WSU Math and Science Ed PhD Program Information for Middle School and High School Math and Science Teachers

Dear Math/Science Educator,

As someone who has a strong foundation in mathematics and science and the field of education, I would like to let you know about our graduate program in Math and Science Education here on the WSU Spokane campus. This is a program for people interested in getting a PhD in mathematics or science education, or in a combination of the two. The program is focused on educational research in the fields of mathematics and/or science education and graduates have the knowledge, experiences, and dispositions for a successful career in higher education as well as other areas related to STEM education.

Our program is designed for working professionals so all courses are in the evening and can be taken on a part time or full time basis. We realize that many people pursuing a PhD degree plan to continue in their current job position so the pro-gram is flexible and accessible. To that end, the program is available at any of the four main campuses: Pullman, Spokane, Tri-Cities, and Vancouver and is connected seamlessly across the sites. All courses are offered over our teleconferencing system, a weekly seminar allows for regular communication, and an annual face-to-face retreat helps keep us all connected. We collaborate across sites as both faculty and students; for example, we have students on one campus with an advisor on another.

Listed below is the link to the program website where you can access the student handbook which contains resources such as syllabi of sample courses or course requirements for the degree.

If you would like more information or have specific questions about the program, please do not hesitate to contact me at the email listed below. If you would like to receive application materials or have questions about the application or eligibil-ity requirements, please contact Kelly LaGrutta at [email protected].

I hope to hear from you soon!

From the Desk of Michelle Brenner

Read across America with Dr. Seuss’s Birthday Celebration

Read across America is such an amazing way to celebrate the joy of reading and writing with our students. In fact, it is one of my most favorite days of the school year! To demonstrate what a nerd I am, I would mark in my plan book to begin prepping for this day in January. I wanted to be sure that this one day was filled with magical, engaging activities ranging from interactive read-alouds and read-a-thons to science experiments with Oobleck.

Oh boy, did I build up this day with my students. It was pure bliss watching the students file into the classroom with the excitement and anticipation beaming from their faces! Then, out of nowhere it hit me like a ton of bricks…How can I en-capsulate the spirit of this one day and recreate the magic to sustain this joy and love for reading every day in our class-rooms? The answer: Read Aloud to students every day!

The Power of the Read-Aloud

Conversations around Read-Aloud usually begins with comments similar to this- “Oh, this is something my previous stu-dents loved me to do, but I just don’t have the time just to read to my class anymore.” or “Reading aloud to students isn’t really teaching.” However, we cannot afford—better yet, our students cannot afford for us to ignore this powerful teach-ing opportunity. Reading to students not only broadens their understanding of themselves, others, and the world, but hearing the language of stories from all genres helps to develop the language that is only found in books. And, we are not only talking about our students in our elementary buildings, but in our middle school as well, benefit from listening to sto-ries being read. It is so important that our very first ELA shift with our current state standards reads “Students need the regular practice with complex text and academic language”.

When we read aloud, we create a model for students of what readers look like and how to make sense of text. Hearing text read aloud is all it takes to shift some of our students from being students who can read to students who want to read.

Because our students' listening levels are typically two years higher than their reading levels, reading aloud is an important part of increasing their reading levels. Steven L. Layne (2015) says, "When the text selected for read-aloud time has stu-dents 'listening up' one or two grade levels, teachers become the medium for exposing those students to more mature vo-cabulary, more complex literary devices, and more sophisticated sentence structures than they would be finding in the grade-level texts they could navigate on their own" (In Defense of Read-Aloud: Sustaining Best Practice, p. 55). Reading aloud is an important part of accelerating student achievement.

If we want our readers to grow, we must read to them, and we must read to them well. It isn't just a practice with a strong

research base, but one that is enjoyable and richly rewarding for both teachers and our children.

Trentwood’s Fill the Backpack Food Drive

Don't be fooled by these silly faces! These hardworking Trentwood ASB students recently held their third annual, "Fill The Backpack Food Drive," for our EV weekend food bag program. We would like to say thank you to our generous Trentwood Families and Staff for their donations!

Arachnids Return to Trentwood! Since the first day of school, Trentwood 6th graders have waited impatiently for this moment. After spending several weeks reading, writing, researching and presenting about spiders, they had the opportunity to see several up close and per-sonal. EV alum Casey Brown brought his vast collection of arachnids and knowledge to us and helped make memories, which will never be forgotten for the 6th grade. He will be back March 16th for our Experience Science Night!

100th Day of School at CCS!

100 Day!--the 100th day of school. Our primary students really enjoy dressing up for this day. So do the teachers!

January PACE Awards at Otis! Our guest speaker was Stephanie Olsen, Spokane prosecuting attorney. She spoke to students about her professional responsibility as an attorney, to fairly represent her clients as well as opposing counsel.

February PACE Awards at Otis-Honesty These students earned an award for the Character Trait of Hones-ty in the month in February. Teachers nominated these students for always telling the truth (even if they think it might get them in trouble), taking ownership of their actions and asking for permis-sion before taking things.

Turnbull Wildlife Refuge Visits Otis Orchards 3rd Graders! The 3rd graders at Otis learned all about different types of owls and dissected owl pellets with Turnbull Wildlife Center
