• Thesecondtoylauncheslargerrings .• Thethirdoneisasmallmotorattachedtoa6-voltbat-terywithalligatorclips .Themotorhasanattachmentshapedliketheendofascrewdriver,andtheplasticringsitsonthetip .Studentsleaveonealligatorclipunattachedfromthebatteryandtouchittothecon-tactwhentheywanttolaunchthehelicopter .Afterafewminutes,Instructorpassesoutsomeothersizesofplasticrings .

• Peoplelearnedtojumpoververylargepuddles,andJackandJillcouldjumpwhilecarryingveryheavyobjects,likearefrigeratororacastironstove .

• TheminonsstartedhittingrocksintoMudvillewiththeirbaseballbats,sothepeoplehadabaseballgameagainsttheminions .Thepeoplelostthegame,andEvilMisterFredwonalltheirmoney .

• Thentheydecidedtohaveapuddlejumpingcontest,sinceJackandJillweresogoodatjumpingpuddles .Theyfilledpuddleswithchocolatepudding .

Transcript: Intro Onceuponatime,therewasaguywhoselastnamewasLily .It’sreallytoughwhenyou’reaguyandyourlastnameisLily .Sohehadtoprovethathewastough .Andtherewasahillbehindhishouse .SoLilywouldgotothetopofthehillandhe’drundownasfastashecouldandtrynottofalldownandgotumble,tumble,tumble,tumble,fumph,fumph,fumph,fumph,fumphdowntothebottom .Nowonedayhehadthisbrilliantidea,andheduct-tapedabigsticktothetopofhishead .It’skindofathinstick,likethat .Andherandownthehill,andthewindcaughtonthestick,andheglidedforawhile .Andhethought,“Wow,thisisreallygood!”Sohemadebettersticks .Hemadesticksthatlookedlikebirdwings,likethat .Andhe’drundownthehillthatway,andhecouldglideevenfurther .Everytimehe’drundownandjumpupintotheair--wheeee--andcrashatthebottom .Theproblemwasthatthiswingthingheputonhisheadwouldsometimestiltthisway,sometimesitwouldtiltthatway,andweirdlyenough,sometimesitwouldtiltbackwardsorforwards .It’sreallyroughwhenittiltsforwards,becausethenyoudoasomersaultwiththisthingstuckonyou .

Soheputatailonit .There,nowitlookslikeabird .It’sgotatail .Andwhenheputatailonit,itdidn’ttiltbackwardsorforwardsomuch,itwouldonlytiptotherightortheleft .Hethought,“Okay,I’llputonalittletoppiecehere,andmaybeitwon’ttiptotherightorleftsomuch .”Well,itstilltippedtotherightorleft,butitdidn’tturnsobadly .Andthenhehadtodosomegoofystuffwiththebackofthewingtokindofcontrolit .

Butonedaytherewasastrongsteadywindcoming .Hesaid,“Yeah,it’saperfectday!”Heranoutthere,grabbedthisthing,gotsomeropesonit,randownthehillasfastashecould,jumpedintheairandjustglidedaway,hundredsoffeet,andwasabletolandonthegroundsafely .Andhesaid,“Woo-hoo!Thisisreallygood!”andhetoldhisfriendsallaboutit .

Andthenanotherdaycameandthewindwasalmostasgood,andhesaid,“Yeah,I’mgoingtogoflying!”Soherandownthehill,flewintotheair,andthenthewindstopped .Andhethought,“Oh,”andwent“Aaaaaa”--crash!Andunfortunate-ly,hedied,andtheyburiedhim .RestinPeace .Buthewroteallabouteverythinghedidbeforehedied .Hedrewpicturesofeverythingthathetried,andhesenttheseinletterstopeopleallovertheplace .

Andthereweretwoguyswhogotsomeofthecopiesoftheletters .TheWrongBrothers .OrvilleandWilbur .Wilbur’sapig,andOrvilleispopcorn .Andtheystudiedallthisstuff,andtheysaid,“Well,wewanttodowhathedid,butwedon’twanttodie .”Sotheydecidedtogoouttoabeachwheretherewasalwaysacatsittingaround,andtherewasabirdflyingintheair .Andthebirdwasahawk .Sohere’sthe

Andthewindwasblowingthisway,let’ssay .Andhere’saguy .He’sgothisfeetdugintothesandandhe’shangingontoarope .AndtheropeisattachedtoawingkindoflikeLilyhad .HisrealnamewasOttoLilienthal,bytheway .Hewasarealguy .Andtheydecidedtoputonewingontopofanotherwing,withabunchofsticksbetweenthem .Andtheyhadthiswingthattheycouldfly,andtheydiscoveredthesamethingsthathedid .Youknow,it’shardtomakeitnotgoupanddownandgowham,wham,whamintothesand .Itwashardtomakeitsoitdidn’tgokkrrrrthiswayorkkrrrrthatway,orjustgommmrrrralldifferentdirections .

Sotheyaddedanotherwinginthefront,andtheyaddedtwowingsonthebacklikethat,up-and-down-ways .Andthentheymadeitsotheycouldpullontheropes .Ratherthanjusthavingjustonerope,theymadeitsotheycouldpullonacoupleofropesandcontrolwhatthisthingwasdoing .Thentheyfinallygotitsotheycouldmakeitgoupandstayup .Theycouldmakeitgodownandstaydown .Theycouldmakeitturnthisway,andtheycouldmakeitturnthatway .Andeverythinglookedreallycool .Andtheysaid,“Allright!Let’sgetonitandseeifwecanfly .”

Sooneofthemgotonitandtriedtotakeoffwiththeotherguyholdingtherope .Well,theycouldn’tdoit .Hewastooheavy .Sotheysaid,“Weneedtomakeonebigger .Andweneedmorepower .”Sotheybuilttheirowngasolineengine,areallylightweightgasolineengine .Andtheysaid,“Now,let’sputonpropellers .”Thentheysaidtothemselves,“Whatarepropellers?”becausepropellershadn’tbeeninventedyet .Ofcourse,LeonardodaVincihadmadepropellers,buttheymaynothaveknownaboutthat .

Sotheyinventedsomenicepropellersandtheyputthoseonit,hookedthemuptotheirengine,andthentheybuiltawoodenlaunchingrail .Andthentheyletthisthinggodownthislaunchingrail,andittookoffanditactuallyflew!Andthecatsaid,“Nicegoing!”Andthebirdsaid,“Yeah!”ThiswastheWrightBrothersatKittyhawkinwhat?1903orsomethinglikethat?Well,todaywe’regoingtotrytomakesomestufffly,andwe’regoingtodoiteasywaysandhardways .Butfirstweneedacrazystory .

Story: “Jack & Jill in Mudville”Onceuponatime,therewasdirt .Therewasawholebunchofdirt .Everywhereyoulooked,therewasdirteverywhere .Andsomebodydecidedtobuildacityoutofdirt .Sotheymadeamainstreetoutofdirt .Andthentheymadesomehousesoutofdirt .Theycouldmakesomecarsoutofdirt .Theymadewindowsoutofdirt .Andtheymadeastoreoutofdirt .Theyselldoughnuts,andthedoughnutsweremadeoutofdirt .[Students: Eeeeewww!]Well,ifyouwanttomakeadoughnut,whatdoyouneed?Flour,right?Well,flowersaremadeoutofdirt .[Student: You need a coconut.]Andyeah,therewasacoconutstoremadeoutofdirt,andatepeemadeoutofdirt .Andtherewerepeoplelivingthere .Theydidn’tmindlivingthere .Itwasaprettynicetown .It’scalledDirttown .AndJackandJillwerevisitingthere,andtheylikedthepeoplethere,sotheydecidedtohangaroundforawhile .

AndEvilMisterFredhappenedtobeflyingoverinhisvacuumcleaneroneday,andhesawDirttown .Andhesaid,“Now,there’sanicetown .Lookatthosepoormiserablepeopleoutthereinthedustandthedirt .Lifedoesn’tgetanyworsethanthat .Andthenhesawthattheywerelaughingandplayinganddancing .Andhesaid,“Whatiswrongwiththosecreatures?Aretheyidiotsorwhat?Theylikebeinginthedirt!”Andthesunwouldcomeoutanditwouldgetwaytoohot,buttheydidn’tmind .Theyjustwerehappythere .

Hesaid,“Well,I’llshowthem .”SoEvilMisterFredputaropeonhisvacuumcleanerwithahook,andheflewoff .Alittlewhilelater,hecamebackwithacloud,andheleftthecloudrightoverDirttownandflewaway .Well,ofcourse,nowitstartedtorain .AndsonowtheyhadtorenameitMudville .Andtherainmadebigpuddlesintheroad,itmeltedalotoftheirbuildings,andlifebecamecold,wet,andmiserableinMudville .AndMudvillehadamayor,hisnamewasCasey .Helikedtoplaybaseball .AndthepeopleinMudvillesaid,“Well,eventhoughit’scoldandmiserableandmuddy,we’llmakethebestofit .”Sotheyjustrebuiltuptheirplaces,theyputsomestrawontheroofstohelpkeeptherainoff,andsometimestheywouldneedsomedoughnuts .Sothey’dgotothedoughnutstoreandbuytenortwentypoundsofdoughnuts .They’dneedsomecoconuts,sothey’dbuyfiftyorsixtypoundsofcoconuts .Andtheymightneedsomeotherstuff,andthey’dcarryallthisstuffhome .Well,they’dcometoabigoldpuddle,andifyouwerecarryingthisheavystuffandwalkedintothepuddle,you’dsinkintothepuddleuntilitwasrightuptoyoureyes .Sotheydidn’twalkthroughpuddles,theyjumpedoverthepuddles .

Now,ifyou’recarryingalotofheavystuffandyoujumpoverapuddle,ittakesalotofstrength .Butifyoudothisdayafterdayafterday,thepeoplegotreallystronglegsandarmsfromcarryingstuff .AndJackandJillwerealsodoingthis .Theypracticedcarryingthings .Infact,theywerealittlebitcrazyaboutit .Theyputweightsontheiranklesandtheirwrists,andontopoftheirheads,andjumpedover

Evil Mister Fred hooked a cloud and made it rain on the town, now called Mudville.

thepuddles .AndprettysoonJackandJillcouldjumpoverthebiggestpuddles,athirty-foot-longpuddle .Theycouldrunandjumpoveritcarryingsomeoftheseweights .Andthepeopleintownsaid,“Whoa,youguysaregood!?AndJackandJillsaid,“Ah,butwe’regoingtokeepworking .Wewanttogetbetter .”Sotheydid .TheyworkedandworkedandworkedandworkeduntilonedayJillwasabletojumpoverthegiantpuddle,thethirty-footer,carryingarefrigeratoronherhead .[Student: Did it have pizza in it?]Yeah,andithadpizzainit .AndJacksaid,“Whoa,thatwasreallygood!Iwanttotrythat .”ButJackusedacastironstove,andhemadeit .Andeverybodyintownsaid,“Woo-hoo!Youguysaregood!”

Well,EvilMisterFredwasn’tcontentjustwatchingfromupabove .Hedecidedtobuildacastlenearbyjusttoshowoff .Everydayhe’dbringacloudtokeepMudvillemuddy,buthelethiscastlestaydry .Andhisminionswereoutthere .Hiscastleismadeoutofstone .Theminionsareouttherewiththeirbaseballbats,andthey’velearnedtohitrockswithabaseballbat .Throwarockintheairandwhack!--theycouldhittheserocks .AndsotheywerelaunchingrocksatthepeopleinMudville--whack!Here’smoreminionshittingrocks,andthey’rehittingeachother .That’sjustthewaytheyare .Andlet’sputEvilMisterFreduphere .AndEvilMisterFredsaid,“Youknow,weoughttohaveacontestwiththoseguys .Let’shaveabaseballgame .Myminionsaresogoodathittingstuff,we’llbeatthemplayingbaseball .”

SoheranoverthereandtalkedtoCasey .Andhesaid,“Casey,let’shaveabaseballgame .”Andsotheyhadabaseballgame .AndCaseygottobatandwasstruckout,andtheylostthegame .AndthenEvilMisterFredwonfromthetownofMudvilleonemilliondollarsingold .Sohehadthisbigpileofgold .AndpeopleinMudvillewerereallysadaboutthisbecausetheylostamillionbucks .Yeah,andthegoldwasmadeoutofdirt .AndthepeopleinMudvillesaid,“We’vegottowinthatback .JackandJill,whatarewegoingtodotowinthatmoneyback?”JackandJillsaid,“Well,Idon’tknow .”AndthenCaseysaid,“Waitaminute .Youguysaregoodatjumping .Let’shaveacontest .Apuddlejumpingcontest .”

Sotheyorderedabouttentonsofpudding,chocolatepudding,andtheydugholesintheground,andtheyputpuddingintheholes .Andthentheyputboardsnexttoeachhole .Therewasasmallhole,andamediumlengthhole,andalonghole .AndtheyweregoingtochallengeEvilMisterFred’sminionstoapuddlejumpingcontest .Thisisperfectbecauseminionshavenolegs .They’vegotbigfeet .They’rejuststubs .Andtheymadethegigantopuddlethatwaseighthundredfeetlong,likethat .

Experiment: “Puddle Jumpers”So,thefirstexperimentiseasy .Wehaveregulartoysthatyougetatthe99-centstore .Andthesehavehelicoptersonthem,andtheideaistomakethehelicopterflyandseehowhighyoucanmakeitfly .Now,beingthattheseare99cents,theyusuallylastabouttwoclasses .Sodon’tpulltoohard,becauseifyoukeeppullingafteritgoesthatfar,youendupwithastringinonehandandatoygunintheotherhand .We’llseehowhighthosego .Andthenwe’regoingtocomparethesetoanothervarietythatwehave .Thesearen’ttheKidKillers .TheKidKillersarelast .Andtheseguys,youcanpullthemandseeiftheyfly,andseehowhighthosego .

So,we’regoingtousejustthosetwovarieties,andyou’rego-ingtotradewitheachothertoseehowtheywork .Trytonotflythemthatway[toward shelves],becauseoncetheygothatway,weusuallyneverseethemagainuntiltwoorthreeyearslaterwhenwepullaboxofftheshelfandsay,“Oh,lookitthere--helicopters .”Trytoflythemthisway[towards the whiteboard],andthey’llbounceoffthewallandcomebackdown .

Now,ifyoudon’twanttohavetoholdithereandtrytomatchitontothose,wehavealligators .Andifyousqueezetheirheads,theirmouthopensandcloses .Ifyousqueezesideways,ithurtstheirears .Andyoucanputthealligatorsonthemotor[attaches alligater clips to motor wires and attaches only one alligator clip to a battery terminal],andnowyou’vegotthishandy-dandyswitch .Youcantouchthealligatoronthere[touches unconnected alligator clip to the remaining battery terminal]anditgoeslikethat[jerks motor and helicopter flies off.]Andtheideaistomakethisthingflyashighasyoucanwithwhatyouhave .Afterawhile,we’llbehandingoutdifferentonesofthese[helicopters],andwe’lljustseehowhighwecanmakethemgo .Soyou’regoingtostayinthesamegroupsandwe’regoingtopassoutbatteriesandwiresandmotorsandpropellers,soyouguyscantrystuffout .[Students assemble the parts and try out the small helicopters. After a few minutes, Instructor passes out some additional heli-copters in different sizes.]Canyoumakeitsothatitdoesn’tfly?

Sointhiscase,you’regoingtoputonyourpropeller,spinitup,andjustsoyoudon’tgetyourfingerstangledinthings,we’regoingtogiveyouaplasticcup .Andtheideaistohaveonememberofyourgroupholdthebatteryandthepropellerandthecuplikethat .Andthentheothermembertouchesthattothewire .[Uses cup to hold propeller in place while it spins up, then pulls cup away and propeller takes off.]Andseeifyoucantouchtheceiling .Itcanbedone .[Students add second battery and launch propellers with cups for a few minutes.]Trynottobreakthetipoff .Don’tpushtoohard .
