    What is Tech Prep?

    A high school program that prepares students to continue

    in a college program leading to a certificate, an

    Associate's Degree or beyond.

    A pathway to earn college credit in high school through

    AP, dual credit, or articulated courses.

    A combination of college and technical courses designed

    to prepare students for high-skill, high-wage, or high-

    demands.

    Tech Prep Programs

    A plan to assist students in making a smooth transition

    from one level of education to another without duplication

    in learning.

    Includes an outline of a Recommended High School

    Graduation Plan and a two-year degree or certificate.Together these are called a 6-year (4+2) or Tech Prep

    plan.

    The College Board Advanced Placement

    Program (AP)

    A nationally recognized program for introducing students

    to college-level work while they are still in high school.

    Students enroll in higher-level academic courses

    identified for Advanced Placement

    Eligible to receive college credit based on high schoolcourse grades and performance on national AP

    examinations.

    These classes will be indentified on the high school

    transcript with an P in the course code

    Dual Credit

    A process through which students gain early admission to

    a college or university and enroll in academic and/or

    technical courses for college credit before they graduate

    from high school (concurrent enrollment).

    Students may also receive high school credit on

    successful completion of these courses (dual credit).

    Courses can be Academic or Technical

    Tuition for the college course is usually paid for either by

    the student, scholarships, or reimbursed by the school

    district.

    These classes will be indentified on the high school

    transcript with an D in the course code

    College Credit by Articulation

    Articulation is college credit to be awarded to

    the student upon fulfillment of certain criteria as

    defined in local agreements.

    Two types of Articulation

    Advanced Technical Credit Program (ATC)

    The Advanced Technical Credit (ATC)

    Program

    An advanced statewide placement program that wasinitiated in 1999

    Provides a method for high school students who continue

    technical programs in college to receive credit without

    duplication of coursework.

    Eligible to receive credit for courses that are part of anAssociate of Applied Science (AAS) degree or certificate

    plan offered by public two-year colleges.

    For award of college credit, most articulated courses

    must be taken at the junior or senior levels.

    These classes will be indentified on the high schooltranscript with an A in the course code

    Local Articulation

    Provides high school students articulated college creditfor high school or college courses not covered by the

    Advanced Technical Credit Program (Statewide

    Articulation)

    A method to articulate courses and programs with

    colleges not participating in the ATC Program. Conditions for award of credit for courses are described

    in locally developed articulation agreements.

    Some universities may also honor these courses.

    These classes will be indentified on the high school

    transcript with an A in the course code and identificationof the college courses and the participating college and

    course articulations in the local use area on the reverse

    side of the transcript.

    How do I get started?

    Ask your counselor to show you available Tech Prep

    plans your high school offers

    Enroll in articulated, dual credit, or AP courses that will

    apply towards the college major that interest you

    Complete courses as a with a minimum grade of 80 (B orbetter).

    Freshmen and sophomores must take additional

    articulated courses as a junior or senior to qualify for

    college credit.

    discover your own interests and talents.

    Practical, real-world experiences prepare you to pursue

    your interests and goals in a wide variety of high-skill,

    high-wage, or high-demand technical careers.

    If you change your mind you can move into a program

    that better fits your needs.

    How Do I Receive My College

    Credits? Enroll in a participating college within 15 months of

    graduation.

    Complete a Petition for Creditform.

    College website or admissions office

    Take a copy of petition form and high school transcript to

    the college and tell the college admissions staff that you

    took high school courses that may count for college

    credit.

    The college can only award you credit for courses that

    they offer.

    How Do I Receive my College

    Credit?

    Select a college technical certificate or degree plan that

    includes one or more of those courses.

    Some colleges may delay the awarding of your credit until

    you have completed six hours of college credit

    Finally, check with the college registrar to make sure your

    credit is posted to your college transcript.
