Principal’s Message
Welcome to Week 7 everyone. Quite a few things to draw your attention to this week,
so please take the time to read and review everything in this week’s newsletter.
Last month, at the first P&C meeting of the year, the P&C agreed that it has been some
time since we asked you the parents and carers of Cardiff South for your input about the
dates and times that P&C meets, how it runs, when you would like feedback about what
they are doing, what fundraisers you see as important and so forth. So, a little further on
in today’s newsletter you’ll see a message from our P&C President, Hannah Jefferson,
offering you the opportunity to have some input into the things listed above. If you
could set aside 10 minutes to complete their survey, your feedback would be greatly
appreciated and will help P&C know how best to meet your needs.
On the subject of P&C, you would be aware that through their great work last year (and
your support) that we have been able to begin the process of replacing the students’
fixed playground equipment. This process will absolutely involve feedback from the
students about what equipment items are important to them. The SRC with the support
of Mrs Conrick are about to survey all of the students K‐6 about their preferences. Also a
little further on in today’s newsletter you will see a message from our SRC and you are
invited to offer your feedback as well. Although you are unlikley to play on it yourself, it
was the support of parents and the community that helped us raise the $35,000 needed
to install new equipment, so if you would like to vote on what goes in, here’s your
chance!
Finally today, there are two important dates on the National calendar that occur this
week. The first of these is ‘Close the Gap Day’ on this Thursday 15th March. This day is
about improving the health outcomes for Aboriginal students and their families across
the country. Did you know that at Cardiff South we have 32 students that identify as
Aboriginal? Health outcomes for Aboriginal people are significantly worse than Non‐
Aboriginal people. As a country we have to do better at closing this unacceptable gap. At
school on Thursday, to mark this event, all students K‐6 will participate in a range of
indigenous games during their daily fitness lessons. The aim is to raise the students
awareness about health in general and expand their knowledge of traditional games.

The second event, on Friday 16th March is the ‘National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence’. All
students have the right to be safe at school. Bullying and violence has no place in Australia. To mark this event,
I’m running a poster competition for the students. All they need to do is design a poster that includes a message
or strategy for stamping out violence and bullying. I’d be more than happy for the students to discuss ideas at
home with you, however the poster must be their own work. The posters are due in on Friday and I hope to
have some little prizes for the best poster in K‐2 and 3‐6. If you’d like more information go to:

Have a great week

School Photos A‐One Fotomakers will be visiting our school next week on Tuesday 20th March to take photos of all students in
K‐6 students. Photo day for the Muwani preschool group will be Friday 23rd and Kuwaluwain will have their
photos taken on Monday 19th March. ‘Purchase envelopes’ have been sent home today with the students in
preparation for photo day. Parents and carers have the opportunity to purchase photos of their children by
completing the details on the envelope and sending payment with the envelope on the day the photos are
taken. Please do not attempt to send in the envelope before Photo Day, as it will be sent back home again. A‐
One Fotomakers request that if you choose to pay by cash, the correct money be sent in as no change can be
issued. Other payment options include credit card or cheque.
Cultural Infusion
Harmony Day is next Wednesday and to mark the occasion we have a number of activities planned at school to
help the students develop and understanding and repsect for diversity of culture. On Monday, there are number
of performers coming into the school for an experience called ‘Cultural Infusion’. There will be five specific
performances: Indigenous infusion, Bollywood infusion, Korean dance and arts, Latin dance fiesta and African
dance and drumming. The cost is $15 per student and was included with your Term 1 statement. The deadline
for permission and payment is this Thursday 15th March at 3:30pm. Because of the organisation required, we
will be unable to accept late payments after this deadline. Students that have not paid will complete alternate
activities supervised by teachers. It should be a really worthwhile series of activities.

P&C Feedback
As you may be aware P&C play a large role in the school by raising money to provide facilities and resources that
benefit the students and school as a whole. Last year we raised $35,000 to install new play equipment in the K‐2
playground, which we are looking forward to seeing installed later this year. In 2018 the P&C have committed to
assisting the school by replenishing our much loved Home Readers. This will allow our children to have access to
a wider variety of quality books with content that interests them. P&C are always looking for new members and
new ways of approaching ideas, therefore I am asking for your help. If you could take a few short minutes to
complete a survey regarding how we can make being a part of P&C more appealing to you it would be greatly
appreciated. Cardiff South P&C Survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RXLTNM6
Thanks in advance. The next P&C meeting is Wednesday 21st March at 7pm in the library.

Easter Raffle Time!!!
It’s that time of year again when our P&C run the annual Easter Raffle. Raffle Tickets have
been sent home with students and will need to be returned to school by next Friday 23rd
March. The raffle will be drawn on Wednesday 28th March. There will also be a prize to the
student who sells the most tickets in the Infants and in the Primary.
This year P&C are excited to be raising funds towards replenishing the school’s Home Reader collection. To
make our Easter Raffle a success we are asking for your help by donating Easter Treats to be used as prizes in
the raffle. Your child’s classroom will have a collection bag for you to place donations. Please return donations
asap. We thank you for your generosity that helps make the Easter raffle such a success.
Canteen Volunteers Survey
You may have noticed a survey sent out on the Skoolbag app yesterday from our P&C. We are still in need of
some more canteen volunteers and P&C are trying to make it easy to indicate your availability to help. Even if
you cannot be available on a regular basis but are willing to be a back‐up or fill‐in, you indicate this through the
survey. To access the survey, please go to: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/D99P3ZH
Soccer Gala Day
On Tuesday the 6th of March, I had the pleasure of taking both a junior and a senior girls’ soccer team to the Speers Point Regional Football Facility to help celebrate Female Football Week.
Schools from around our region were invited to attend a gala day designed to encourage more girls to play sport and perhaps to try a sport they never had before – soccer.
Each team played four games of soccer on small pitches which are surrounded by walls and nets. The games were very fast because the ball never goes out of play and players soon learn to use the walls to their advantage.
Each of our teams had ten players, but only six were on at a time, so the girls were frequently subbed on and off. Almost everyone had a turn at being goal keeper.
I was very impressed by the girls and their playing skills but I was even more impressed by their beautiful manners and the way in which they conducted themselves on the day. In spite of the rain, they managed to keep smiling and just had a ball.
I must give a huge shout out to Janine Pilarski, who managed the senior team while I was supervising the junior team. Great job, Mrs Pilarski, and thank you. A big thank you must also go to Mrs Campbell, who was an invaluable assistant to me on the day. Our Cardiff South parent cheer squad was by far the best of the day!

PSSA JUNIOR NETBALL TRIALS ‐ On Wednesday March 14th & Thursday March
15th , Mrs Shoebridge will be conducting the junior netball trials for the PSSA Winter Competition. Trials will run during the lunch break. This is open for all boys and girls in Years 3 & 4.
PSSA SOCCER TRIALS ‐ The junior boys and girls PSSA soccer trials will be held on Monday 19th and Monday
26th March after eating time at lunch. Students do not need shin pads or boots for the trials.
PLEASE NOTE PSSA NETBALL AND SOCCER ‐ BOYS AND GIRLS ARE ABLE TO TRIAL FOR BOTH, BUT ONLY ABLE TO CHOOSE ONE, NOT BOTH!
SRC News
The SRC holds a very important role in our school. Each class has a representative voted for by the class. The purpose of our SRC is to discuss issues and be responsive towards making decisions to help our school and community become an even better place to learn, grow and support. Students will be presented with their badges at this Thursday’s assembly.
Last week the SRC members, school leaders and Mrs Conrick met for our first meeting. We were very active discussing goals as an SRC for this year. The first item on our agenda was to look at options for our new K‐2 playground equipment. Students were very excited and showed exceptional leadership skills when discussing the best equipment that reflects the needs and wants of our students. As a group, the SRC and leaders shortlisted a variety of equipment.
As a school, this week we are aiming to select our top five choices to submit to a tender for construction. We acknowledge and thank the P&C for their contribution to making this possible. All students and parents are invited to take part in this vote. Students will be voting in class under the guidance of their SRC member and parents can access the voting form via the schoolbag app or by using the voting form on the back of the Newsletter. Please drop forms into the office or with Mrs Conrick once you have voted.
Voting forms will need to be returned to your child’s class teacher for the SRC to tally the results by Wednesday 21st March.
School Cross Country
The annual school cross country carnival will be held on Friday 23rd March on school grounds. Students will have an early recess from 10:30‐11:00 and the carnival will hopefully be underway by 11:15. Students are to wear sport uniforms and joggers to school and it would be a good idea to bring extra water on the day. ALL students will be seated with their class for the duration of the carnival and will not be able to move back and forth between their parents and class mates. Students are also reminded to make sure they have their asthma puffers with them during the race. Parents are invited to attend the carnival. We ask that you arrive by 11:00am and seat yourselves on the infants grass area. Please don’t sign in at the office, but you will be asked to complete a sign on register while watching the races. This will be brought around by the school captains during the races. Thanks for your support and fingers crossed for perfect weather on the day!

Cardiff South Public SchoolPrimary Ethics provides the opportunity for NSW public primary school students who don’t attend scripture classes (SRE) to participate in philosophical ethics classes. We have a few vacancies for volunteers to teach Years K‐6 ethics classes. The classes teach children how to approach ethical issues and develop their capacity for considered moral judgement, which will enable them to respond more thoughtfully to many of the problems and issues they will face in their lives. Volunteer Ethics Teachers are trained to deliver our age‐appropriate curriculum every week and to use the accompanying learning and teaching materials. For more information, please contact: David Holland cardiffsth‐[email protected] or Mellissa Poteris ‐ Ethics Coordinator for Cardiff South Public School [email protected]
