Four terrific terroir-driven, value-priced wines from the Salento Peninsula. The grape varieties represented, all cultivated in

Puglia for generations, have come to exhibit characteristics that reflect the warm climate and fertile soils of their place.

There is not a barrel stave to be found in this immaculate Mandurian cellar. 100% ICEA-certified organically-grown fruit is

vinified and aged in stainless steel. Many of the estate's Primitivo vines are bush-trained and up to 60 years old.

Podere Casanova is a 13-acre farm in the Val di Chiana. Owner Massimo Carpini purchased the land a decade ago after

returning to Tuscany from years spent working in France. With meticulous management of vineyard and cellar Massimo is

able to coax stunning purity and great varietal character from his Sangiovese.

I Trulli and Vino owner Nicola Marzovilla introduces the first-ever vintage of Massoferrato Rosso, a wine made from

Sangiovese grown on his family's estate in the Colli Fiorentini. The wine is vinified in steel and aged in Slavonian botti

Not long ago Alfonso Soranzo set aside the horn he had trained to play since childhood to pick up shovel and get to work

wines of great character using biodynamic principles in the vineyard and little intervention in the cellar .

Riccardo Ricci Curbastro carries on his family's tradition of making Franciacorta in a bracingly dry style that is sure to

pique your palate. The farm has 25 hectares under vine near the village of Capriolo. All three wines see some time in

barrique during their first fermentation and spend up to 48 months on the lees during the second.

Gian Luigi Orsolani is his family's fourth-generation to commit to the local Erbaluce, a variety known for its luscious acidity

and grass-and-melon perfume. Erbaluce's charms can be expressed with equal appeal as a rich, honeyed passito, a dry

white or a brut Metodo Classico. Orsolani is one of few who produce the rare nebbiolo-based Carema.

LUCA FERRARIS Piemonte

The Motta family has been producing wines in Montegrosso since 1794. Graziano, the current winemaking Motta, still

insists on long ageing in large casks. On a recent visit we tasted 2004 Barbera maturing in old Slavonian oak. At six-years-

old the wine had remarkable freshness and the kind of aromatic character found in wines many times the price.

Luca Ferraris has dedicated one of his most promising vineyard sites to the production of Ruchè, a variety grown for

generations on the slopes of the Basso Monferrato in eastern Piemonte. The Bric d'Bianc is a bold statement to those

outside of Castagnole Monferrato that Ruchè merits treatment akin to Nebbiolo and Barbera. The proof is in the bottle.
