Hello KSPS families, Welcome to Term 2. I trust you all enjoyed your break and are ready to face the excitement of the term ahead. It promises to be another busy one with a variety of opportunities for our students from the BEAT to Luke Kelly Cup, the Year 5 and Year 6 camps, our KSPS Athletics Carnival and a Touch Gala Day. Not to mention NAPLAN testing, visiting artists, cultural experiences and reports! There are many fundraising ventures on the calendar this term too, the Disco this Friday night, Mother’s Day Stall and a Book Fair. We rely on your continued suppor t of these school events and encourage you all to engage with them. Sunday morning there was a working bee for our school garden. A BIG THANK YOU to Mel and Darryn Whelan, Liz Clark, Sam Hohn, Nicole Grenfell and Danielle Grieves for all of their effor ts weeding, fer tilizing and laying the watering system. We are almost ready to start planting .
As you are aware, tomorrow is a public holiday for ANZAC Day, which is why the newsletter is out a day early. Remember students can participate in the town march tomorrow, they must be in full school uniform (green and gold, with hat and waterbottle) and meet Mrs. Shield behind BP at 9:15am for a 9:40 star t. It would be great to see a good representation of our students attend. Please note that this year there is a different route due to the new cenotaph. I would like to CONGRATULATE our School Captains and SRC on hosting such a moving ANZAC Day service this morning. It was a very deserving tr ibute for such an important day; I felt extremely proud of all our students, those directly involved as well as all those who were such a respectful audience. THANK YOU to Leading Aircraftwoman Loren Turner for attending our service and explaining to the students the significance of the ANZAC spirit. Thank you also to all the parents who attended and for those of you who stayed for morning tea. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Mrs. Catherine Shield for coordinating the service, Mrs. Lana Randell, our Defence School Transition Aide, in providing a lovely morning tea and to Mrs. Piper for her beautiful display in the library.
As it is the start of a new term, I have asked Mrs. Lane, our Health/PE teacher for years 3-6 to provide a summary of the students sporting achievements for Term 1. It is an impressive resume. Interschool sport has been very popular with our grade 5 and 6 students with a total of 75 students returning permission forms to par ticipate in this spor ting event. Due to the popularity, KSPS has organised for 2 bus loads of children to attend. We commenced Term 1 with 19 students participating in AFL and netball. The children were involved in learning skills and participating in drills to consolidate these skills, which Katherine South had 19 students participate in AFL and 19 in the netball gala day. Katherine South teams were not successful in winning the gala day in either sport but all teams showed a
great improvement in their skill development and ability to play the games. Tamzyn Paull, Hayley Simpson and Jaylee McIvor were all selected in the Katherine Region Netball Team which recently travelled to Darwin to play in the NT Netball Championships. ‘I got to meet new people from Alice Springs and Darwin and got to experience what is would be like in a boarding school. Principals Message
seeing a lot of cute and interesting animals. My favourite was the monkey, they were so intelligent. I achieved staying under the hoop and defending with people taller than me. I also learnt a lot of team work with passing down the court. This experience will be good for me when I go to boarding school when I’m older.’ Jaylee, Year 6. ‘I really liked going to Darwin to meet new people and playing for Katherine. We got to meet people from Darwin, Palmerston, Alice Springs and Barkly. I got to experience playing with my team and having fun. Over the three days I was there my skills got better and I am learning how to calm down when I pass the ball.’ Hayley, Year 6.
Five students from our school were invited to try out for the Katherine Region AFL team due to their outstanding skill level shown throughout the interschool sports sessions and gala days. Alex Dyer, Jay Wuttke, Ian Thomson, Ross Sutherland and Leonard Phillips have all been selected in the Katherine Region AFL team. Mr East’s Rugby Academy continues to play a big part in our sporting program at
KSPS. Mickaylah MacFarlane, Joseph Wendt, Thomas Stothers, Chance Conroy, Cooper Peirce, Fletcher Randell and Lynton Wright have all been selected in the Katherine Region Rugby League Team. Soccer and basketball were run for interschool spor t dur ing the last half of term 1. Thirty eight students were selected to participate in these spor ts. These spor ts were run by students from the high school under supervision from teachers. The high school children were completing a unit of work which required them to plan the session and run the session, taking on board feedback from teachers to improve each week. The students playing sport enjoyed having “big kids” working with them. The high school students all took on feedback given and improved immensely over the four weeks. The gala days for soccer and basketball were run over two afternoons. KSPS soccer team made it into the grand final to play off for fir st place against Clyde Fenton. Clyde Fenton sealed the win with a 2-0 score line in their favour. The basketball children enjoyed playing their games and showed good sportsmanship and improvement in their skills of the game.
We recently had 31 students participate in the Katherine Region Cross Country at the showgrounds. Charli McWhirter and Joe Wendt both placed 2nd in their age groups. Jannah Cruz placed 3rd in her age group. All students completed the race. Our students displayed awesome behaviour and great sportsmanship, cheering all competitors across the finish line. We look forward to hearing of our success this term with interschool sport kicking off with tennis and cricket. A BIG THANK YOU to MRS LANE for coordinating this for us.
I am on leave until Tuesday May 1st and leave the school in Mrs. Shield’s very capable hands.

This term 3/4 have had an exceptional start. We have been learning about, creating and writing interesting narratives. We have been using immersion and learning centres to increase our understanding of what a narrative needs and how to make our writing stronger. We also got to explore the brain and how it works, we even got to touch and investigate a real lamb’s brain. (Thanks Ms Nat!) Today we attended an ANZAC day assembly, our class produced an A-shaped ANZAC wreath. Each student got to contribute by making a poppy flower.
We have had a really boring term ….. JUST KIDDING!

Movie Night
KSPS Dance Academy would like to invite you to a movie evening. When: Wednesday 9th May Where: KSPS Undercover area Time: 5:30pm - 7:30pm Cost: $5 (This will include watching the movie and a sausage sandwich) The money raised from the event will go towards covering the cost of items needed for our Dance Academy and getting us to and from rehearsals.
