FROM THE PRINCIPAL ..
It is great to see the wonderful learning that is taking place in all classes at Hanwood Public School. Well done to Year 3 and Year 5 students who completed their NAPLAN assessments this week. Good luck to our Stage 3 students who will be representing Hanwood Public School at the Mortimer Shield next Thursday. With the cold weather now here, please make sure that tags on school jumpers and jackets are marked clearly with student names. If students are ordering lunches, they need to hand in their lunch orders before the morning bell on Monday or Friday. Please make sure that you check the calendar at the back of the newsletter for important dates of upcoming events that may involve your child/children. We look forward to another great week of learning at HPS in week 4.
WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY
Once again, Hanwood Public School is recognising Walk Safely To School Day, on Friday 17th May (week 3). The aim of this day is to encourage children to add more regular exercise and movement into their day. If you would like your child/ren to participate, please drop your children at the gate of Hanwood Oval, by 9.00am. Mrs McAllister, Mrs Mackerras and Mr Workman will meet them and supervise the walk back to school. Parents and caregivers are more than welcome to join us and walk to school. If you have any questions regarding this, please see Mr Workman.
FEDERAL ELECTION CAKE STALL
The Federal Elections will be held on Saturday 18th May. We are again holding a cake stall to help raise funds for our school. All donations will be gratefully accepted. If anyone is able to provide an hour or two to help run the stall on Saturday, please let the front office or Bec Watt know. Cakes, slices, biscuits, preserves etc are able to be left at the office from Friday 17th May.

Domenico Macri - KB For always being a kind and caring member of the class.
Well done, Domenico!
TEACHER IN THE SPOTLIGHT - Mrs Violi
Mrs Violi loves her role as an Italian teacher as well as a Learning Support teacher, helping children achieve their potential. Mrs Violi loves reading in her spare time. She especially enjoys reading to her little granddaughter and spending quality time with her.
Library - MRS MACKERRAS
Premier’s Reading Challenge H.P.S. participates in the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) each year and all students at our school are enrolled in it. At the end of the challenge, all students who have completed it will receive a special certificate. Students in K-2 participate by listening to stories which are read to them at school. These stories are logged online by the library teacher. Students in Years 3-6 are responsible for reading their own books. Our school library has many books which are on the PRC list and these are labelled with special stickers which make it easy to find appropriate books. Students in Years 3-6 must read 20 books to complete the challenge. Year 3/4 students can read PRC books which are levelled at Year 3 & 4, Year 5 & 6 or Year 7-9. Year 5/6 students can read Year 5 & 6 or Year 7-9 books. Year 3-6 students are logging the books they have read themselves this year. They have been taught how to do it on the PRC website and most primary students have already started doing this. Students are also able to log onto the website and log books at home. HAPPY READING!
KB - MISS BRESOLIN
KB have had a great start to Term 2! We have lots of exciting things happening this term. Our class will be hosting the school assembly in Week 8 (18th June 2019) - so save the date! Please keep an eye out for information regarding this in the coming weeks. Altina Excursion - We are very excited about our Altina Excursion which is coming up this week on Friday 17th May. We will be leaving at 9:30am, so please make sure that you are on time to school on Friday – this is really important! Just a friendly reminder, your child will need to bring; Fruit break Lunch (NO lunch orders) Drink bottle Hat Sunscreen Students will wear their full school uniform on the day. We will return to school at approximately 2:30pm.
5/6L - MS CAPSTICK
We are off to a flying start for term 2. We have been busy beginning all of our new units and completing some NAPLAN preparation. In History, we have began looking and how and why Australia became a nation and organised groups for our super exciting assessment task. Students will role play their selected significant events from the past and capture it with film to create a historical documentary. During Science this term we are investigating STEM activities, (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Students each have a vital role during these activities where they collaboratively work toward the end goal of the task. This week students had to construct the tallest tower possible using only hard spaghetti and marsh mellows. STEM is a fun and innovative way to learn. Students always work hard in Mathematics, we have recently finished learning how to collect data and organise it in to different specialist graphs. Students enjoyed collecting data from classrooms around the school and organising their data in different forms.
