STARTING OFF

Following the issuing of the project brief I start

to figure out the basic structure, deciding on

structural grids, span distances and

directions, floor slab shapes and levels.

Starting with a basic sketch, then moving onto

a more rigid line drawing with a little more

detail so further decisions can be made.

Using research and knowledge gained

from our previous projects on site

servicing and utilisation, and precast

concrete structural analysis, the process

of developing a building begins.

FAÇADE RESEARCH Using case studies from Detail Magazine I focused in a façade concept. The

building I used as my primary source is a student accommodation block in

Eindhoven, Netherlands. The building is entirely prefabricated using a load-

bearing concrete façade.

KEEP DRAWING Once a façade concept was decided on it was time to figure out how to

adapt it to this projects building form. It took a lot of doodling, sketching

and paper to come up with a workable pattern.

TIME FOR THE DETAILING

Once the basic plans and concepts are in place it’s time to

figuring out how the build is to be constructed.

Considering all the elements, joining them together in a

robust fashion while all the time mindful of guidelines,

standards and regulations. It’s quit a challenge!

Again lots of sketching, drawing and focusing on the

details.

TOP AND TAILConsidering the major details such as the basement and parapet, waterproofing and

insulating is key. Preventing ground water egress into the basement using a tanking

membrane and ground drainage while minimising cold bridging and dampness getting

into the building at the parapet level.

ENTRANCE AND CORE

Designing a layout for the stairs and lift core

was an interesting exercise. Balancing the size

and usability of this area, while considering the

regulations and requirements is quite a

balancing act. I was surprised at how much

area had to be give over.

Entrance thresholds are prone to problems.

Keeping the build’s thermal envelope

continuous at this point, minimising the

likelihood of water coming into the building and

making the threshold robust to handle heavy

footage are all challenges in this area.

SOMEWHERE TO RELAXThe project brief called for a Green Roof terrace for people to step

outside and relax in the fresh air. Dealing with the various building

levels and constraints, whilst providing the appropriate drainage,

thermal and moisture protection meant I couldn’t relax.
