Imagine this! You arrive at Aklan or Caclan airport. You are picked up by our privat

palms and then chill out completely as you sip your ice-cold drink.

A lot of foreign tourists make Boracay a yearly desnaon and because of this, ther

are many who chose to stay on and l ive here. Even the locals love this place.

Boracay can be found on the north-western p of Panayin Aklan, a province in the

Visayas islandsknown for its colourful A-Ahan fesval.

It boast of all the elements of a tropical heaven: crystal blue waters, powder white

sand, liberal doses of tropical palms and owering plants, and a healthy and diverse

marine life.

Boracay has three lile communies; Yapak in the north, Balabag in the middle, and

Manoc-manoc in the south. Hilly elevaons of up to 100 meters above sea level

The type of food and bars available on Boracay are as diverse as the naonalies of

its visitors and of course the locals. Filipino, French, Chinese, Australian, Belgian,

Boracay beach beckons for some serious swimming, or just wading by the shore.

For more acve vacaoners, windsurng, kite surng (new) and parasailing gears

There are over a dozen beaches dong Boracay island: White Beach, Diniwid, Bal-

inghai, Lapuz-lapuz, and Bulabog, among others.

Work on your tan, read a book, relax and have a massage. White Beach, probably

the most famous stretch in the country, features bright, ne sand and clear, shallowwaters.

Spend the last hours of the day at any of Boracays bars and discos. A good drink in

hand while dancing on the sand with a few brilliant reies. If this seems too rowdy

for your taste, take a stroll on the moonlit beach.

The course is full-me over 4 weeks. Course hours are: Monday, Tuesday and

Wednesday -10 am to 5 pm with one hour for lunch, Thursday and Friday -10 am t

1 pm followed by teaching your 1 hour class during the aernoon. Teaching praccestarts at 2 pm every Thursday and Friday. When you arrive, you will be given a de-

tailed course metable and your teaching pracce schedule.

The course starts at 9:30 am sharp. Please try to arrive at 9:15 am because you will

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS FOR THE PHILIPPINES

Are you already in the Philippines? If you are, ignore this secon.

Your passport

Make sure that your passport will have at least 6 months life le on it when you

travel to the Philippines. If it doesn't, you will have problems.

Entry visas

All students have to get a tourist visa before traveling to Philippines.

Ive been told that I dont need a visa to enter the Philippines, why do I have to

get one?

Whilst this is true for many countries, the limit on staying in the Philippines without

a visa is a maximum of 21 days (3 weeks). The EBC course runs for 4 weeks so youll

need to get one. For most people, obtaining an extended visa is not a problem.

Check with your countrys Philippine embassy or consulate to nd out what your

specic entry requirements are to cover the 28 day TESOL TEFL course period.

Before you send a deposit you must check with your nearest Philippine embassy or

consulate as to exactly what you need to do in order to apply for a tourist visa to

enter Philippines. In order to take the course you must have a tourist visa that will

allow you to stay in Philippines for 5 weeks.

WHAT KIND OF CLOTHES SHOULD I BRING?

There are no specic dress rules when you aend class, but we ask that you respect

your peers and the fact that you are a visitor in another country.

There are specic dress requirements for teaching pracce sessions that conformwith the local working and professional culture. You are expected to dress smart

casual as per the following guidelines.

Women

Shoulders should be covered (blouses with sleeves). No low-cut necklines or very

short skirts. Bare midris must not be visible, even when liing arms up. Open-toed

shoes are acceptable, but no hiking boots, sneakers/trainers or beach sandals.

Men

Long pants/trousers. NO jeans. Short or long-sleeved shirts with a collar (a e is not

required). Loafers or dress shoes are acceptable (no sandals, hiking boots or sneak-

ers/trainers). Long hair should be ed back.

EBC JOB SUPPORT ARRIVING: AIRPORT TO DOWNTOWN TRANSPORTATION

The nearest airport is Caclan. If you've opted for one of our accommodaon pack-

ages that includes airport pick up, just go to the arrival hall and look for someone

with your name on a display card.Aklan airport is about 50 km. from Boracay.

FERRY

Boracay is an island. It is separated from the mainland by a shallow channel about 2

km. wide. Ferries run between the mainland side at Caclanand Boracayon a regu-

lar basis. The shut down at night. The channel is shallow so there is no harbour. You

get on the ferries by gangplank from the beach so you may get your feet wet. The

crossing takes around 20 minutes.

TRICYCLE

Once you are on Boracay island transportaon is by tricycle (motorcycle + sidecar)

or minibus. There are lots of them. All you need to do is ag one down and tell the

driver where you want to go. The price varies by desnaon and it is customary to

give around a 10% p.

Along White Beach, there is a wide variety of gi shops and bouques along the

beach path and in D*Mall. In addion to the crowded stalls that you expect in Asia,

Boracay also has several high-end stores including clothing, art and household

items. Some places will permit you to haggle, others have a xed pricing system wit

price tags. Shop around as prices vary. Outside of White Beach, the shopping be-

comes sparse or non-existent.

While walking or laying on the sand, anywhere on Boracay, youll be approached to

buy a variety of items including jewelry made of shells, fresh fruit, ice cream, sun-

glasses or a nice massage.

COMMON-SENSE WARNING: Shopping areas in tourist areas aract pick-pockets,

so watch your purse or wallet.

sites. Ask your crew to organize a romanc BBQ on the beach with fresh grilled sea-

food. Cruise back at sunset to experience breath-taking views.

It is worth hiring motorbikes or scooters out to explore the island, as there are othe

beauful beaches on the other side of the island that are even beer for snorkellingthat will be completely deserted. Hire them for a couple of days and you should get

a discount. The roads are a bit dodgy, and some are sll being constructed, but its

good laugh and beer than plunking yourself on a patch of white sand and seeing

nothing. If you happen to be lying on the beach though denitely have a massage

and manicure.

Horse riding is a fun acvity in Boracay -get o the beaten path and experience na-

ve villages and scenery most other visitors dont get to see. All levels of experience

are catered to. Ask a tricycle to take you to the Boracay Horse Riding Stables.

Scuba diving

For those interested in Scuba Diving and Diving Packages, there are approximately

20 Dive Centres along White Sand beach; it is a good place to learn or to improve

your skills. Cost is typically $33 per dive which includes hire of all equipment.The

dive centres operate a cartel and have agreed standard prices amongst themselves

so prices will be the same at all centres. There are 25-30 dive sites within 10-15

minutes speed boat ride from the beach, suitable for beginners up to advanced lev-

el. Dives range from Angol Point (10m), through Crocodile Island (22-25m), a

straighorward wall dive, up to Yapak-a deep wall dive suitable for only the most

experienced divers due to strong currents, although there is the possibility of seeing

sharks and sngrays.

Boat tours

The best way to see the beauty of Boracay and it`s various beaches is by Paraw

(nave outrigger sailboat). You will be constantly asked if you want to take a boat

trip, as there are literally dozens of companies oering this service. It is beer to go

with a reputable and established group such as Allen Fun Tours (motorized banca boa

tours) or Red Pirates (para sailing) to ensure your safety and avoid being overcharged

Kiteboarding

Boracays Bulabog beach is known as the best kitesurf desnaon in Asia. The season

runs from November through to April with onshore winds varying between 12-30 kno

Skimboarding

Skimboarding in Boracay has been a new fun sport for kids and entertainment for old

for people for several years. It is a welcome new aracon and a pleasure to watch.

Skimboards are available for rent at several places along White Beach. But be sure to

hire an expert to teach you to do the skills.

Massage/Spa

Along White Beach you will be approached frequently by women oering to give you

massage, which they will do on the spot or on a towel laid out on the beach -your

choice.

A bit more organized, White Beach also has several Massage Staons: collecons o

masseurs that have their mats set up. The staons are typically open as long as there

are customers around but in general start to shut down just aer sunset.

For Swedish, Accupressure, Shiatsu etc, visit Abe (pronounced Abby) the blind masseu

There is a great outdoor massage staon in the beach area of Nigi Nigi Beach Resort,

where they have two tables set up. The booth is draped with curtains which they will

close if you wish, or leave open if you want to watch the people on the beach. Theyoer every massage in the book, and charge 500 Peso for one hour.

Things to see

White Beach-This is what most people are here for. Not only is it a lovely stretch of

powdery white sand against azure water, it s also the commercial center of the island

The long beach is divided into three secons, Staon 1, Staon 2, and Staon 3. The

widest beach front area is located at Staon 1 where prime hotels and resorts are loc

ed. A stretched grove of shady palm trees separates the beach from the line of restau

rants, cafes, bars, internet cafes, shops, bakeries, etc. There is lots of room to stretch

out on the beach with your sarong or you can rent a reclining chair from one of the vedors where they will be happy to keep you lled with food and drinks. Most people o

for the shade and tend to hang out under the palm trees.

Puka Beach-A quiet stretch of white sand along the northern p of the island, Puka

Beach is an image of what most people expect on a tropical island: white sand, azure

water, and relavely empty. This is where locals gather the small puka shells for some

the jewelry that is sold on the island so expect the sand to be more coarse than on

White Beach. The water tends to be a lile rougher on this side of the island but it is

much quieter. Similarly, there are fewer services --there are only a couple of restau-

rants, but you likely wont have a problem geng a cold drink or an ice cream as ther

are a few vendors that patrol the beach. The main road in Boracay terminates at Puka

Beach therefore youll be able to hire a tricycle to get there in less than 10-15 minute

from central White Beach. Make sure you arrange a pickup if it is a quiet day and no

tricycles are hanging around the beach. Most people experience Puka as one of their

sailboat or banca stops during a day trip. This is a good spot for a picnic, but be sure t

bring your trash home with you.

Baling Hai Beach-This is a quiet lile cove just north of Diniwid Beach, where you ca

enjoy swimming, snorkelling and dining in a relaxed, peaceful environment. There are

some fantasc views from the cli-top restaurant. Baling Hai is oen included as a sto

o on an island boat tour.

The Bat Cave-The Bat Cave, is home to small insecvorous bats (the larger fruit bats

roost in the trees on the hillside above Punta Bunga Beach), and locals will be more th

happy to accompany you there for a fee, or p. The cave is on the western-end of t

island and down several dirt roads. The guide will then take you on a short hike throu

the forest to the mouth of a cave, which drops down at a very steep angle. The mout

of the cave is liered with large boulders, and is extremely dicult to enter and walk

down. There is no visible path, no handrail, and the stones are extremely slippery wit

slime and bat guano, as well as extremely dangerous, since the cave is at such an ex-

treme angle. Also, the air inside the cave is very warm and humid, and in addion to t

amount of guano, is very dicult to breathe. Snakes live inside the cave. Cauon shou

be taken by those vising and entering the cave. There are bats in the cave, but downthe boom of it in the dark, and unless you have a ashlight or are there at dusk, you

wont see them. The ceiling of the cave is interesng, however, with mulple, small

stalactes. Just nearby, you can nd another cave, called crystal cave which has a lo

of stalactes and a hole on the opposite site of the entrance, from which you can wat

out to the sea if you dare to climb up to it. You will have to pay 50 Pesos entry-fee to

visit both caves on behalf of the family that owns the land, in addion to paying your

guide. Vising both caves can cost up to 2,500 Pesos for the guide, but this is the rich

tourist price, so try to bargain if you like.

Mount Luho-is the highest point of the island. Here you can see Boracays panorami

view.

What are the average housing and living expenses when working in the Philippines?

Most likely you will rent a room in an apartment or house with other teachers or with

the Philippines, and of course it depends on where you choose to live.

It is fair to say that TEFL teachers are quite well-paid by local standards in the Philip-

pines, which means they can aord a comfortable standard of living. A TEFL teacher c

expect to earn around 1,000 USD/month working 20 to 30 hours per week. While this

may not sound a lot by internaonal standards, it means you can live quite comfortab

in the Philippines.

How much money should I bring?

You should budget to spend between 500 Dollars (Spartan life) to 1,000 Dollars (good

life) for the period covering the 28 day course. If you want to stay and work in Boraca

or the rest of the Philippines you should budget between 1,000 to 2,000 Dollars to co

nding apartments and living expenses unl you get your rst pay-check.
