From the Rabbi...
Light in the Darkness
Chanukah is best known as the holiday in which the miracle of oil occurred. The Jews were finally able to take back the Temple from the Assyrian Greeks. As they were cleaning up they found one container of purified oil that was used to light the Ner Tamid – the eternal light. There was enough oil to last one day, but it would take eight days to get new oil. The miracle occurred when the oil lasted for eight days. This is a fun story to tell the children. But today, there are other important messages that Chanukah can give us.
Chanukah is a story of religious freedom. Despite the anti-Semitic acts of the Assyrian Greeks, the Jews held fast to their beliefs. The dreidel symbolizes the strength and creativity the Jews used to survive. The Assyrian Greeks made it illegal for Jews to study Torah but that didn’t stop them. Someone kept guard outside while the Jews continued to teach their children Torah. When they saw Assyrian Greek soldiers coming, they quickly hid their books and took out their dreidels, showing the soldiers that they were just playing games.
It is also a reminder that just as we were persecuted, we need to be continually aware of other groups who are persecuted. We read in the Torah, “You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” (Ex. 22:20) “You shall not oppress a stranger, for you know the feelings of the stranger, having yourselves been strangers in the land of Egypt.” (Ex. 23:9) As we witness an increase in outward hatred and prejudice in our country, it is our obligation not only to look out for ourselves but to also support others. Also remember, prejudice against other groups always eventually comes back against the Jews.
Remember that Chanukah is called the Festival of Lights. It is a reminder that in the darkest days of the year -- physically, spiritually, and emotionally -- we can find ways to light up that darkness and not feel alone. Each night of Chanukah, as we light the Chanukah Menorah, take a moment to mention something that is positive in your life. And pledge to take action when needed to hold up the rights of all.
Rabbi Michele Brand Medwin, D.Min.

Think of Temple Sholom, once a month, when your checkbook is out for other matters. Then, if you can, send us a small love donation, for no purpose other than to keep us here. Some months you might send $18 (hence the Chai) , some months less. Even what seems to be a small amount adds up. Take this opportunity to share in the good feeling of supporting our temple.
