Term 2 Week 4 21 May 2018

On Friday, 18 May it was National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD). This is an annual event that is now in its 19th year. It was great to see so many of our students participate in this event. The objectives of WSTSD are:

• To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour.

• To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age.

• To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.

• To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians.

• To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult to change as children become adults.

• To promote the use of Public Transport. • To reduce the level of air pollution created by

motor vehicles.

I must admit I drove to work on Friday. I used Google Maps to see how long it would take me to walk and it said 9 hours and 9 minutes. Maybe next year!!! Thank you to Mrs Wealleans for organising this event including the fresh fruit.

Attendance Regular attendance is of the upmost importance. When a child misses school it breaks the link in their social and academic development. Whilst I understand that some absences are unavoidable due to illness it is imperative students attend school each day.

Those students who have fallen below state attendance targets will receive a letter home this week. It is a school’s responsibility to monitor attendance. It is a parent’s responsibility to inform the school of any absence in a timely manner. Your cooperation with this matter is greatly appreciated. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you wish to discuss your child’s / children’s attendance.

NAPLAN Last week students in Years 3 and 5 completed the NAPLAN assessments. I want to congratulate all students who participated in NAPLAN for trying their best. Results will be provided to schools from mid-August. If you have

any concerns about your child’s academic progress, please don’t hesitate to contact their classroom teacher.

Head Lice Headlice can be a challenging issue for both students and parents. At Tuggerawong Public School, we recommend that parents regularly check and treat headlice using the ‘Conditioner and Comb-Through’ method regularly and at the beginning of each school term.

Can Head Lice be prevented? It may be difficult to prevent head lice from spreading among children, but the following are some steps you can take to help keep lice away:

• Ask your child not to share combs, brushes or hair decorations

• Ask your child not to try on hats that belong to other children

• If your child will be sleeping away from home, be sure to pack his or her own pillow and towel

What are the signs of head lice?

Because lice move very fast, they are not always easy to see. Here's what you can watch for:

• Frequent scratching • Small red bumps on the scalp, neck and shoulders • Lice eggs, also called nits, which look like tiny, oval

shaped, white or clear dots. Nits usually stick at an angle on hair shafts.

If you think someone in your family has head lice, it's best to check everyone in the family. If you're not sure, your family doctor can help diagnose head lice.

Lost Property Now that the colder weather has arrived there are a lot of jumpers without names at lost property. If you are missing a jumper please come to administration and check lost property. Next week all jumpers without names will be put out the front of administration with a sign reading free to a good home. After this all unclaimed items will be washed and given to the P & C for the second hand uniform shop. Thank you to all parents for labelling your child’s / children’s items.

Stage 1/2 2/3F Hello parents and friends! I cannot believe we are almost halfway through Term 2 already! Where has that time gone?

I would like to wish Year 3 a warm congratulations on completing their first round of NAPLAN tests. Students did wonderfully and some even said they really enjoyed doing NAPLAN!

Our class have been participating in the Premier’s Reading Challenge during Quiet Reading time, So far, 18 people in our class have finished the challenge! I cannot believe how many books they have read. Well done 2/3F!

Students have also participated in a brochure competition about the Erina Creek Catchment. Students were asked to create a brochure to inform people in the council area about the catchment area and how to protect it. 2/3F have all worked tirelessly on their brochures and they look AMAZING!

Parents, please ensure that camp payments are up-to-date and that the yellow Life Skills notes have been signed and returned. This is a free program the students will be participating in and it would be beneficial for them.

If you ever have any questions or would love a chat, please don’t hesitate to see me. Working in partnership, Mrs Fares Stage 2 4C Welcome to Week 4!

We have had a very busy 3 weeks in 4C and are looking forward to the rest of the term.

We have been looking at the probability of events happening and different patterns in maths. Students have been experimenting in making patterns with numbers and shapes.

Please ensure that camp payments are up-to-date and notes for the Life Skills program have been returned. We are looking forward to continuing with the Life Skills program this week.

Good luck to Caleb C, Lily G, Keira W, Matilda A, Grace C, Alex F, Nick T and Cooper L who will be part of the Tuggerawong team competing at Wallarah Zone Cross Country this Friday.

Thank you to all those parents who are regularly using SeeSaw as a way of communicating and viewing their child’s work. If you have any questions

Miss Caban Stage 2/3 4/5N Our Year 5 students are breathing a sigh of relief this week as NAPLAN comes to an end. I am very proud of all of them for putting in a fantastic effort and trying their own personal best. Great job Year 5!

In class we have just finished a Maths unit on Chance and Probability. As a final activity students were challenged to design their own board game. The only rule was that it had to incorporate elements of chance and probability. It was great to see students so engaged in the task and using their collaborative skills to work successfully in small groups.

The in-class component of our Public Speaking Competition will be happening in Week 6. Students should start working on their speeches as soon as possible. I will be asking for their topics at the end of this week. If any students need any assistance please encourage them to ask me.

Congratulation to those students who received their Pen Licence last week! Other students keep trying hard and it won’t be long before you get yours too.

Mrs New Stage 3 5/6C Hello Parents and Carers, It is almost half way through the term and we have done so much already!

NAPLAN is behind us and we have so much to look forward to. Our excursion to Canberra is sneaking up on us quickly and preparations for the Farewell are yet to get underway! We have some great fundraisers to undertake before Term 3 so keep your eyes and ears open.

Our text ‘My Place’ is well underway and we are identifying some creative ways that Nadia Wheatley has used punctuation, grammar and sentence structure to convey a message.

When we read it is important for us to read aloud, whether it be to our friends, or family. Once a week we read to each other in pairs or we take turns reading a book in front of the class. This is something that helps us gain a broader understanding of what we are reading.

Coming up to report writing time 5/6C will be participating in various assessment tasks to ensure an accurate overview for Semester 1.

A few reminders of things we need: - Headphones - Tissues - Big smiling faces :D

Ms. Coafield Family relationships and expectations have a major influence on children’s social development. Family relationships set the foundation for children to relate to others. Children learn how to manage relationships by observing the ways that parents, carers and other family members relate to others.

Tips for developing children’s friendship skills

Teach social and emotional skills Teach children social skills such as listening to others, taking turns, making friends and resolving conflict. Emphasise skills for cooperative and respectful relationships and acknowledge children’s efforts to use them.

Use positive discipline Setting reasonable expectations for children’s behaviour, and communicating them clearly and respectfully, sets the tone for cooperation. Being consistent and positive in your approach to discipline communicates to children that they are valued, even if a particular behaviour is not.

Talk about values Read stories that emphasise values with your children. Ask their opinions on whether they think a particular action is respectful, responsible, caring etcetera. Discuss the pros and cons of different kinds of values for promoting effective social relationships. Make talking about values and opinions part of everyday conversation, for example, by talking about things you see on TV.

Capitalise on ‘teachable moments’ When something happens that requires a response which draws on values, it presents a ‘teachable moment’. Ask children to think about what the problem is and what they could do to improve the situation. For example, when feelings have been hurt you could ask your child’s opinion of what the person might be feeling hurt about. Extend your child’s thinking through asking questions like, “How could

you find out what Jo is feeling sad about?” and “What do you think you could do to help?”

Involve children in family discussions and decision making Encouraging children to contribute to family discussions and decision making gives them practice in listening to others’ views and seeing things from different angles. Listening and contributing to family discussions helps children understand what your values are and shows them that their voices are valued. Involving children in these ways in family discussions and decision making promotes respectful and responsible behaviours. Promote a strong sense of identity When parents and carers notice and acknowledge what children do to help, it shows children that their contributions are worthwhile. This gives them a sense of pride and encourages them to ‘do the right thing’. Help children to work out ways to stand up for what they believe in and let them know that you are proud of them when they do. This helps children to build confidence in their own strengths and values.

Supervise media use It is very important for parents and carers to supervise children’s media use and ensure that the things they view are appropriate for their age and level of understanding. When children are repeatedly exposed to violent or inappropriate media images they can see these things as normal. Children often imitate the behaviour they see on TV or on the internet.

Tuggerawong Public School’s Annual Autism Awareness Day

Blue Day- TOMORROW Tuesday, 22 May 2017! We are looking forward to our yummy Cake Stall tomorrow in aid of Autism awareness. Students are asked to wear Blue Mufti and bring in a gold coin donation.

Don’t forget we will be holding a Cake Stall at lunch and recess time. Prices will range from 50c - $2.

If you could bake or buy some treats (cupcakes/biscuits) to donate to our stall that would be terrific. Sweet treats can be delivered to the child’s classroom or dropped in at the canteen tomorrow.

If you are available to help throughout the day that would be great. All money raised will be going toward resources for our students.
