Connecting Churches to

Change Our World

LEADERSHIP MATTERS by Roger Yancey, D.Min.

In the previous article, we examined the importance of communicating the gospel so that others can understand His grace within their own worldview. Today we try to put legs to this concept.

The message of the Bible isn’t just that of God redeeming His people; it’s also the story of God raising His people from a position of shame to the honorable position of joint-heirs with Christ. Only God can elevate – no one can elevate himself. The unwritten rule in the East is that every person knows their place & must remain in it. The gospel inverts that.

All Muslims must ritually wash themselves before reading a Quran, praying in the mosque, etc. because living in an evil world defiles his hands. Purification must occur before he can approach God. Biblical parallels abound: In Ex. 30, Aaron & his sons were required to wash their hands/feet before entering the Tent of Meeting or approaching the altar or they would die. Jesus provided cleansing through the washing of his blood. Leviticus 13 & 14 deal with ways that God provided to the priests in the cleansing of lepers (someone who was highly shamed). Jesus reached out to lepers (i.e. reflects God’s desire to reach to those in places of shame to restore them.) In the Old Testament, blemished animals were not permitted for sacrifice. But Jesus showed the Pharisees that man himself is unclean, not just the dietary laws or the outside of the cup.

In the West, we don’t normally use the word ‘defilement’ to describe man’s sinful condition. But the Law was put in place not only to point out man’s guilt and need of a Savior, but to also point out man’s defilement and need for a Cleanser. Cleansing is critical to understanding grace. Man is not just totally depraved, he’s totally defiled. With that understanding, now you can pro-vide context when sharing stories like the cleansing of the lepers (Luke 5), the Gentile woman defiled in the eyes of the Jews (Matt. 15), and the Jewish woman who bled for 12 years and was unable to enter the Temple to approach God (Mark 5). These are stories that hit shame-honor cultures right between the eyes. So while the Romans Road might not speak to their hearts and worldview, stories such as those listed above definitely will. In fact, I would argue that once you can get your mind around this concept of man’s need for a Cleanser from defilement, you will begin to see shame-honor passages covering the pages of Scripture. Which is not surprising, given that almost all of its original authors originated from within shame-honor cul-tures themselves.

I hope that this series on Worldview has been helpful, even if the short confines of a newsletter don’t permit a proper study. Keep in mind, also, that God has placed these peoples from different worldviews into your path for a reason. As I’ve stated before, your lives intersect with the lives of those whom God is already working in – even if you can’t see it. Having a solid worldview grid can never replace earnest prayer & gospel proclamation – it simply nuances the platform from which you deliver the saving truth.

If you have more questions, feel free to contact me at the TEBA office.

Grace & Peace, Darrell Ingram

THE IMPORTANCE OF WORLDVIEW (PART 3) By: Darrell Ingram

Bro. Roger Lender was born and raised in California and graduated from California Baptist University. He went on to attend and graduate from South Western Baptist Theological Seminary where he met and married his wife Keren. Upon graduating he planted a church in Southern California and served there until 2005 where they answered the call to serve with the IMB. The Lender family worked as missionaries in Vietnam for a year and then transferred to the Middle East and served there until 2016 when God called him to be the pastor of North Woods Baptist Church.

North Woods Baptist Church first opened its doors in 1981. Since then God has been moving in the church allowing several ministries opportunities, such as VBS, MOPS, Angle Tree, and Project Beautiful Feet. Recently the church went through a training in evangelism in preparation for Project Beautiful Feet, saturating the community with the gospel 6 times a year. In the two times of going out into their community (so far) they have been able to share the gospel 23 times and have seen nine people come to know Christ. Please join us in prayer for them as they are out in the in community reaching the lost, and pray for those that they encounter who are having a difficult time seeing the need they have for the Lord and the body of Christ.

Over the last few years as a church the congregation has worked through Mission, Vision, and a New Member’s Process. North Woods Baptist Church has really embraced the challenges to change for the sake of renewing the vision of being a Great Commission Church. They ask that you pray they continue to operate based upon Matthew 18, and they will walk in unity, staying focused on the task of reigniting a Great Commission Vision for growth and effectiveness in their community.

CHURCH/MISSION FOCUS: North Woods Baptist Church By: Natalie Bowman

We began 2018 with a very eventful January. Daniel Whitehurst, CPA braved the winter snow and ice to provide our Tax Seminar. While the office was closed due to ice we were able to provide the conference online with more than 24 participants in both the morning and afternoon sessions. It was a great way for us to measure the effectiveness of our utilization of the online meeting platform and we appreciate all of you who participated and gave us feedback. So many of you related to how helpful the seminar was for you and appreciated Daniel’s willingness to answer questions by email. We will be offering additional training and conferences online in the days to come as a way of assisting more churches to be able to participate.

More than 100 participants gathered on a Friday and Saturday at the TEBA to take part in the Strategos Training. On the first day churches received information and tools needed to start up their safety or security ministry and how to formalize or make more professional their existing security ministry. Policy needs were discussed as well as the elements that needed to be included for effective training. On day two participants learned about Intruder Awareness, Response and Conflict Management. Training was given on how to build a sense of awareness and how to assess possible conflict situations. Additional training was provided on establishing a healthy threat response and how the other ministries of the church can work with each other for a secure church environment.

Several pastors came together for our annual Pastor Prayer and Planning Retreat at Selah Springs Ranch in Brady. Pastor Larry York of Crossroads BC in The Woodlands was our Pastor in Residence for the retreat and was very gracious in sharing his time and ministry journey. Pastors were able to have a getaway providing a place for personal reflection, planning and prayer in a wonderful location while getting to know other pastors from the Association. It was a tremendous joy to get to have this time with some of our pastors. I continue to be encouraged by the way I see pastors within the TEBA work together, pray for each other and seek to help member churches in an unselfish manner. It truly is a blessing to be part of such a great group of churches.

On March 1 from 9 am till 3 pm we are looking forward to having Dr. Bruce Webb, pastor of FBC Woodlands who will leading a training on Creating Church Unity. This study will help you understand the origins of conflict, the impact of different personality styles and how churches can respond in a healthy way to head off or deal with conflict. If you want to be part of this study you can register by contacting Natalie Bowman at [email protected] before February 25 so we can make arrangements.

On March 2-3 we will be gathering at Trinity Pines Retreat Center for our Deacon Retreat for Minis-try Staff Teams, Deacons and Deacon Candidates with Pastor Jim Henry of Downtown Orlando Baptist Church. This will be a time of learning about the ministry of the Deacons and how they can serve along-side the pastor and staff members to encourage healthy church relationships. You will find in Jim a serv-ant’s heart that will bless your life. In Kingdom Service,

Executive Director/Area Missionary
