KUKURU SAND PLAYKukuru class children love playing in the sand. They are getting use to
play with sand. Younger children enjoy touching the sand, but older
children don’t just enjoy the feeling, they go for the sandbox tools and
different containers to pour sand out over and over again. Sensory
play isn't just about touch. It's about engaging all the senses they use to
learn about the world around them. In fact, the more senses children
use during an activity, the more learning potential it has. Sensory play
can even help children meet developmental milestones!
DRAMATIC PLAY IN THE TODDLER CLASS
“I am princess!” “I am cooking like my mom!” When you walk into our toddler classrooms, you will be
overwhelmed by the sounds of excited children’s voices. In our toddler classrooms, children dress up and pretend
to be whoever they want to become. The teachers incorporate a variety of materials that encourage dramatic play;
materials such as hats, masks, colorful dresses, vest, and headsets. The dramatic play in our toddler classes has been
centered around “Housekeeping”. When we actually watch children play, we see them reinventing scenes that might
take place in other areas of life such as the house, restaurant, grocery store, or the hospital. They try to make sense
out of what they have observed from adults as they mimic adult behavior and verbal expression through role play.
Dramatic play is an excellent way for children to develop their imagination and creativity. Also, it enhance a child’s
social, emotional, communicative, physical and cognitive skill.
KAFUU MOVERS AND SHAKERS
Pre-schoolers need play and exercise
that helps them continue to develop
important motor skills — kicking or
throwing a ball, playing tag or follow the
leader, hopping on one foot, riding a bike
with training wheels, freeze dancing, or
running obstacle courses; with that in
mind, Mami and Iraida sensei have been
incorporating dancing routines with
Kafuu class children.
Mami sensei always includes dance
choreographies at the end of her circle
time giving children an outlet to jump,
dance, shake, and swing their hips, the
perfect recipe for fitness fun.
NUUJI RHYTHM, MUSIC AND OPERETTA
As Megumi plays the piano, the children move along with the tune.
Different types of movement such as walking, sitting, and lying down,
all matched to the sounds of the piano. If the piano stopped, the
children stop. If the piano starts, then the children start to move again.
Each tune has a different command and children have a lot of fun as
they concentrate and wait on what tune will comes next. Children
are so dramatic and cute when we are playing this in our class.
Operettas are a great way to use words to make a whole story with
music. We are doing them in Japanese and it is a good way for
children to memorize Japanese words. Children become characters
and are playful with acting out the various emotions of the characters
in the story. We believe that acting will teach children to empathize
and lead to the growth of their heart.
We are always impressed by out children’s fast developments. The
children’s big smiles are a source of our happy energy. Thank you so
much Nuuji class!
KUGANI CLASS CIRCLE TIME
Daily circle time begins with Japanese/English greetings. Calendar time includes;
month, date, days of the week, and read aloud with children. Each day, we have the
children divided into four groups for circle time helpers, lunch helpers, bedding/rest
time helpers, and clean up helpers. Every day the new groups of children act as the
circle time helpers and help the teacher with counting the children and teachers.
After the counting is done, we try some simple addition together to see how many
children and teachers are at school for the day. When reading the calendar
numbers 1 to 31 in English and Japanese, children are able to read on their own,
eagerly and confidently. Also, they all love singing the days of the week song. We
hear some children singing circle time songs during center time. During the circle
time, we have another fun activity called "How are you feeling today?“ This activity
is set up so that children can express their own feelings in their own words. First,
they will find and pick their own name off the white board and put their name on
the picture of the feeling chart that fits their own feelings for the day. This part of
circle time is particularly important for us to use as one of our tools to meet the
each child's emotional needs daily. Also, children will able to express their feelings,
understand others, and build relationships with their peers as well as teachers. By
participating in the circle time every day, children share a wonderful time with
friends and teachers. Learning numbers, calendar is great way to start the day and
fun activity time for children and teachers.
KUGANI MUD PLAYThe class took a field trip in September to a mud water pool. All the children
were very much looking forward to playing in the mud. Before the trip, children
in the class seemed excited about the destination and could not wait to get
there. Some children were surprised and not too sure of the feeling between
their toes when they entered the great big mud water pool for the first time,
but soon got use to it and as time went on, they enjoyed playing ice cream
shops in the mud water pool. There were also swings and a big slide for them
to play on and all the children had a chance to play tug-of-war.
The Kugani children were very happy and all said, "It was fun playing in the mud
pool!!“. They were all very excited and couldn't stop talking about it during
their picnic lunch.
Shinka class will go to Kin Mud Park in October1
TANCHA NO OKA KEIROKAI
In September, the children of Shinka and Kugani classes
participated in the annual event Keiroukai, at the
Tancha no Oka elder daycare home. Keiroukai is the
respect for the age celebration in Japan.
The Shinka class started the event with a traditional Eisa
dance. After dancing, the Kugani Class sang an
Okinawan children's folk song "Ha-nuhandui", and the
English song, "Skinnamarink love".
We were able to see the wonderful smiles of the
Grandpas and Grandmas of Tancha no Oka, the
experience was wonderful to all the children as well.
In particular, when children gave the grandparents some
shoulder massages during one of the songs, it was a
very heart warming sight and valuable experience for
both the chidren and grandparents.
We believe that this wonderful experience will benefit
the children in many ways, and they will grow up to be
caring big brothers and sisters.
SHINKA CALENDARThe calendar is one of the first things we do with the kids everyday. Because
the Shinka children are a bit older, we do a lot during our calendar time. The
children learn the basics, like days of the week, months of the year, seasons,
weather, and counting, in both English and Japanese. The kids love doing the
"jump, clap, count". We count forwards and backwards during this! Sometimes
the teacher leads the circle time and sometimes the circle time helpers lead.
The circle time helpers are a group of children whose classroom job is to help
with, or lead circle time. The groups rotate weekly, so everyone is able to have
a chance being a circle time helper.
We also started adding what the temperature is next to the weather. Due to
this, the children started learning how to read the word "hot", since we started
this during the summer months! The teacher will also write the dates and
days of special events, field trips, holidays, when new friends will be joining the
class, and when old friends will be leaving the class. We also use a numbered
paper chain to count down the days until our next field trip. Each day one
child will come up and cut one of the rings off the chain, until there are no
more left. This is nice because rather than just talking about how many days are
left, this gives them a visual as well. It's a great activity for our visual and tactile
learners!
Some new phrases we started adding to our circle time are "the day after
tomorrow" and "the day before yesterday", "this week", "next week", and "last
week". These are a bit difficult to use, but the children are having fun learning
about them!
Lastly, we love using songs and games with the calendar. We have 3-4 different
days of the week and months of the year songs/finger plays that incorporate
math. The children love singing and moving to the songs.
SHINKA CLASS VISTSLOCAL FARM
In September, the Shinka Class took a fieldtrip to Kiyuna
Farm, in Ogimi. On this trip, the class saw many farm
animals, such as goats, pigs, and
cows. The highlight of the trip was when the children
were able to milk the cows! During this trip the children
used fresh cream to made butter.
They had to shake, shake, shake the cream until it
became delicious butter. The farmer`s wife also made
fresh bread that tasted wonderful with the butter.
What a treat!
The Kugani class will go on this field trip in October!
2017 BARN YARD DANCEOn Friday October 27, you and your family are invited to dress in costume and attend our
Barn Yard Dance. It will be great fun and will be held in the meeting rooms across from the
auditorium. We have encouraged a farm theme, but your child may wear anything as long as it
is not scary. With the exception of the Kukuru Class, there will be no school lunch provided
on this day, so please pack a lunch for your child.
Children may come to school dressed in costume when they arrive in the morning. For safety
reasons, it is very important that you stay with your child druing this event and that children
remain parent’s responsibility. If parents will not be able to attend the entire event, then the
parent and child must remain with his or her class teacher
