To cope up with the increased work load, decentralize and facilitate comd and control, the whole of unified Punjab and HP were divided into eight Gp HQ commanded by Lt Cols. These Gp HQ were and are still located at Chandigarh, Ambala, Rohtak, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Shimla. The NCC Gp Cdrs were given the responsibility to exercise control and to co-ordinate activities of NCC Units under their comd.

On 01 Nov 1966, consequent to re-organisation of Punjab State into Punjab, Haryana, HP States, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh, the designation of this Dte was changed to NCC Dte Punjab, Haryana, HP and Chandigarh (PHHP&C Dte). The names of NCC Units located in different States were also changed, accordingly.

Despite bifurcation of the erstwhile State of Punjab into four States (including UT of Chandigarh), within the NCC, the Dte is still popularly known as the “Punjab Dte”. Presently the NCC Dte PHHP&C is being commanded by Maj Gen Beji Mathews.

The PM’s Champion Dte Banner and trophy was presented by the Hon’ble Prime Minster Shri Narendra Modi at the PM’s NCC Rally New Delhi on 28 Jan 2020 to Brig J S Samyal offg ADG. The Dte has been a Champion Dte for six times (1976, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 & 2020).
