PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

New ‘Learning from Home’ Hub The Department of Education has recently launched a ‘Learning from home’ Hub on the Department’s website which provides information and resources for parents to support students learning from home. In addition, in the event of a ‘school closure’, DPS will provide student learning including electronic and paper based activities especially needed for younger students. The electronic communication will be shared through current digital platforms such as SeeSaw or Google Docs. Even so, Drummoyne Public School is currently open for learning and children are expected to attend school. New P&C Executive Congratulations to the 2020 P&C executive who were elected at the AGM on Tuesday night namely President: Duncan Watson, Vice President: Matt Stedman, Assistant Vice President: Aviva Armstrong, Secretary: Kylie Jackson, Uniform Shop coordinator: Ellena Mangavoulakis, Playground: Heather El-Rahim, Communication & volunteer coordinator: Sylvia Anderson, Fete Co-ordinator Walid El-Khoury, Kindy coordinator: Ria Giann, Class Parent coordinator: Sharon Brown, Grants committee: Kendal Mackay, Mothers & Fathers Day coordinator: Kerrie Hudson & Ellena Mangavoulakis, Activitython: Kate Young, Jacklyn Blaszczymaski. Grandparents Morning Tea: Ellena Mangavoulakis. The Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer roles have had an expression of interest but are yet to be confirmed, There is still a vacancy for the Canteen Co-ordinator position. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to the outgoing executive for their hard work, governance and faithful support of the school throughout 2019 and to everyone who supported the successful running of P&C happenings through various roles and sub-committees last year. Thank you to all of our parents who, through the parent survey, have volunteered to support a school or P&C event this year.

SCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM For some years, the P&C has supported our School Enrichment Program to enable students across the school to receive targeted enrichment and learning support. This was implemented since 2015 through the employment of the Learning Enrichment and Support Teacher, Mrs Leigh Russ with the program funded through the P&C. I am pleased to let you know that following a merit selection process within the Department and convened by the school, Leigh Russ was successful in securing a permanent position at the school. This involved a State-wide advertisement, CV application, interview by a panel with staff and parent reps and referee checks. Mrs Russ is delighted to continue her work with the School Enrichment Program in her permanent capacity and greatly appreciative of the P&C for their faithful support over the years. I would like to congratulate Leigh and sincerely thank the P&C for their commitment to the school. New Class Lining Up Areas It is pleasing to see the way our young ones have settled into the new morning routines and are lining up in classes each day ready for school. This is an important first step in transitioning to school each morning. To help this transition and in keeping with social distancing practices, families are asked to say their goodbyes and leave the children to socialise with classmates at drop off.

FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK

2K have been working hard on creating Sizzling Starts for their writing. They discussed using dialogue, sounds (onomatopoeia), action and curiosity at the beginning of their stories to create an interesting start and engage the reader. For this piece of writing, students used a picture of a phoenix as the stimulus. Then they had a go at drawing a phoenix.

2S HOT AIR BALLOONS

In class 2S, we enjoyed creating multi coloured hot air balloons. We used our imagination and carefully stuck and weaved strips of colourful paper across each other. This made them look three-dimensional! 2S are soaring through Year 2!

FUNDRAISING FOR TARONGA ZOO - WILDLIFE CRISIS APPEAL.

The SRC students have kicked off with our first fundraising event and are excited to announce that we have partnered with Taronga Zoo to support their Wildlife Crisis Appeal. Our fundraising event will be in Week 9 and Week 10! We ask that students bring in a variety of coin amounts/ notes (no larger than $10) over this time period. Students could even do additional jobs around the house to get extra pocket money to bring in! Once all money has been collected, we will put the coins and notes together to create a picture of an Australian animal. The SRC students will take an aerial photo of the final product for you to see! The funds you donate, will help Taronga Zoo address the immediate crisis, care for the rescued wildlife in Taronga Wildlife Hospitals as well as Taronga’s long-term work to save wildlife from devastation of bushfire and severe drought. There is much to be done, but with Taronga’s drive and expertise and our support, we can ensure that Australian wildlife has a fighting chance to recover from the bushfires. From the SRC team.

LAUNCH OF YEAR 6 LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

The year 6 leadership program is for every student in Year 6 to have the opportunity to learn and show their leadership skills in various activities to help our school. We would also love to keep you updated on the student activities and achievements happening in our school. The Year 6 newsletter team includes la Bains, Annabelle Bissaker, Ava Burns Bonnici, Aaliyah Dizdar, Stephanie Maguire, Eliana Parvakis, Laura Russ, Erin Voukenas and Charlotte Walsh. We chose this leadership role because there are many things happening all the time in our school that you don't always get to see and this is a way we can share our learning and celebrate the great things happening. Across Year 6 every student has identified a role (or in some cases more than 1) where we will be mentored by a Year 6 teacher. Some of the roles include PALS (Playground and Activity Leader) where we organise group activities in the playground, sometimes involving equipment and games like Duck Duck Goose, covering the sandpit for our K-2 students after playtime, leading dance, art and drama groups, being a leader of our Kindergarten buddy peer program, assisting packing up the chairs after assemblies, taking out and returning sport’s equipment each lunch time. We have already worked with our teacher mentors so we know when we are to do our role and we know the expectations for each. We think this is excellent preparation for us before high school and an exciting way to help our wonderful school. Year 6 newsletter team

HARMONY DAY

Today, 20 March, Drummoyne Public School was awash with orange and different national costumes, as students and staff celebrated Harmony Day. It was an important day for our students as they remembered their own cultural heritage and showed respect for the heritage of others. Almost 40 percent of the students at DPS identify as having a language background other than English. There are 39 different languages spoken by students and families at our school! Our diversity is our strength as we join together as one community to learn from and with each other.

VOLUNTEERING AT DPS WHS REQUIREMENTS

Drummoyne Public School welcomes volunteers to the school in many capacities. Even the smallest commitment to help out can really make a difference to the running of school programs and creating more meaningful experiences for the children. It is also a great way to meet other parents and the wider school community.

If you volunteer to help in any way at the school, the NSW Department of Education requires that parents or close relatives who volunteer at their child's school, complete a Declaration for volunteers and non child related contractors (attached at the end of this newsletter) and provide the school with 100 points of ID. To complete this form, please visit the school administration office prior to volunteering and fill in your details and provide us with the appropriate identification. We can then add you to our register, which covers you for any volunteering roles during your time as a parent at DPS. This means if you have already filled in this for with the school you do not have to do it again. If you have a Working With Children Clearance obtained for other reasons, you may instead give the office the WWC number and expiry, along with a piece of identification that includes your birth date, ideally a driver’s licence. Angela Fintan School Administration Manager School Bus Routes & Timetables For information about the school bus routes, timetables and Opal cards please go to the Transport for NSW website: https://transportnsw.info/routes/bus

3. How have schools been selected to take part? The survey is open to all NSW government schools at no cost to them. Your child’s school has decided to participate.

Page 13: Term 1 Week 8 newsletter · Anderson, Fete Co-ordinator Walid El-Khoury, Kindy coordinator: Ria Giann, ... CV application, interview by a panel with staff and parent reps and referee

CENTRE FOR EDUCATION STATISTICS AND EVALUATION WWW.CESE.NSW.GOV.AU

4. How will taking part in this survey benefit my child’s school? The Tell Them From Me student survey will provide school principals and school leaders with insight into student engagement, wellbeing and effective teaching practices at their school, from the perspective of students.

Data collected from the survey responses are quickly compiled into reports for school leaders. Principals can then use this information to help them identify emerging issues and plan for school improvement.

5. What does my child need to do to participate in the survey? The survey typically takes less than 30 minutes and is conducted entirely online through a secure website operated by the survey developers, The Learning Bar. Schools will make computers or laptops available so that students can complete the survey during school hours.

6. Does my child have to participate? No, participation in the survey is optional. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish. If, during the survey, your child is uncomfortable, he/she can choose to stop the survey at any time. The majority of questions in the survey can be skipped. Parents/students have a right to apply for access to, and correction of, a student’s information.

7. Will the school be able to identify my child from their responses?Staff in schools will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. To ensure confidentiality, participating students will receive a unique username and password. Where fewer than five students respond to a question, the results will not be made available.

A small number of staff in the department’s Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE) will have access to individual student responses for the purpose of state-wide

analysis. Individual students’ data will be held on a secure server with access strictly limited to CESE researchers. The researchers are interested in trends only – not in individual student responses. No student will be identified in any publication. No school will be identified unless they have given permission.

8. What sort of analysis will be done on the survey data?Once the surveys are completed by students, reports are prepared and in most cases are available to schools within three business days. School leaders can use the data to better understand the experiences and views of students at their school.

CESE will undertake state-wide analysis of the survey data in conjunction with existing student data held by the department, including performance data.

The results will help all schools better understand the relationship between wellbeing, engagement, effective teaching and student learning. Results from CESE’s analysis of this data will also help teachers and principals discuss what works to improve student outcomes. This supports the department’s continuing focus on quality teaching and leadership. The data will be retained for future analysis to help us better understand the nature of student engagement and wellbeing over time.

9. Can all school students participate in the survey? The primary school survey is designed for students in Years 4 to 6. Schools are encouraged to allow as many students as possible in these year groups to participate. Secondary schools are encouraged to allow as many students as possible in Years 7 to 12 to participate.

10. When will the Tell Them From Me survey happen? The surveys will be conducted in all participating schools at the end of Term 1 and (optionally) Term 3/4.

CENTRE FOR EDUCATION STATISTICS AND EVALUATION WWW.CESE.NSW.GOV.AU

What is CESE?The Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE) is part of the NSW Department of Education.

CESE has been established to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and accountability of education in New South Wales. CESE will identify and share what works, creating new opportunities to improve teaching and learning across all of education.

More information about CESE is available at: www.cese.nsw.gov.au

What is The Learning Bar?The Learning Bar specialises in research-based design and facilitation of student assessments and survey solutions for both primary and secondary students. The in-house research team led by the President, Dr J Douglas Willms, undertakes extensive projects used in the school system to affect national policy. It is against this research that the survey, Tell Them From Me, has become the largest national school survey in Canada, used in nine of the ten provinces. Globally, more than 6,300 schools and 5.4 million students have participated in the survey over the last twelve years.

Dr Willms recently held the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Literacy and Human Development. He plays a lead role in the development of questions on student engagement for the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA).

For purely administrative purposes, The Learning Bar will also have temporary access to identifiable student responses to the survey questions. Other than The Learning Bar and CESE researchers within the department, identifiable student responses will not be disclosed to any other person or body other than as required by law.

More information about The Learning Bar is available at: www.thelearningbar.com

Tell Them From Me student survey:

Information and consent form for

parents and carers

6th March, 2020

Dear Parents and Carers

In Term 1 2020, our school is taking part in the Tell Them From Me student survey (Years 4-6). The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help them improve. The survey is completed on-line and is run by an independent research company, The Learning Bar, which specialises in school-based surveys.

Staff in schools will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. To ensure confidentiality, participating students will receive a unique username and password. Where fewer than five students respond to a question, the results will be suppressed. The survey typically takes 30 minutes or less to complete and will be administered by the school during normal school hours

As well as schools getting student feedback, the Department of Education, through the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE), has access to data from across NSW and is running a research project to look at state-wide patterns of student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. The research is looking at how these things impact on student outcomes, including academic performance. Individual students will not be identified in any CESE publications, and all information will be handled in accordance with the relevant privacy legislation. Students’ personal information will not be disclosed by the department to any other person or body other than as required by law.

This research will help schools in New South Wales to better understand how to improve student wellbeing and engagement. It will also help teachers and principals discuss what works to improve student outcomes.

Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. Your child will not take part if either you or your child do not wish. If, during the survey, your child is uncomfortable, he/she can choose to stop the survey at any time. The majority of questions in the survey can be skipped.

If you do not want your child to take part in the survey, please complete the attached form and return it to your child's school by 20th March, 2020.

Persons to complete this declaration

This declaration must be completed by volunteers and non child-related contractors

seeking engagement with the Department of Education (the Department) where the

person is exempt under the Child Protection (Working with Children) Regulation 2013 from

having to hold a Working with Children Check clearance. The declaration applies to:

• ‘exempt’ volunteers who are parents or close relatives of a child at the school at

which they are volunteering. This includes day to day reading helpers, canteen

helpers and other volunteers who are a parent or close relative.

• ‘exempt’ volunteers who are under 18 years of age.

• non child-related contractors who are contractors hired by the school or P&C

Association to perform maintenance services or other additional services, where the

work will not ordinarily involve contact with children for extended periods (for

example, tree lopping, electrical testing, annual maintenance of fire extinguishers).

Persons in these categories of ‘workers’ do not need a WWCC clearance number and

should not be established on the Department’s electronic record of eCPC.

This declaration does not apply to contractors employed in the Assisted School Travel

Program or through the Department’s facilities maintenance programs. They are screened

by other sections of the Department.

See the Department’s Working with Children Check Procedure for more details.

Privacy Statement

The information collected on this declaration form and from the identification documents

you provide will be used by the Department to manage risk associated with its legal

obligations to ensure the protection of children and young persons in its care. The

Department will use this information to check its business systems, including eCPC and

the Department’s database of persons not to be employed, to ensure that there is no

barrier to your engagement as a volunteer or contractor. All information you provide to the

Department will be used, disclosed and stored consistent with the NSW privacy and other

related law. The completed declaration form and a record of the eCPC check will be filed

by the school/business area in secure storage for seven years from date of inactivity and

then destroyed. You may request access to this information from the school or business

centre at which it is held. The Department will not disclose the information to another

agency or person unless required by law.

Identification documents are viewed to verify your identity and check details recorded on

the declaration form in eCPC. Any copy of identification documents you provide to the

Department will be securely destroyed immediately after their use for this purpose.

Failure to provide information required to complete this declaration and identity check may

result in declination of your request to work as an ‘exempt’ volunteer or non child-related

contractor.
