20th CENTURY

WASTEMANAGEMENT

“How do we get rid of our waste efficiently with minimum damage to public health and the environment?”

RESOURCEMANAGEMENT

“How do we handle our discarded resources in ways which do not deprive future generations of some, if not all,

of their value?”Source: Dr. Paul Connett, Zero Waste, Power Point

What is SAT?• SAT Methodology …… Integrates Environmental, Social and Economic

Considerations… Focuses on environment and development together

and puts them at the centre of the economic and political decision making process

... Can be adapted to country specific parameters and constraints

Screening

Scoping

Detailed Assessment

Customized Criteria and Indicators

considering environmental, social

and economic considerations

Three -Tier Assessment

Training for technology support• Training for project teams on the

applications of SAT methodology for pilot projects

• Regional training for policy makers and practitioners on SAT as a tool for decision-making

• Important considerations to modify the technologies for local conditions

Lessons learned!• Local project teams and political support is vital to implement

pilot projects. Active cooperation between national and local government is essential to create enabling environment.

• Stakeholders participation is a key during planning process to ensure successful implementation.

• Many countries do not have national waste strategy and this makes it difficult for local governments to develop policy framework for waste management.

• Information on technologies is limited. The stakeholders in the developing countries are eager to review the case studies before making their choices.

• Most of the technology exhibitions are in developed countries. Virtual exhibitions is a possibility.

• International organizations can be good facilitators for dialogue between technology providers and technology buyers/users in developing countries to make right choices for appropriate technology.
