Winter 2017
Dear WHPS Family
Welcome back to school and the start of the second term. Our winter season is always
most enjoyable because of the exciting programme which is in store for the boys and the
school in general.
Although it is darker in the early mornings and one needs great resolve to get out of bed,
there is the added advantage of wood fires, good reading weather and winter sports to
enjoy.
Our academic programme is full and includes the Grade 6 Real Life for Kids. Here the boys
submerge themselves in a board game that takes on aspects of life which are so much
more than just a game. They earn money, bid for property, invest in real estate and emerge
much wiser than when they started. This is a highlight in the Grade 6 year.
There is the enthusiasm surrounding Art Alive as well as the three drama productions. This
year the Grade 6 and 7 boys will do separate plays to give each of them a change of format
and a greater opportunity for more boys to participate.
A Bingo evening and Family Fun Day have been organised by the Parents’ Association with
a view that our community events should be focused around including the children in
events. These two fundraisers will be in line with the reduced fundraising drives for this
year. Our Readathon brings attention to the importance of reading for the boys’ educational
development. The proceeds for the Readathon will contribute to the Grade 7 Leavers’ Gift
project to further enhance our Ruddell Library for greater enjoyment by the boys. An
exciting project for 2017 which will see a balcony being added to the library where boys will
be able to read outside.
A highlight for our school and the boys is Grandparents’ Day. Please book Grandmas and
Grandpas for the relevant dates. Should they not be able to attend, I encourage you to
invite a significant person in your son’s lives to join us for the morning. I can personally
recommend this special event on the WHPS calendar.
Our theme for the term will be using the acronym GREAT
Get, Really, Excited, About, Today This will focus on our boys taking every opportunity that is on offer at our school, to have a
positive attitude and that they have an “I can” mentality. The focus will remain on the boys’
personal excellence, where they continue to strive to improve in relation to their own
achievements.
I welcome you all back to an action packed term and hope you enjoy your school
involvement.
Kind regards,
Mark Whitelaw

WHPS Art Alive
WHPS Art Alive Exhibition – a short introduction
The first WHPS Art Alive Exhibition was held 31 years ago and is a highlight in the School calendar. The aim of the
exhibition, which is held in the Waterkloof House Theatre, is to create a greater awareness of Fine Art in all its diversity,
amongst the pupils, staff and parents of the School in particular, and the broader community in general. Submissions
are invited from emerging artists as well as well-established local artists, and these are presented to a Committee
comprising local academic and accomplished artists who then select works for exhibition.
The Waterkloof House Theatre is a spacious and modern building which transforms successfully into a wonderful gallery
for the duration of Art Alive. We extend our invitation to all parents and friends of WHPS to come and join us on the
Opening Night, 6th of June 2017 at 18h30 for the opening of this unique visual experience. The art will be on display
until Saturday 10th of June 2017.

New Staff
I would like to extend a warm welcome to our two new members of staff, Mrs Kerry Shaw and Mr Travis
Flude.
Mrs Kerry Shaw is no stranger to our school as she is the mother of Luke in Grade 3. She has
extensive experience in the teaching of Mathematics. Mrs Shaw has taught at Crawford College and
St Marys DSG amongst other schools. She will be our Grade 6 class teacher and will be teaching
Mathematics and Science to Grade 5 – 7s. We welcome Mrs Shaw and her husband, Andrew, to the staff.
Mr Travis Flude joins us from St Benedicts Prep, where he has taught for 12 years, including two years
internship. His passion is Information Technology and integrated learning across the curriculum. Mr Flude will be the Head of Department for IT and he will be involved with the boarding duties in Hamilton House. Mr Flude will be living on the school property with his wife Jeanette and their two sons.
