It has been a wonderfully SETTLED start to 2019 and a big congratulations to the students on their focus and great behaviour. Our new kindergarten and preschool students have settled in well and are learning the routines of school. This year, I have really appreciated our parents making a conscious effort to allow their children time to settle into new classes and develop their own positive relationships without intervening. Our children will find their way and develop stronger social skills as a result. We greatly appreciate your support. School Uniform Thank you to all of the families whom have worked to ensure their child is in correct school uniform. Please note….. Socks need to be white for girls and either grey or white for boys. Black socks or socks with brands are NOT part of our uniform. Only the green school hat or cap (or a bottle green hat) may be worn. Caps with logos are not acceptable and should be weekend wear only. Jackets school jackets or bottle green jackets (available from Lowes, Best and Less, Big W or K-Mart) are accepted. Buying from the school uniform shop ensures your child is in the correct uniform. Their products are excellent quality. The store is run by the P&C and any profits are returned to the school to benefit your child. Please see the canteen for access to uniforms. Caps are available at the school canteen for $9. If you are having trouble buying the school uniform, please see the lovely ladies in the office for a ‘School Assistance’ form. We can set up a payment plan or help out with some of the cost. Gates To ensure all our children are safe, we close our gates throughout the day. The gates will be locked in the morning straight after morning assembly (about 9:25am) and opened again at 3:10pm. We have been having on-going issues with some high school students in the afternoon interrupting lessons and being rude and a nuisance which is the reason for the later afternoon opening. If you wish to come into the school earlier, please enter via the front office. Also a reminder please refrain from smoking outside the gates. It is for the wellbeing of our students and parents and I would appreciate if you do not smoke within 20 metres of any gate in the morning and afternoon. Well done to the students who visited me with quality work or displaying our school connecting behaviours. It is wonderful to have dedicated and caring students in our school.

Scripture

Scripture (SRE) and Ethics (SEE) classes will again be offered at our school during 2019. Lessons will begin on Thursday 21st February from 12.45 pm - 1.15 pm. Parents/caregivers in NSW public schools have the right to have their children receive instruction in their preferred religious persuasion, where authorised teachers of that persuasion are available. Lessons are run by authorised volunteers of approved religious persuasions. Our school has a very dedicated team of Scripture and Ethics volunteers joining us at TEPS this year and are very lucky to have their continued time and support. Our records indicate that some families have not provided their religious persuasion upon enrolment. Please complete the note sent home last Friday, or contact the front office to nominate the special religious education program you wish your child to attend. Parental permission for students attending non-Scripture or Ethics must be received in writing each year. Please note, once Scripture and Ethics classes have been established it is very disruptive to change their composition on a week-by-week basis. If you wish to request a change of classes during the year a review may take place at the beginning of Semester 2. Have a wonderful fortnight TEPS Nicole Heazlewood Acting Principal

If you have any questions please see our office staff or your child’s class teacher. Kind Regards, Donna Andrews Organising Teacher

Deputy Principal’s Report

My name is Mrs Karen Wardlaw and I am so pleased to be in the relieving role of Deputy Principal at The Entrance Public School for Term 1, 2019. I have been made very welcome by the wonderful staff and students and am so excited to be part of the TEPS team! I have been very impressed by the calm and settled start to the year by all students and very impressed by the way our new enrolling students have settled in to our school. This is helped by the kind and friendly students in their classes who have made them feel welcome and part of the TEPS community. This is most certainly my experience too, as a new member of TEPS. I am enjoying getting to know our students and families and look forward to engaging with as many families as possible in Term 1. I have been teaching for nearly 25 years and have enjoyed working in a wide variety of school settings. Every school is unique and special and this is true of The Entrance Public School. I am particularly inspired by the hard working teachers who put heart and soul into not just educating but supporting and nurturing the young people in our care, and in the smiling faces of our students, who show resilience, persistence and effort in their learning. Well done, TEPS, and thank you for having me at your school. Karen Wardlaw Relieving Deputy Principal

Kindergarten News Welcome everyone to Kinder. We are off to an outstanding start. You should be very proud of how your children have settled in to school life. They are developing their classroom routines, making new friends and have already started their learning journey. Here are a few lunchbox tips to make their days even easier:

Be mindful of the amount of food you pack for them. They only have 10 minutes to eat their recess and lunch but some battle through a mountain of food when they’d prefer to be playing.

Pack a small, fresh piece of fruit or vegetable for their fruit break. They aren’t allowed the packaged puree snacks at

this time.

Snip a small piece off the corner of packets of chips, biscuits, muesli bars, noodles etc with scissors before packing in their lunchbox. They can be really hard to pull open and this gives them a starting point.

Yoghurts or fruit purees in the pouches with the screw top lids are also hard for some to open. Snap the seal and then retighten.

Upcoming Events: School photos are coming up on the 7th and 8th March. Money envelopes have been sent home and we will let you know which

one of these days our class photos will be when the timetable has been decided. Remember if you have any problems or concerns please see your classroom teacher. Stephanie Ainslie, Nicole Crottey & Nikki Wilson

Stage 1 News Welcome to Stage One

Congratulations to all of the amazing children who have done such a fabulous job settling into their new classes. I have popped into all of the rooms and it has been wonderful to see the children so happy and engaged in their learning! Communication

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child your first port of call is your child’s class teacher. If the matter is not resolved or you would like further clarification you can arrange to speak with the Stage One Assistant Principal – Donna Andrews. Please phone the office or send in a note and we can organise a mutually convenient time. Just a friendly reminder that morning assemblies are not an appropriate time to have a chat or a meeting with your child’s teacher. Home Reading

Home Reading began last week and I am super impressed to see so many children eager to read each night. Remember that home reading should be easy to build confidence and fluency. Children will bring home a book that is 1-2 levels below their class level. Please sign the Home Reading Register once per day and send to school after 25 nights when an award is reached.

Finally, I would like to welcome all of the new families who have joined our TEPS team!

Have a wonderful week! Donna Andrews Stage 1 Assistant Principal

Stage 2 News Welcome to Stage 2 2019. We would especially like to welcome the new families that have enrolled at The Entrance PS. I hope your time at our school is enjoyable, rewarding and full of learning. All students have settled into their new classes well and have been focussing on positive behaviour choices to allow for maximum learning opportunities. Blue chart behaviours are best! The Stage 2 teachers for this year are:

3R: Mrs Robinson 4D: Mrs Duncan 4H: Mrs Haslam 3K: Mrs Kirk 4/5A: Ms Ambrose

The Entrance PS thrives on keeping the communication line open from school to home each and every day. If you have concerns about any issue and wish to discuss them with your child’s classroom teacher, please contact the office so that an appointment can be scheduled, or a returned phone call made. Remember an appointment is necessary as teachers cannot speak to you during teaching time or after the 9:15am morning bell. NOTES are sent home on a regular basis. It is important that you always check your child’s bag for notes. Every note that is sent

home should always be read by families. Placing notes on your fridge door is a good way to remind you when events are coming up or if money needs to be returned to school for excursions and other exciting events. Most importantly don’t forget to download our school App – this gives daily messages and reminders.

Stage 2 Camp is fast approaching.

Camp dates are: Wednesday 29th May to Friday 31st May, Week 5, Term 2 at Active Outdoor Camps Morisset. Medical notes were sent home this week.

Please fill these out and return to your child’s class teacher as soon as possible so any individual needs can be accommodated. Initial 10% deposits of $28.50 are now due.

Progress payments of any amount can be made anytime throughout this term. If you have any queries about camp contact the office to organise to speak with Mrs Duncan.

ATTENDANCE A reminder that if your child is absent from school, you can ring through the reason for absence to our office, or

send an absentee note with your child the next day they return to school. If your child is absent, sick for three consecutive days, a doctor’s certificate is required. Remember, if you are planning a holiday during the school term a request for exemption is required from the Principal four weeks prior to departure. These are Departmental requirements and the expectations are that every student should be at school every day, unless they are sick. Stage 2 Teachers Mrs Haslam, Ms Ambrose, Mrs Robinson, Mrs Kirk and Mrs Duncan.

Stage 3 News Dear Parents/ Caregivers, Although we have been at school for a few weeks now, I’d like to welcome you all back to a very busy 2019! We hope you enjoyed your break and had a wonderful time with your kid/s. Last week (Week 3) we held our Stage 3 information session. We communicated the activities/excursions we have planned for Stage 3. If you have any questions about what was discussed or if you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher via Seesaw, phone call to the school or by school email ([email protected]). You can also schedule a meeting by making an appointment with the ladies at the front office. Our first activity/excursion for the year is our Stage 3 Aboriginal Heritage Excursion on Tuesday 19th March (for classes 5/6D,

6M and 6B) and Wednesday 20th March (for classes 5A, 5H and 5E). We will be attending the Girrakool and Bulgandry Aboriginal sites to help support our understanding of Aboriginal perspectives. The cost of the excursion is $12 and is due to the front office by 11th March. There is a limit of 60 places for each day. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to experience Aboriginal culture.

A few more things…

● Please ensure to notify the school of any absences. ● Students must continue to wear FULL SCHOOL UNIFORM

(including hat) ● No mobile phones in school. If your child needs to bring a

phone it can be left in the office. Kind regards, Miss Martinez (Rel. AP Stage 3) Miss Clarke, Miss Dawson, Mrs Hyslop, Mrs Ambrose and Mr McInnes

The Year 6 2019 shirts have been ordered with the winning design coming from our School Vice Captain, Laykin. Congratulations Laykin! It was a close competition! Thank you to all of our talented designers. We appreciate the effort that you put into your designs. We are now awaiting delivery.

The Entrance Public School would like to thank the Year 6 cohort of 2018 for their gift to the school, a brand

new trophy cabinet built by The Entrance Men’s Shed.

The money from our 2018 Fete not only paid for the Year 6 Farewell but provided enough money to purchase this much needed trophy cabinet. A big thank you to Ken who designed and built the cabinet. It looks absolutely wonderful in our foyer!

Lunchtime in the Library

Monday - Thursday

Chess Club Drawing

Quiet Reading

All students welcome to visit the library to hone their chess and drawing skills or pick up a book for some quiet reading. The library does buzz with activity during this time and our quiet egg chairs are a big hit for those students needing an extra quiet space.

Every Wednesday

Serial Book Readers

Club

Our Serial Book Readers Club has started meeting, giving students an opportunity to chat about their favourite books and to explore new books coming to the library. Already we have had a sneak peek at an array of awesome new books coming into the library and explored the travelling suitcase of Belinda Murrell. We have started a drawing project to show Ms Murrell our gratitude for sharing her suitcase with us. New members are always welcome!

Book Fair on Voting Weekend!

Spread the word to all friends and family to come down to The Entrance Public School for voting on Saturday 23 rd March. We are hosting our first book fair in the library on this day from 9am to 2pm and would love you all to pop in to say hi and buy a book and support our school library!

Scholastic Book Club

Book Club Issue 1 is now closed. Orders are expected to be delivered by the end of Week 4. A special offer from Scholastic comes with all LOOP orders. To find out more, see Mrs Evans in the library before school. Issue 2 will be coming soon!

Every Day is Library Day!

Your child will have brought home notification about their library day. Students visit the library on these days with their classes but it is important to remember that the library is open every day. Students who finish their books before their next scheduled

library session should visit the library in the morning or at lunch to return their books and borrow a new book. Students still reading their library books on their scheduled library day should bring their library books in to re-borrow. All loans earn class library points. The two classes with the most library points at the end of term will be invited to our exclusive library party!
