A Message of Faith

“You have stayed long enough in this place, God said. Time to go forward. Turn your face to the future. Believe that you can cross this sea and survive. Inside you is a Moses; within you Miriam dances, unafraid. Lift up your voice and sing a new song.”

(from Mishkan Hanefesh: Machzor for the Days of Awe, based on Deut. 1:6-7)

The sea has parted and we are walking on dry land, walls of water on both sides. Temple Israel is collectively lifting one toe-heel step after another towards its promised land. Sometimes our steps feel graceful and confident; at other times, we feel a little klutzy. With each stride, though, we join hands, envisioning that next home, that promised land, each of us a Miriam or Moses, each of us a statement of “Hinenu — We are here!”

Hinenu is Temple Israel’s theme for the holidays, as well a statement of our identity. In whatever physical location before we move into our newly renovated home at 3100 East Broad Street — Hinenu! In whatever sacred space of personal acceptance or resistance to changes we may experience in this exceptional moment in our synagogue’s history — Hinenu! In whatever human configuration of seekers and builders and dreamers — Hinenu! And this year more than ever, your presence at the High Holidays will make the crucial statement of “Hinenu — We are here.” Much will be familiar to you on these holy days, especially if you’ve joined us before. But there will be some significant changes too, including: We will be at the JCC for all holidays, starting with

S’lichot (the “pre-game,” the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah) and bookending with Sukkot (with special guest band, Road to Eden) and Simchat Torah (when we’ll celebrate our Kindergarteners and new first graders with Consecration).

We will pray together in ONE service, combining our

Sanctuary and Alternative Services into one engaging, accessible, and uplifting spiritual experience.

There will be many offerings for our young people,

including our Children’s Service (for our littlest friends and their parents), our Family Service (back by popular demand, led by Or Mars), and a brand new Teen Service (led by Education Director Beata Abraham and teen leaders Mindy Agranoff, Jami Garfinkel and Toby Mars).

We will also be cognizant that our space will not be “the

same” as we’ve known it to be for all these years. Rest assured, Cantor Moses and I will strive to create a warm and familiar spiritual atmosphere, remaining firm in our commitment to make you feel at home, while also holding tight to the rabbinic wisdom that prayer should never be exactly the same from one time to the next.

Shanah Tovah — I feel blessed and excited to spend these holy days with you, and to proudly walk beside you on this incredible journey. Hinenu!

Billy Crystal’s “700 Sundays” is the hit monologue that first appeared on Broadway in 2004. A love letter to the past, it is set around Billy’s childhood home in Long Beach, NY, and focuses on his father, Jack Crystal, who died when Billy was just 15 years old. The title of the show, “700 Sundays”, refers to approximately how many Sundays Billy spent with his father.

All Are Welcome

Dear Temple Israel Family,

This past year has been filled with blessings and bittersweet moments for us as a congregation. In the span of the last 12 months, we have listed our building, identified a new location, bought a new building, conducted a new Senior Rabbi Search and chose a new rabbi, said goodbye in tribute to our former and beloved Rabbi Zinkow, sold a building that we loved for almost 60 years, and then packed and moved within a span of six weeks to our temporary locations. I think many are due for a vacation! We now approach the New Year, a time in which we reflect on the year that was and make plans for the New Year to come — spiritually, purposefully, with a dash of practicality.

Now is the time to grow our relationships with each and shape our own special brand of Tikkun Olam. And it bears repeating: this doesn’t happen without you. This happens because of you. Communication will be key for our journey together. Please let us know if you are not hearing from us. Whether it is notices on life cycle events, or upcoming news about ride sharing to services or just the weekly emails about our ongoing small gatherings. And please let us know whether you are receiving the weekly email. These communications are the best way for us to stay connected to each other. Please attend Shabbat services, attend special events or volunteer for opportunities to serve our community. Please join us!

We know our temporary locations may cause questions around the need for ongoing financial commitments to our operations. The lack of a building does not eliminate operational expenses, personnel costs or the costs of educating our youth. The sale of the building allows us to pay off the mortgage on our new building and pay off the Temple Israel Foundation loan for both principal and interest. This loan allowed us to stay in operation until we sold our building. The net proceeds of the sale of our building will be used to renovate our new location. A sincere thank you to those of you that have submitted your commitment form; if you have not had a chance, please think about completing your ongoing commitment to affiliate with Temple Israel. If you need a form, let us know by emailing [email protected]. Lastly, as we get ready to welcome the year 5778, I ask you to reflect on the year that was, with fondness and just a tiny tear, but look forward to being part of one of the most important times in our 172 year old history as Temple Israel. Let’s move forward together. L’Shana Tova U’Metukah! Wishing you and yours a sweet New Year filled with happiness, health, peace and joy! Patti Shorr, Temple Israel President

HHD Information

There are many names for a “Cantor.” Two Hebrew words and phrases that come to mind are “Hazzan,” stemming from the root word, “hazon,” meaning vision, while the other popular name for a prayer leader is a “shaliach tzibbor,” meaning a “messenger of the congregation.” It is a deep honor, privilege and great responsibility to fulfill these multiple roles

for our community. These roles, one of “Cantor,” stemming from the Latin, “cantara,” meaning “to sing,” as well as sharing our vision as a “Hazzan,” and being a “shaliach tzibbor,” carrying all our communal prayers of gratitude and petition to the Divine is a lofty task. I do this with great humility, immense joy, and a bit of trepidation each time I arrive on the Bima. During the High Holy Days, when we stand before God in all of our truth and fragility, our emotions and fears are heightened. As the messenger of our community, I relish in the groundedness and security that the wisdom of our liturgy provides, giving me a sense of comfort chanting these precious words of our tradition. Even as the Cantor, I too, can be vulnerable asking for compassion and forgiveness from God, acknowledging my faults and imperfections making me not separate from you, but very much a part of our oneness. So it is with a deep “kavannah,” a focused intention — that I chant the words of the “Hineni” prayer, the prayer that states, “Here I am, Here I Stand.” I stand not alone, but with you. We recall that the name for this prayer is taken from the passage in the Torah from the story of the Binding of Isaac which we find in Rosh Hashana’s Torah Reading. A translation of the first paragraph of this prayer is as follows: “Here I Stand, impoverished in merit, trembling in the presence of the One who hears the prayers of Israel. Even though I am unfit and unworthy for the task, I come to represent Your people Israel and plead on their behalf. Therefore, gracious and merciful Adonai, awe-inspiring God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah I pray that I might successfully seek compassion for myself and those who send me.” The “Machzor Lev Shalom,” a beautiful High Holy Day book published by the Rabbinical Assembly offers commentary on the great responsibility of the one who chants this prayer aloud for the congregation. It states, “The responsibility of

the leader in the High Holy Days services is especially weighty, for unlike Shabbat and festival prayers, the prayers of these days, occurring as they do only once a year, are less familiar to the congregation. In the Middle Ages, when most of the congregation did not possess a prayerbook, leading the congregation in prayer was an even a weightier task. Thus, there developed the tradition of the leader privately praying that the service might be conducted properly, that the people be inspired and that God be moved by the pleas of the congregation.” The Hineni prayer was composed in the 16th century and its author is unknown. Originally the prayer was recited silently by the leader, and even today when it has become a public statement in musical form, some portion of it is recited meditatively and quietly. So it is my intention to ask for your blessing, to know that even though I may stand apart up on the Bima, I truly am “Hineni,” here, standing with you, beside you carrying our vision, our prayers, and our message for healing, hope and peace. Together we stand in prayer filled music, and music filled prayer. L’Shana tova u’metukah! A joyful and sweet new year,

Cantor Bat-Ami Moses

The film, directed by Doug Passon, is the inspirational journey of Jewish musician, Dan Nichols, who took his show on the road for the Jewish festival of Sukkot in October 2011. Dan and his incredible band Eighteen loaded into an RV and wandered through the Deep South. Each day of Sukkot brought a new town, a unique celebration, and uplifting, sometimes heartbreaking Sukkot stories.
