Jay Gallagher- Keith
Bauer and I went to
TRIKW. Great time. Met
Macca, there is a pic on
FB. New personal best
2:43:58. I'll go again next
year. Year two of the Key
West Triathlon was great
again. I do love this race.
How could you not? So
here's a brief report. Fortu-
nately Keith Bauer and I
both like to get to races
early so we will have
plenty of time to deal with
any hicups on race morn-
ing, and not be late for the
start. All was good.
It was a wetsuit legal race, but the water was-
n't really that cold. I wore one anyway.
1500m ...or .92 miles. 27:35 on the swim
against a current. So it was a pretty great
swim for me. 8th place in my age group. The
race was definitely bigger this year than last
year. Word got around I guess. The bike was
super windy and pretty hard. 40K, or 24.8
miles. A major high point of the race was that
the bike course took us through the Naval Air
Station. The Navy was exercising fighter jets
while we were racing and it was really awe-
some. When I turned one corner and the fight-
ers were right there warming up on the tarmac
it sent chills up my spine, literally. Crazy hard
against the wind, and pretty fast going back
with it. 1:11:44 on the bike. Average speed
20.74. Not bad. The run was, as it always is,
my nemisis, but I think I did very well today.
It's a really beautiful run along the ocean. I
pushed hard to get under an hour and man-
aged 59:09 for 10K or 6.2 miles. Last year I
got 3:02 in this race and today I got 2:43:58.
18 minutes is a great improvement, and my
fastest Olympic time yet. So I'm very happy
about it all.Now for the real highlight of the
day, Chris McCormack is here. I'm a real fan
of his. For those who don't know of him, he is
a two time Ironman world champion. 2007
and 2010. An amazing athlete. Well, I raced
with him today. As I was about a half mile
into my run he and I passed. He was almost
Tough Mudder I participated in Tough Mudder on Sun 12/4. Since I've been recovering from an injury the past two months, my goal was just to do what I could, and stop if it was too much. I did complete the course, but had to skip a few of the obstacles, and hobbled the last 3 miles due to knee pain. I lost some time (and lost my team) due to taking a team mate back a half-mile for medical help. The ice bath may have been the most painful thing I've encountered. Everest was awesome!!! Can't wait to do it next year! 11.5 miles, 24(?) obstacles- about 4 hours. Most memorable event I have participated in to date. Kari Eichen
done with the run as I was
heading out. I said "Macca!"
He said "Hey Man!", smiled
and waved as we passed. Very
cool. And he was the overall
winner today. I found him af-
ter the race and had a chance
to talk to him for a bit and it
was a great experience. He's a
very personable guy and it
was a pleasure to meet him.
And I got a picture taken with
im which I will post shortly.
