ABSTRACTThis document presents a model Comprehensive Career
Development Program for grades K-12 developed for the state of SouthCarolina. The model provides the framework for local school districtsto evolve a program that will meet the specific career developmentneeds for their district's students. The model is planned toorganize, expand, and extend competency-based career developmentstrategies, activities, and experiences in order to assist studentsin making realistic career goal plans and apprise them of how to usethe public school's curriculum and experiences to further theircareer goals. The program is presented in the following format forgrade levels K-3, 4-5, 6-9, and 10-12: (1) an overview describingcharacteristics and needs of students regarding career development;(2) stated career development objectives; and (3) competency-basedplanned activities involving counselors, teachers, parents,community, and administrators. Five appendixes provide the following:a sample student needs assessment survey for career exploration inmiddle and junior high schools; a curriculum plan for high schools; alist of occupational education programs in six areas (agriculture,business, health occupations, home economics, marketing, and tradeand industrial education); a list of nonoccupational educationprograms (consumer and homemaking, industrial technology,prevocational education, and mechanical nrawing) and applied andrelated courses (applied biology or chemistry, communications for theworkplace, mathematics for the technologies, and physics for thetechnologies); and a list of four curriculum resource guides and sixvideotapes on careers.
