Hartlepool Maritime FestivalHartlepool Maritime Festival is nowestablished as one of the majorevents in the North of England'scalendar. The huge programme ofevents (most of which are free) willtake place on land, on the water andeven in the sky.The July festival is a celebration ofHartlepool's heritage and everythingmaritime. If you haven't been herebefore or for a number of years,prepare to be amazed by thechanges.

Stockton InternationalRiverside Festival Described as the 'UK's finest streetfestival', Stockton InternationalRiverside Festival (SIRF) brings theworld's most thrilling entertainers toour local stage in a riotous festival ofcolour and excitement, with deathdefying stunts and spiritedperformances. Also look out for theSIRF Fringe; the 'unofficial' elementshowcasing the best in local talent.

Evolution Music Festival,NewcastleGateshead Held on the NewcastleGatesheadquayside last bank holiday in May,this annual festival offers the chanceto experience some of the best rock,indie, reggae, country, punk, danceand other global sounds. Previousfestivals have featured Maximo Park,Calvin Harris, Pete Tong, GrooveArmada and The Waterboys.

Retail therapy can be found in the malls, in the highstreet and in the individual boutiques that can alwayscome up with that 'something different'.

The town centres play host to all the large high-streetchains. H&M, Topshop, Primark, House of Fraser andMarks and Spencer all have spacious stores to satisfy the most demanding shopping urge, and street performersand weekend music festivals regularly entertain thethrongs of shoppers.

The streets around this area are also home to many coffeebars, chic eateries and independent boutiques. InMiddlesbrough check out Triad or Pysche for the latest indesigner fashions.

Ahoy there! Tees Valley is famed for it's naval heritageattractions such as the multi award-winningHartlepool's Maritime Experience - a life sizedreconstruction of a Napoleonic Seaport and the oldestwarship afloat in the UK - the HMS Trincomalee.Nearby is the Wingfield Castle, a restored paddlesteamer and the Museum of Hartlepool, with amerman and sea monsters.

For tales of a different maritime pastime, visit theSaltburn Smugglers Heritage Centre, set in authenticfisherman's cottages, close to Saltburn's Pier and CliffLift. Tees Valley also forms part of the Captain CookCountry Tour, a 70 mile circular tour by car, followingthe early life of the famous explorer. The tour begins atthe Cook's birthplace in Middlesbrough at the CaptainCook Birthplace Museum, situated in the delightfulStewart Park.

Where trains were born! There's a whole world ofpioneering rail and industrial heritage in Tees Valleywhich can be enjoyed by all. Darlington is famed asthe birthplace of the railways; explore DarlingtonRailway Centre and Museum where you can seeStephenson's 'Locomotion' the engine that started theGolden Age of Steam. Don't miss David Mach's life-sized sculpture 'Train' - a tribute to the town's railheritage, which took over 181,000 bricks to construct.

Cameron’s BreweryHartlepool Originally established in 1854 byWilliam Waldon the brewery wastaken over by John Cameron in1872. Cameron grew the businessby buying out smaller breweriesbefore rising to fame as asuccessful entrepreneur andphilanthropist. Guided brewery tripsare available. All trips are roundedoff nicely with a visit to thehospitality lounge.

Surfers from around the world are drawn to our breaks, inparticular Saltburn and Tynemouth, which has played host tothe O'Neill British Surfing Championships. Those wishing tolearn will find our surf schools both enjoyable and friendly.Kite surfing has long been established in the region withNorthumberland having some stunning backdrops to enjoywhile skimming over the water.

A morning stroll along any of Tees Valley’s Heritage Coastlinebeaches or the Cleveland Way will revive and energise. With abackdrop of dramatic cliffs and awe inspiring views it is theperfect way to enjoy the outdoors.

Head to Kielder Forest in Northumberland for miles ofmountain bike trails that will leave you both breathless andexhilarated in equal measures. Or how about fine-tuning yourskills on the purpose-built skills "Loop" at Hamsterley Forest,County Durham, arguably the best mountain bike skills areain the country. A truly unique experience awaits you at ChrisBirbeck's International Rally School in Saltburn, Tees Valley,where you could soon find yourself power-sliding around thesame corners that World Rally Championship manufacturersuse to test their cars.

For those of you who delight in peppering your mates withpaint, there are several paintball operators located close toTees Valley, each offering their own distinctive combat games.

White water raftingHit the rapids all year round on thefully customisable white water riveron the Tees Barrage nearMiddlesbrough, where the fastflowing torrents will hurl you downthe course on an exhilarating,adrenalin-fuelled trip. Kayaking andcanoeing are also available.

SurfingCheck out the ‘waves’ at Saltburnwhere the Surf School caters for alllevels of ability. Reputed to be someof the best waves outside Cornwall,Saltburn attracts surfers from allover the world and with on site hirefor all your equipment there’s noexcuse not to tap into your inner‘surf dude’!

Kielder Water and Forest ParkKielder Water in Northumberland isthe largest man-made lake in Europeand is an area of breathtakingbeauty and serenity. Numerouswater sports are available on thelake, while the surrounding forestoffers mountain biking trails andwalks to suit all levels of ability.

Hadrian’s Wall

Snaking 73-miles from east to west, Hadrian's Wall markedthe northern frontier of the vast Roman Empire. Nowdesignated a World Heritage Site, it is one of the world'smost famous landmarks and is guaranteed to leave youthinking anything is possible. You will be amazed as you seethe wall rise up near vertical slopes to ensure an unbrokenline across northern England.

Visit the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum inMiddlesbrough to understand the scale of what the famousnavigator achieved. Head to Hartlepool's MaritimeExperience to witness a sailor's life in Victorian times andclimb aboard HMS Trincomalee, Britain's oldest floatingwarship.

The region was also home to George Stephenson, creator ofthe world's first railway. Visit Darlington Railway Museum tosee how much his invention changed the world.

If the pressure and stress of everyday life becomes toomuch, head to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne inNorthumberland to really understand what struggling toachieve actually means. Discover the story of how St. Aidanestablished a monastery here in 635AD and struggled tobring Christianity to the pagan population. The remains ofhis successor, St. Cuthbert, now rest in Durham Cathedral -described by travel writer Bill Bryson as "the best cathedralon Planet Earth." The cathedral, together with DurhamCastle, is the second World Heritage Site in our region andis an awe-inspiring example of human achievement.

Historical digsEvery August you can volunteer totake part in excavations atHadrian’s Wall. Pick up a brush andtrowel and you may be part of theteam which changes history.Previous discoveries include theVindolanda Roman writing tabletswhich told us more about Romanlife in Britain than any otherartefact.

Gisborough PrioryThe dramatic ruins of GisboroughPriory, with its remaining easterngable towering 97 foot high overthe market town of Guisborough.The gable gives a taste of what amasterpiece of decorated gothicarchitecture the Priory church musthave been. It is now a sanctuaryfrom busy market day shopping.There are open-air plays duringJuly.

Small island with big characterTake a trip to the Holy Island ofLindisfarne, cut off from themainland twice a day by the NorthSea. See where the famousLindisfarne Gospels were writtenand sample the island’s ownLindisfarne Mead, reputed to haveaphrodisiac qualities.

Kielder Water and Forest Park, Northumberland

North East England is regarded as the country's mosttranquil area. All over the region you'll find quiet, opencountryside, invigorating uplands and undiscoveredcoastline as welcome havens of peace and relaxation.

With mile upon mile of clean, golden sand and giant sanddunes you will always be able to claim a bit of ourcoastline for yourself. Head to Marsden Bay in SouthTyneside to get your toes wet whilst exploring the manyfascinating rock-pools or take a trip to Northumberland'sHeritage Coast to find some of the most beautiful andsecluded beaches in the UK. North East England hasmore castles than any other region in England, includingsome of the most beautiful.

The awe-inspiring Bamburgh Castle stands high atop sanddunes on the Northumberland Heritage Coast and wasrecently voted the second best view in Britain. RabyCastle in County Durham offers a complete contrast,surrounded by lush green fields which are home to one ofEngland's largest herds of wild red deer, whilst AlnwickCastle was the setting for Hogwarts in the Harry Pottermovies.

Our gardens and parks are natural choices in which tounwind. Crook Hall in County Durham, with its secretgarden rooms, and the Alnwick Garden, home to thepoison garden and one of the world's largest treehouses,are just two of a huge variety across the region.

National Trust Ormesby Hall A mid 18th century mansion, livedin by the Pennyman's for 370years, with a 17th century wing.Set in 270 acres of parkland, thehall has notably fine plasterwork.There is a restored Victoriankitchen and laundry, plusinteresting permanent modelrailway layouts. Attractive gardenswhich complement the 18thcentury working stables, a rareoasis in an urban area.

Crook Hall and GardensHidden corners in The ShakespeareGarden, a Secret Walled Gardenwith undisturbed views of DurhamCity and a planted maze to exploreat your leisure: Crook Hall providesa tapestry of colourful blooms andenchanting settings in which to loseyourself and relax.

Wild IslesHire a boat from Seahouses on theNorthumberland coast to visit theuninhabited Farne Islands. Spotpuffin, kittiwake, arctic andsandwich tern, which all breed herebetween April and August, as wellas a large colony of grey seals.

Tees Regatta, Stockton – MayTees Regatta has once again attracted well over 300entries, re-affirming its status as amongst the 6 biggestsingle day rowing events in the country. The event willbe raced over 850 metres on a 4 lane buoyed coursefrom the Tees Barrage upstream to the River TeesWatersports Centre, with the regatta venue providing agrandstand view of the finish line.
