Ethnicity

Confidentiality

JAR Team, RAID

‘Other’ does not necessarily signify an ethnic background. It may either indicate that a respondent is not willing to select from the given ethnicity categories, or that his/her ethnic background is not among the options provided.

In order to maintain respondents’ confidentiality, respondent numbers and percentages have been suppressed (signified by *) where one of the ethnicity groups returned a sample of 10 or less. However, where two or more groups returned a sample of 10 or less, numbers and percentages are shown as it would be impossible to calculate the true figures of the suppressed groups from the given data.

Questions 10-14Note that from Block 3 onwards, the response for the above questions have been changed from selecting a number between 0 and 10 (0=‘it’s not easy for me to have my say’ and 10=‘it’s very easy for me to havemy say’) to selecting one option from four options (very easy, quite easy, not easy and difficult). This means that it is not valid to compare analysis of Blocks 1 and 2 responses for these questions with Blocks 3 and onwards. Therefore, analysis for these questions will exclude responses from Blocks 1 and 2 in reports from Block 3 onwards.

TellUs Questionnaire

Notes

Analysis method

Definitions:Blue question: This applies to Questions 2-9 and can be viewed as the 'initial question'. 'Blue' refers to the colour of text as the question appears in the questionnaire. The initial question measures the attitudes and behaviour of the respondents on a three point qualitative scale. In questions 8 and 9, the respondents can alternatively state that they do not know the area well enough to give an informed answer. For each blue question, respondents are required to give exactly one response.

Red question: This applies to Questions 2-9 and can be viewed as the 'follow-up options'. 'Red' refers to the colour of text as the question appears in the questionnaire. There are five follow-up options, representing five typical factors that contribute to the response given to the initial question. The respondent can select none, one or multiple responses.

Area ChartsFour charts are displayed here. The first chart shows the percentage of responses in each of the three (or four for questions 8-9) categories of the blue question. The next three charts show the number of responses to each follow-up option. Note that as a respondent can select none or any number of options, the sum of the response numbers for the five options may exceed the number of respondents.

Area comparison with 'National' chartsA page with six bar charts is displayed for each of the three blue question options. Each chart is arranged in three groups; showing the overall percentage ('all') alongside the percentage applying to the boys and that applying to the girls. In all cases, area data are paired with 'National' data (see the note on 'National' in health warning). The upper-left chart shows the percentage of respondents who selected the given blue option. The remaining five charts show response rates for each of the five red options available.

Health warning

NationalThe term 'National' in this report refers to the aggregate figures of all the local areas surveyed to the present date. As this selection of local areas may not be representative of the population, caution must be exercised when inferring from the analysis.

'Red' question optionsResponses to the red questions are analysed as if the five responses are separate and independent ‘yes or no’ questions. A ‘yes’ response would imply that the child recognises this to be a noteworthy factor. Furthermore, a respondent may deem one factor more important than another factor, but as the relative importance is not recorded, each response is assumed to be equally weighted (i.e. of equal importance).
