    I. GENERAL

    1. INTRODUCTION:

    Animal Husbandry is one of the rapidly expanding sectors, playing a significantrole in the rural economy by providing gainful employment to a large number ofsmall/marginal farmers and agricultural labourers and raising their economic status.The economic support programs like distribution of Milch animals, sheep and poultryunits have come to the rescue of the beneficiaries particularly scheduled castes,scheduled tribes and economically backward sections of the society.

    The activities of the Animal Husbandry epartment have been oriented towardshealth of livestock and increased production of milk, meat and eggs and to provideade!uate bullock power for agricultural operations. The schemes of the AnimalHusbandry epartment have been formulated in pursuance to the well"laid #ationalpolicies to improve the $ivestock production, to fight protein hunger and to improvenutritional standards of human population. Also provide technical support for themaintenance livestock and improvement of livestock breeds. Thus, Animal Husbandryepartment has been rendering the services to all the sections of people, in particularweaker sections of society and playing a vital role in the rural development by generat"ing additional source of income and employment, by protecting their valuable livestock.

    2. SALIENT FEATURES:

    %i& 'nder Animal Husbandry (ector the )overnment of *ndia have sanctioned+rime Minister-s ackage for rehabilitation of farmers in %0& suicide prone districts ofAndhra radesh with a view to provide supplementary avenues of income throughdiary farming since 1223"24 and inducted 35,146 high pedigreed milch animals andheifers from other (tates with the 728 subsidy.

    %ii& 9or the welfare of :$ families, the )overnment is implementing +asu

    ;ranthi athakam since 1223"24 and inducted ,57,ikas ?o@ana is being implemented in the (tate since 1224"25 with 228 entral Assistance during th9ive ?ear lan to achieve 58 growth rate inAnimal Husbandry (ector and inducted 635

    %v& *n order to guard sheep growers from losses, due to blue tongue disease, thesheep insurance programme has been taken up since 1220"1223 and being continued

    during 12"1.

    %vi&The )overnment of *ndia has sanctioned centrally sponsored $ivestock*nsurance (cheme. 'nder this scheme productive milch cattle will be insured on 728subsidy basis. *t is being implemented in eight districts of the (tate, during the year1220"23 and continued during 12"1.

    %vii& A rogramme of Mass >accination against 9oot C Mouth disease in animalswas implemented in hittoor, Ananthapur, =angareddy and Medak istricts with )D*assistance, to capitaliEe export market, during 1220"23 and continued during the year12"1. The rogramme is extended to all the istricts in the (tate during the year12"1 under A(A and =;>?.

    %viii& A rogramme of deworming the (heep belonging to shepherds of allcategories of farmers twice in a year on free of cost basis was taken up during the year,resulting in reduced early lamb mortality and improved growth rate due to increaseddisease resistance in sheep and continued during the year 12"1.

    3. DIRECTION AND ADMINISTRATION:

    r.M.>.=eddy, held the post of the irector of Animal Husbandry during the

    year 122"12, who lead the team to achieve the progress indicated in this report.

    Three Additional irectors assisted the irector of Animal Husbandry.

    *n addition to above, there are Two Boint irectors at the irectorate, assistingthe irector in the fields of Technical and (tatistics.

    The Boint irector %Administration& who is on deputation from the =evenueepartment is also assisting the irector in administrative matters, with oneAdministrative officer and Two Dffice Managers are working in the Head Dffice.

    The irector is also assisted by one eputy irectors %(tatistics& and one eputyirectors %Fpidemiology& at the irectorate. (ix Assistant irectors namely Technical,9arms, (tatistics, H=, lanning and oultry are assisting in technical matters. Dnehief Accounts Dfficer and an Assistant Accounts Dfficer are managing the accountsmatters.

    Apart from the above, at the head !uarters, two sub@ect matter specialists in thecadre of eputy irectors, one each for $ivestock 9arms and =inderpest Fradication(cheme is providing the technical guidance to the field staff and working as liaison

    officers between the field staff and irectorate in their fields of specialiEation. The

    eputy irector, ublicity and Fxtension at the head !uarters looking after all publicityand other extension related matters with one Assistant irector and two >eterinary

    Assistant (urgeons.

    %11& Boint irectors who are i/c of the istrict Administration are maderesponsible for proper coordination, implementation of schemes and administration ofAnimal Husbandry activities in the %1eterinary :iological=esearch *nstitute, Hyderabad. Dne eputy irector is in charge of one mini >:=*,which is functioning at (amalkot, Fast )odavari district.

    At the =evenue ivisional level, %42& Assistant irectors are made responsiblefor the proper implementation of all Animal Husbandry activities in their respectivedivisions including administration.

    be supplied with essential needs like Microscopes, Autoclaves, incubators and chemical

    proposed to be made made available at institution level to facilitate the farmer to have

    which are in dilapidated conditions need to be renovated for which the budget is being

    24.5 $akhs was allocated towards renovation and construction of 14 hospital

    buildings, and during the year 12"1 an amount of =s. 7.42 lakhs is allocated to

    cover anara@a breeding stock

    with low input technology and supply the chicks to weaker sections .The staff working in the

    livestock farm Mamnoor farm Iarangal were also overseeing the pro@ect. #ow the entire farm

    with staff was transferred to (> >eterinary 'niversity except poultry farm. *n order to

    maintain the farm, the staff in various categories along with other logistics is re!uired. An

    amount of =s .5< $akhs was allocated during 122". uring 12"1 an amount of =s. 0.02

    An amount of =s.7537.3 $akhs has been proposed for construction and

    strengthening of 006 >eterinary institutions in place of dilapidated and damaged

    buildings in the (tate in a span of < years i.e., from 1224"25 to 122" under =*9scheme with financial assistance from #A:A=. (o far all the pro@ects were grounded

    and at various stages of completion. *n order to complete all the pro@ects an amount of

    =s.1202.22 $akhs is allocated for the year 12"1.

    impart refreshing training courses to in service candidates in addition to the primary

    mandate.

    46 NATIONAL CONTROL "ROGRAMME ON "ESTE DES "ETITS IN

    RUMINANTS >""R6este es etits =uminants %=& is an acute, contagious viral disease of small

    ruminants. The (heep and goat rearing in the state is in the hands of small and marginal

    farmers and landless labour. This disease causes severe economic losses to the sheep

    and goats rearing community, as the mortality and morbidity of sheep and goat with

    this disease is very high.

    *t is very much essential to prevent and control the disease in the state. The

    control of = disease will help in prevention of economic losses to the farmers and

    also helps in export of meat and meat products to other countries. uring the year 12"

    The ob@ective of the scheme is to establish silage making unit to preserve surplus

    fodder for feeding during lean periods. The salient feature of the scheme is that during

    the period of surplus availability of green fodder, farmers are encouraged to take up

    silage making to make the !uality fodder available during lean %shortage& period of

    fodder. 228 grant in aid is given by entral )overnment for establishment of silage

    making unit J =s. .27 lakhs. uring the year 12"1, an amount of =s. 73.37 lakhs

    was allocated for establishment of 77 units.

    The main ob@ective of the scheme is to improve the degraded grasslands bygrowing introducing suitable grass, legumes and fodder trees %by silvipasteur etc&. The

    erosion presently taking place in the lands will be minimiEed and the biomass produced

    will help to minimiEe the gap between availability and re!uirement of fodder. The

    forage obtained from the lands will be utiliEed as reserves by establishing fodder banks

    and depots. The assistance under the scheme will be provided as 228 central
