The Rabbi SpeaksAs I reflect on our Pursuit of Harmony

program with Michael Ochs and Alaa Alshaham, I cannot help but smile. Our time with these amazing musicians and friends was inspiring. They taught us to not think about people as “others,” but to recognize that each one of us is a human being and that if we look past all of the factors that make us different, we can see our commonalities and become friends. The important part is to take down those

barriers and find out who each other really is inside. Michael and Alaa shared many stories, pictures, videos, and songs with us, but there is one that gave me chills each time I heard it; “Stones,” a song written from the viewpoint of a stone. The lyrics are:

I used to be stardust/then came the big bang/and I turned to bedrock, then mountains, and sand/chiseled and broken/shaped by a man/turned into weapons in his hands/Chorus: too many stones/too many stones have been thrown/A piece of a bridge/a brick in the wall/I can be anything at all/the tip of an arrow/the very first wheel/I held the command-ments and always will/ChorusSo lay me down/build a path/walk on me together/let me be your common ground/hold on to each other/lay me down ChorusA piece of a bridge/a brick in the wall/I can be anything at all

This moving piece includes lyrics that discuss how stones could be used to build a house or tear down a wall.

As you are reading this, I will be tearing down walls and build-ing up homes in Israel as I engage in an Israel Rabbinic Leadership Seminar hosted by both the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR). The seminar aims to provide critical insight into the strategic, political and cultural situation of Israel and its people today. We will have in-depth site visits, expert briefings by leading scholars and analysts, and opportunities for discussion and debate with Israelis of diverse backgrounds and views as we meet with Israel’s most senior leadership, prominent journalists, intellectuals, social and economic entrepreneurs, and representatives of the Palestinian Authority leadership. Each day has a theme for us to explore which run from economic and social aspects of the country to discus-sions on peace prospects; culture to democracy; strengthening the Diaspora’s connection to Israel to critically exploring the difficult challenges in Jerusalem. Each day allows us to tear down walls and build a foundation of peace, hope, and love.

I cannot be more excited to go to Israel. I can expand my un-derstanding of Israel as a nation from a different perspective as well as reconnect with friends and my former home. Israel is a com-plicated place with a rocky past, but it is a place near and dear to my heart. By engaging in the difficult conversations, I develop my relationships with the state, the country, the people, and its history more and more.

I would love for you to “follow me” on my journey by checking up on my Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat accounts. I will be trying to keep as many notes and taking as many pictures as possible so I can share my incredible experience with y’all.

May we lay down the stones that are thrown to build a path, walk together, and use that as common ground.

B’shalom M’Yisrael — With peace from Israel,

Rabbi Marina Yergin

The Ethical Tradition of Rabbinic Judaism

Join us for one, a few, or all sessions.

The ethical teachings of the rabbis are timeless lessons on the importance of Torah, the history of the Jewish people, and the ways we can each be better people.

Pirkei Avot: How Torah Shapes Our LivesMarch 15, 22, & 29

7:00-8:30 pm – with Rabbi Marina Yergin

Pirkei Avot, the Ethics of the Fathers, is a Mishnaic tractate* full of wise words spoken by rabbis. These sayings have been studied rigorously for hundreds of years as timeless lessons on the importance of Torah, the history of the Jewish people, and the ways we can each be better people. Through this 3 session course, we will engage in a conversation with the rabbis on the page and those around us to discover how the Torah affects us today.

*A Mishnaic tractate is a section of the Mishnah, the major written redaction of Jewish oral traditions.

Session 1: What is Pirkei Avot and what are we supposed to do with Torah?

Session 2: How do we teach and study Torah?

Session 3: How does Torah shape us?

We would very much love for you to join us at the Temple and help bake. If you would prefer to bake your favorite recipe at home in your own kitchen, it would also be greatly appreciated. We always like to add something special to our platters. Please contact Iris Lieberman at 699-8661 or [email protected] whether you would like to join us or bake at home. Thanks in advance for helping fill our freezer with homemade sweets for our Onegs.

RChesed v’Emet

ShabbatonSaturday, March 19 at 12:30 pm

The Chesed v’Emet Shabbaton previously scheduled for January has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 19 at 12:30 pm. Please join us if you would like to help with our new Caring Community which will help with coordinating meals for a congregant in need during a crisis, coordinate personal ‘touches’ to the homebound, just being a friendly face or voice to someone who may not have any other con-nection to our Temple community. This is your opportunity to show what we at Temple Beth-El are all about: Audacious Hospitality. We invite you to attend a special Chesed v’Emet Shabbaton, on March 19. We will begin after Shabbat Morn-ing Worship with lunch, a discussion of what we hope to accomplish, and provide training on working with others in their time of need by our congregant, Mindi Silver-Weiss, (MSW with extensive experience in elder care). Please RVSP by Tuesday, March 15, even if you had done so before at http://tinyurl.com/ TBE-Chesed. This is your opportunity to provide caring, tenderness and constancy to fellow con-gregants who may need a friend.

Keep the Temple InformedWe rely on our Temple members, their friends and family to let us know when someone is hospitalized or suffering any illness or bereavement, or would just enjoy a call or visit from the clergy or a member of the congregation. The clergy would also like to hear good news, such as celebrating a birth or other simchah. Since the privacy laws have changed, local hospitals no longer

release information when we ask for a list of Jewish patients. In order to better serve

the congregation, please share this information with our clergy by calling Iris Berman-Smith at 733-9135, ext. 106.

The patient or immediate family is often not able to make this call, so please let us hear from you.

The Sacred Table: Creating a Jewish Food Ethic

What do ethics, community, and spirituality have to do with food and food production? The Sacred Table inspires us to shape our own personal approach to food through the Reform Jewish lenses of ritual and ethics.

“Matzah, Hametz, Manna: Biblical Foods Teach Us What to Eat Everyday”

As we prepare for Passover, we will reflect on the Israelites’ journey out of slavery into freedom. Closely studying the Biblical narrative and the later commentaries, Rabbi Zamore will teach us about the three foods — matzah, hametz and manna — that trace our journey. Our culminating discussion will shed light on our complicated, modern food choices.

Hadassah Shabbat 2016

The community is invited to join the San Antonio Chapter of Hadassah as it celebrates its annual Hadassah Shabbat at Congregation Agudas Achim on Friday, March 11, at 6:15 pm. This year’s theme is Hadassah, The Power of Women Who Do.

If you would like to participate in our worship

service by reading Torah or by offering the D’var Torah please contact Cantor Berlin

at [email protected].

If you’ve never written a D’var Torah (or if you have) we will give you resources

and guide you along the way.

Nominating CommitteeAt our upcoming May 31 annual meeting, the congregation will be presented with

a slate of Board candidates recommended by the Nominating Committee and approved by the Board. Our Temple President, Joshua Sutin, asked me to chair the Nominating Committee this year and we welcome input from Temple members regarding potential Board candidates.

Our Board of Trustees is comprised of a diverse group of individuals who are committed to Temple Beth-El and the wider Jewish community. They have demonstrated leadership skills in our Temple committees and/or other organizations, and are committed to strengthening our congregation.

We encourage you to suggest a candidate to the Nominating Committee. Some qualities of a potential candidate to consider are:

• Commitment to Temple Beth-El• Worship• Committee/Volunteer Participation• Jewish Learning• Commitment to the Greater Jewish and San Antonio Communities• Volunteerism• Civic Activities• Professional/Business Activities• Other Board Participation/Leadership Roles• Exemplary Personal Characteristics• Strong Leadership Ability• Ability to Build Community within Temple• Strategic Vision• Willingness to Participate in Fundraising Activities Of course these qualities and characteristics are not all encompassing, but we

think it helps to paint a picture of the candidates we’re looking to attract. The nominating committee will be meeting this month. We’re asking that you

submit nominations no later than March 15. You can submit your nominations by sending an email to [email protected]. Please include the candidates name and some reasons why you feel he or she would be a good Board Member.

Thanks for your support as we move forward! M.H. Levine Nominating Committee Chair
