Term 2 is well underway! Last week we participated in two solemn events. The first was our ANZAC Day service where we commemorated the sacrifice of the thousands of men and women who served in the armed forces in conflicts in which Australia has been involved. The second was our Alleluia Mass that marked the culmination of our Easter celebrations. Although Easter is the most solemn time in the church’s calendar, it is also the one that provides the greatest hope through the Resurrection. I would like to congratulate the children on the respectful manner in which they participated in both events. During the holidays, I asked all of the children at St Monica’s to enter the Principal’s Holiday Reading Challenge. I was thrilled to receive so many entries and was doubly impressed by how many books individual children read. Yesterday, the names of everyone who entered the Reading Challenge went into a draw and two prizes were awarded in each grade. Special awards were also given to children who read the most books. Congratulations to all children who entered and who will receive a Certificate of Participation at next Monday’s assembly. The list of winners is included later in the newsletter. I am pleased to welcome Mr Terry Maunsey to St Monica’s. Terry will be responsible for maintenance of grounds and equipment and comes highly recommended. I am sure that you will all agree that he has made a noticeable improvement to the ‘look’ of the school since taking up the position at the start of this term. Mr Lyndon Cummings who has been our cleaner for many years is retiring this Friday. Lyndon has given years of devoted service to St Monica’s and his presence will be missed by all of us. On your behalf, I wish him a long and happy retirement. Lyndon will be replaced by contract cleaners, (as per Catholic Education, Diocese of Parramatta guidelines) who will begin working at St Monica’s next week. Wishing everyone a happy and productive term. Cameron Lievore Principal Winter Uniform Changeover All students are required to be in full winter uniform by Week 3, Monday 8th May 2017. Medical

We have had a reported case of Hand Foot and Mouth Disease within the school Please read the following information and seek medical advice if you think your child carries any of these symptoms What is hand foot and mouth disease

Hand foot and mouth disease is generally a mild illness caused by a number of enteroviruses including coxsackieviruses It is usually not a serious illness and occurs and is not related to the foot and mouth disease that affects cattle It mainly occurs in children under 10 years of age but can also occur in older children and adults

What are the symptoms

Hand foot and mouth disease starts with blisters that begin as small red dots which later become ulcers

Blisters appear inside the cheeks gums and on the sides of the tongue as well as on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet In infants blisters can sometimes be seen in the nappy area Blisters usually last for seven 7 to 10 days

Children can sometimes have a low fever irritability sore throat tiredness feel off colour and may be off their food for a day

or two

Very rarely enteroviruses can cause other illnesses that affect the heart brain lining of the brain (meningitis) lungs or eyes How is it treated

Usually no treatment is needed Paracetamol will relieve fever and discomfort Do not give children aspirin Allow blisters to dry out naturally The blisters should not be deliberately burst because the fluid within them is infectious

How long should children stay away from school

Children with hand foot and mouth disease should be excluded from school or childcare facilities until their blisters have dried-up and any rash (if present) has gone and any fever has settled
