    SHADE

Each manufacturer of teeth makes their own

shade guide. Use the shade guide of themanufacturer of the teeth you are going to use.

You obviously can't select teeth without the

shade. You will get the size from the mounting.

Forgetting to take the shade is probably thebiggest waste of time in denture construction

The patient ultimately decides the shade but you haveto guide them.

Select three shades and show each to the patient.Select a shade that goes well with the skin color and

the age of the patient. Don't show them the wholeshade guide.

Women usually want the lightest shade possible.

If they like their old denture teeth then match them.

    Write down the selection.

Remember to keep your chair light off the teeth, because this will change the color perception. Also

do not stare at the teeth.

Short glances will prevent the eyes from

    accommodating.

Your fluorescent bulbs are fine for matching colors

but daylight (if it's not cloudy or night time) isconsidered the best.

However if you consider that the patient is

going to spend most of the time underfluorescent light then maybe artificial light isthe best. Color matching for complete denturesis not a problem

Your occlusion rim occupies the space of the teeth. Theoccluso-gingival dimension is the small, medium, orlarge (S,M,L) on the card. There is also an extra-small(XS ).

In teeth set we have such numbers as 39, 42, 45, 48.The numbers refer to the mesio-distal diameter of themaxillary six anteriorsin millimeters. The larger thenumber the larger the anteriors. To get the matchingmandibularanteriorsuse the same number and letter

If you want to match the teeth of an old set of

dentures compare your selection to the widthof the maxillary central of the denture (ormeasure the six maxillary anteriors).

Apparently the mandibular teeth in the samemold are longer mesio-distally than the

    maxillary.

In practice, plastic teeth are used most often.

If you are making a single set of denturesopposing dentures with porcelain teeth, youcertainly could use porcelain.

Or you could make a complete set ofdentures with porcelain teeth.

You want to be aware that porcelain is veryabrasive. If you put porcelain opposite metal

anything then the metal will wear.

If you should set porcelain teeth against naturalteeth, then expect the natural teeth will be wornclear to the pulp

    Compensating curves are artificial curves

introduced into dentures in order to facilitatethe production of balanced occlusion.

They are artificial counter parts of the curveof spee and curve of Monson found in naturaldentition.

The neck of the lateral should be depressed inrelation to the central and canine.

The laterals will also be above the plane ofocclusion.

Maxillary laterals will have a mesial tilt.

Incisal curvature of the laterals must bewithin that of central.

    The maxillary 1st premolar:

The maxillary first premolar is placed with its long axis

perpendicular to the occlusal plane (verticallyupright). The buccal cusps are raised 0.5mm from theocclusal plane palatal cusp touches the occlusal plane.

    The maxillary 2nd premolar:

The long axis is perpendicular to the occlusal plane (parallel to the vertical axis). The buccal cusp and the

palatal cusp touches the occlusal plane.

    The maxillary 1st molar:

The long axis (viewed from side ) may slightlyincline mesially. When viewed from the front thetooth slopes buccally. The mesiobuccal cusp of

the first molar is raised 0.5 mm above theocclusal plane. The mesiopalatal cusp is incontact with the occlusal plane. The distobuccalcusp is raised about 1 mm above the occlusal

    The maxillary 2nd molar:

The long axis ( viewed from side, cervical area) mayslightly incline mesially. The mesiobuccal cusp ofthe 2nd molar is raised 1 mm above the occlusalplane. The distobuccal cusp 1.5 mm above the

occlusal plane. No cusp touches the occlusal plane.

When viewed from the front the tooth slopesbuccaly (more than the 1st molar).

The maxillary teeth viewed from the occlusal surfaceshould follow the following guidelines:

    - The distobuccal surface of the canine, the buccalsurfaces of the premolars and the mesiobuccalsurface of the 1st molar should follow a straightline. Buccal surfaces of the 2nd molar are slightly

inwards and are placed so that all buccal surfacesof the 1st and 2nd molars follow a straight line.Theposterior teeth should be placed so that the centralgrooves of the maxillary posterior teeth follow the

line of the crest of the mandibular residual ridge.

    mandibular posterior teeth:

The placement of the mandibular posterior teethdetermines how well the teeth occlude. Themandibular 1st molar is first placed in position

followed by the 2nd molar, and then the twobicuspids. After placing each mandibular tooth inthe correct position the incisal guide pin shouldbe checked to insure that it is in contact with the

Position of the mandibular 1st molar:

The mesibuccal cusp of the maxillary 1st molar fitsinto the buccal groove of the mandibular 1stmolar. This provides proper buccal overjet

    Position of the mandibular 2nd

molar:The mandibular 2nd molar is placed with the

mesiobuccal cusp fitting between the maxillary1st and 2nd molars and contact with their

The buccal cusp of the mandibular 1st premolar fitsbetween the maxillary canine and the 1st premolar.Usually this tooth is not placed until the anteriorand posterior teeth are placed. If there isntsufficient space for the placement of this tooth itmay be trimmed and made narrower to fit intothe available space rather than alter theplacement of anteriors
