite subjects, and Enid

    Blytons Secret Seven and Famous Five her favourite

    books, although her present read is Louis Fitzbezs HarrietThe Spy. Arfa has two younger brothers, Daud (4) and

    Samad (8), and her current best friend is Hira.At the International Womens Conference in Multans

    Bahauddin Zakriya University recently Arfa read a paperto the great appreciation of the 2000 plus delegates. She

    also inaugurated a computer lab at Karachis Sindh

    Madressa, donated by financiers Khanani & Kalia, and gota commitment from them to donate one to a school in her

    hometown of Faisalabad as well. These now are the not-so-simple pleasures of a Pakistani pre-teen growing up.

    So how does she handle all this attention? Her philosophyhas the earthy simplicity of youth. Shyness is in the mind,

    she says. If you feel shy, you will be shy. If you feel

    confident then you will be confident. Clearly she is relishingher celebrity status. Great going girl!

    At the Congress Sidra was truly in the thick of things, conductinga mentoring workshop Spread Your Wings and Fly; discussing

    and drafting the Congress policy document with groups of diversenationalities and backgrounds; refurbishing an apartment for the

    homeless with her clan as the Action Project; and the numerous

    informal late-night-over-a-pizza talks.

    It is not the battles that we have lost along the way that haunt

    us the most, says Sidra. But those we never mustered thecourage to fight. It is not when idealism fails that we are most

    disappointed, but when it is surrendered without a struggle. Atconventions, such as the 3rd Youth Congress 2005, where you

    meet tens of zealous young delegates trying to contribute touphold their pledges and promises, one realizes that yes a better

    tomorrow is possible. Indeed! Sidra has joined ARY Television

    as Product Development Manager for the entire Network spreadover 12 channels, in addition to being inducted as Trainer for

    Conducted in Lahore by Suleman Ahmer, the founder of Timelenders. He is an

    Then came Rose-marie Fernandez, the Canadian Certified Human Resource

    Practitioner. She has by now made it a habit to do things in twos, and this time

    Crucial Asset'. Both drew considerable attention from corporate ladies holding

    the fort, and increasingly known as the boss's boss.

    'Managing for Tomorrow' was next, facilitated by Shaikh Ghazi who is based in

    Dubai, and acclaimed as a result-oriented individual with excellent coalition

    building skills, and imparting training with the goal of changing mindsets.

    The fifth Octara Workshop was with Hassan Rizwan on the subject of 'Public

    Speaking at Work'. Hassan is a graduate of Behavioral Sciences from the US Air

    Force Academy, and has won a number of national and international declamation

    competitions.

    Sandra Reeves (FCMC, Med) was back in Pakistan with 'Creativity and Innovation

    for Business', a Tony Buzan Thinking and Mindmapping Centre (UK) certified

    one-day Workshop. Sandra has been listed in the International Who's Who

    Directory since 1997, and is the author of an acclaimed guidebook 'Getting Ahead

    in your Career.'

    Octara engaged with Rahid Sami on an issue of high importance, 'Managing

    Upset Customers Constructively, and Learning from Service Breakdowns'. Rahid

    is an experienced motivational speaker specializing in sales and service quality.

    In between Workshops Octara helped put together the 3rd Excellence Awards

    and Charter Award Ceremony of the Chartered Financial Analysts Association

    Islamabad is David Collins, with

    a distinguished service record. He joined the Canadian

    Government in the Department of Industry, Trade and

    Commerce in 1976 after Naval Reserve service, and in

    addition to discharging his duties in his hometown of Halifax

    (Nova Scotia), he has served abroad in Minneapolis, Warsaw,

    Ankara, Brussels (NATO Delegation), and Seoul. He was

    The Canadian Government has consistently demonstratedstrong support for humanitarian assistance and disaster-relief operations throughout the world. Following theEarthquake the CF-DART Task Force Pakistan (TFP) setup camp at Garhi Dupatta, 20 kilometers southeast ofMuzafarabad with a Medical Clinic and a Reverse osmosisWater Purification Unit (ROWPU). The CF-DART TPF hasthree ROWPUs in Muzafarabad.

    The origins of CF-DART go back to 1994 when the CFdeployed 2 Field Ambulances to Rwanda. Despite the bestefforts of all concerned, the relief effort after the peak ofthe Cholera epidemic that brought great suffering. Thisexperience convinced the Canadian Government of theneed to create a rapid response capability to provideeffective humanitarian aid. The concept of the CF-DARTwas born. The DART is a military organization designedto deploy rapidly anywhere in the world to crisis rangingfrom natural disasters to complex humanitarianemergencies. It works in conjunction with national andregional governments and non-governmental agencies tostabilize the primary effects of emergencies; provide purifieddrinking water and medical aid to prevent the rapid onsetof the secondary effects of the disaster; and gains timefor the deployment of national and internationalhumanitarian aid to facilitate long term recovery in a disasterstricken community.

    CF-DART has operated in Haiti, Honduras, Turkey, SriLanka, and now Pakistan. It comprises 200 CF personnelready to deploy for up to 40 days in permissiveenvironments where it will not encounter any organizedresistance or threat. It can be activated by a request froman individual country or the UN, and requires permissionfrom the Canadian Government. CF-DART serves the fourcritical needs of primary medical care, production of safedrinking water, a limited specialist engineering capability,and a command and control structure that allows for

    effective communications with the host nation and theother agencies involved in the relief effort. CF-DARTcomprises of Headquarters (45 personnel) for strategiclevel liaison; Logistics Platoon (20 personnel) for transportand supplies; Engineer Troop (37 personnel) for bulk andbagged water, and limited construction; Medical Platoon(40 personnel) for tented facility catering to 250 out-patientsand 10 in-patients per day. A Defence and Security Platoon(45 personnel) provide camp security and general support.CF-DART is not designed to conduct search and rescueoperations.

    MUJEEB HASHMI joined TCS in 1982 as OperationsAssistant at a time when TCS and DHL were one entity. Hehas done his time on the frontlines delivering time sensitivedocuments and packages. 24 years later Mujeeb is in the HRdepartment as TCS Manager for Training Resource, makingtraining video guides for TCS couriers on personal groomingand client interface, and saving the Company the expense ofhiring external trainers. This career progression has emergedout of Mujeeb's personal passion for the performing arts thathas seen him deploy his considerable talent as actor, scriptwriter,director, producer, and concept originator.     Mujeeb says his career highpoint was in 2003 when he ledthe TCS 'Karavan-e-Azadi' from Karachi to the Khyber Pass,covering a distance of 3062 kilometers in 11 days on a Honda70 motorcycle, along with five other colleagues that included

    Amir Nazar. Mujeeb and Amir went the entire distance, whilethe three other members of their five-man entourage cameonboard from station to station. "It was the most memorabletime of our lives. Mr. Saqib Hamdani made it possible with aRupees 1.5 million budget. We were given VIP protocol rightalong the journey, and in every city we were joined by hundreds

    percent courier commission that the Company was deductingwas restored to the couriers, with Mujeeb receiving a windfallof Rs.90,000 from the couriers as an expression of theirgratitude to him.

    Mujeeb is married and has two kids, daughter Ilsa (13) andson Sahil (7). To keep fit he is a regular at jogging.

    AMIR NAZAR is equally thrilled about the bike ride to theKhyber, and mentions it as the defining moment of his life."We were really treated like visiting royalty where ever wewent, and I can't thank TCS enough for that experience," saysNazar, who joined TCS in 1992, and has recently been madea TCS Franchisee for the New Sabzi Mandi area, that alsoincludes the Baqai Medical and Cadet Colleges, as well as

    Gulshan-e-Maymar. "It is a matter of great pride and prestigefor me to be the first TCS employee to be elevated in thisfashion." While his investments are in the rentals and payroll,TCS provides him with the crucial back-end support. Earlierin his career with TCS Amir worked as sales solicitor andcourier. Both he and Mujeeb concur that there is a considerableburnout factor at work as a courier. "The city streets are quitestressful, and to negotiate them on a daily basis all day longdoes take its toll." They have both been in some seriousaccidents that resulted in broken bones, and in Mujeeb's casea blood clot that took four months to dissolve and afflicted himwith recurring blindness during that period.

    A shared passion between Amir Nazar and Mujeeb Hashmi isfishing, which is not surprising living on the coast as they do.Amir acknowledges Mujeeb as the senior expert angler, even

    though they fish in different groups. Amir's biggest catch thisseason has been an 8 kilo 'Dhotar' amongst a 1.5 maunds ofassorted fish catch. "There is no comparison to eating fish thathas been freshly caught," he says with a relish, preferring tohave it either fried, or cooked with an assortment of herbs andspices. Amir is married with daughter Yusra (7), and sonsHarris (5) and Afwan (1).

    Still very much in the prime of life, both Mujeeb and Amir havea long career ahead of them yet, and it is entirely possible thatwhen we next visit them a few years hence, Mujeeb may wellhave transited to maker of LollyBollyHollyWood movies, andAmir the owner of a fish and chips franchise operation, inaddition to being a TCS Franchisee. As they say in Swahili,'Kay Sera Sera'!
