To achieve an energy future for all that is accessible, affordable, reliable, and environmentally responsible, we will need technology innovations to invent the future of clean and affordable energy. This creates an incredible opportunity for all of us to shape this future. Today I want to talk to you about the ways that we can address this challenge. And in doing so, I want to challenge your thinking, and hopefully have you look at our energy system in a way you’ve not known or considered before. And if by the end of this talk I’ve also convinced you to consider a career in energy, then even better! Specifically, I’m going to talk to you all about how successful advancement of clean energy solutions touches on the intersection of 3 key areas: technology and innovation, policy, and markets.

EIA's Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) is now forecasting that 2016 will be the first year that natural gas-fired generation exceeds coal generation in the United States on an annual basis. Natural gas generation first surpassed coal generation on a monthly basis in April 2015, and the generation shares for coal and natural gas were nearly identical in 2015, each providing about one-third of all electricity generation.
