EVENT REPORTS AND NEWS

Bulahdelah CS and Tea Gardens PS

Debating teams

by Miss Huish

Inter School Debating Last Tuesday, Tea Gardens Public School and Bulahdelah Central School participated in round one of the Lower North Coast Debating Competition. The topic was that we should solve the problems on Earth before exploring Mars. The speakers for Tea Gardens on the affirmative team were first speaker Kaitlyn Smith, second speaker Caitlin Condie, third speaker Sophie Frazer and team adviser Braiven Megallon. Both teams were resourceful, offering interesting and well developed arguments. They were determined and confident when presenting their speeches to the audience. It was a very close debate with our school winning by a quarter of a point. After the debate the boys and girls of the teams were able to discuss some of the things they had learned about debating and give each other some feedback. They showed good sportsmanship and complimented each other on a great debate.

Do the funky chicken! Our students and staff celebrated Library and Information Week with a visit from author Chris Collin. Students were enthralled while Chris read “The Funky Chicken, A Bushy Tale of Crocs and Chooks” with background music to emphasise the story. The children enjoyed dressing up, watching puppets and dancing to the Funky Chicken song. The students were also the first group to hear his new book, Funky Chicken: Mission Incrocable!

Chris described the importance of teacher correction to student writing - “there is always room for improvement”, he said. As a writer, he states, it takes a long time to get a book ready before it can be published. He has a jar as a “Think Tank” to keep his ideas for future stories. His first book was written as a play for his son while on school camp, this version was adjusted before making it to book form. “Funky Chicken - Chooks in Space” was written in line with the theme of Book week in 2013 celebrating Read Across the Universe. This book won the Award for Speech Pathology.

Weirdo Musicians rehearse. Athletes train. Practice is the secret to success for anything. Practice is the key! Jules Faber, illustrator of the famous Ahn Do Weirdo books, reiterated this to the students on Tuesday 22 May. He explained that you are not born with the skills to draw but it is a learned skill that is hard but also easy at the same time.

The students engaged in the presentation, showcasing their own artistic talents, drawing Weirdo, as Jules took them through the process step by step. He gave them plenty of time to complete their creation, describing that whatever speed you work at is the right speed for you and that mistakes are fine. He makes them everyday! There are no drawing police, only judgemental people – so draw however and whatever you please.

The students asked some great questions but were most excited by the information that the next Ahn Do book should be coming out in October. There will be some enthusiastic children lining up at the library to read some Halloween fun.

Stop! Look! Listen Thirty three students, set off from the Hawks Nest Koala Reserve and the bus shelter in Myall Street, last Friday to celebrate Walk Safely to School Day. Numbers were down this year, due to the fact that the walk had been postponed from the week prior due to inclement weather, and also the fact that Stage 3 were away on their Bathurst excursion. The five students that walked from Hawks Nest were lucky enough to see seven stingrays, 2 prawns and one very large eel along the way. Short stops were taken to observe our river and its beauty. Mrs Ingram and Miss Browne met 28 students and walked them along Myall Street to school. On such a beautiful morning we were lucky to see so many things as well as support walking safely with an adult to school. Many thanks to the parents (and pets) who walked with us. By Mrs Booth
