Practice-Based Coaching* FRAMEWORK
The cyclical nature of Practice-Based Coaching emphasizes that goals, plans, and progress toward desired outcomes of coaching are regularly reviewed and updated.

Practice-Based Coaching
Practice-Based Coaching is a cyclical process for supporting practitioners’ use of effective teaching practices that lead to positive outcomes for children. The coaching-cycle components are:
1. planning goals and action steps, 2. engaging in focused observation, and 3. reflecting on and sharing feedback about teaching
practices. Practice-Based Coaching occurs within the context of a collaborative
partnership.

External Coach
• All internal coaches use research-based strategies to support adult learning and professional development
Quality Coaching
• All teachers and staff use Recommended Practices

engaged and learning

The External Coach
• Linked to an outside agency/team to ensure that training is translated to practice
• Works directly with teachers and/or teams to ensure implementation fidelity
• Facilitate the collection of data to use for decision making and evaluating outcomes

The Internal Coach
• Develops a coaching relationship with the teacher or practitioner
• Provides frequent coaching sessions and monitors teacher’s growth with implementation
• Guides professional development experiences to assist the teacher

Minnesota’s Coaching Journey….
Practice Based Coaching brought to Minnesota through ECTA RP2 Technical Assistance grant.
“Old Way:” Master Cadre trainers provided external coaching to programs.
“New Way:” Trainers and External Coaches have separate roles and functions. Training and Coaching is provided in a consistent manner across the state. Coaching supports have increased.
