Students in 7H, 8P, and 12 Senior Science have had Ms Barnes as their Science teacher for the last nine weeks. Year 12 has been learning about space science and rockets and in one lesson they used a balloon attached to a string to model the thrust of a rocket. Year 7 was learning about food chains earlier this term and have sprouted some radish seeds and planted them in the garden outside. Lately, Year 7 has been learning about forces and investigated friction by dragging a shoe along different surfaces. Year 8 was learning about rocks earlier in the term and made their own sedimentary rocks from plaster of Paris, clay and sand. More recently they have been learning about the solar system and modelled the Earth and moon with balloons and tennis balls.

During this term Year 9 Drama students have been learning about the theatrical style of Realism. They were introduced to Stanislavski system of creating a realistic character as well as major conventions associated with this theatrical style, including set design. In the last couple of weeks students have been engaged in a challenging task of creating a model set design for an allocated play. Designs were required to be 1:25 scale of Belvoir Upstairs theatre. Students’ outstanding effort, enthusiasm and skills are evident in their final submissions.

The Professor is all of a sudden not so shy, and excited to officially introduce us to his new company – Sir Savage and Lorde Harambe. Although, as with the Professor – it is possible that they could in fact be Ms Savage and Lady Harambe. Time will tell… See below some pictures of the two getting acquainted with some of the boys.

STICK IN SCIENCE
Andy and John holding the (very heavy) Professor Bubanies
This has been a big week of weigh-in also, showing an increase in the Professor’s mass by almost 1 gram, or 50% from the last weigh-in! He is certainly looking bulkier than we are used to seeing, and has developed tattoo like markings on the underside of his abdomen. In other news, we have uncovered the name of the genus and species of these funky phasmids above. They belong to the Ctenomorphodes genus and are of the species C. chronus. We were at first disappointed to discover we did not have a Goliath phasmid but are now excited to have uncovered what the Professor, Savage and Harambe are. This has allowed the students to begin their collaborative group research task to create a species portfolio on the phasmids. We have also included the original Eurycnema goliath to the research task. The task requires the boys to develop a portfolio of information ranging from the phasmid’s specific classification, a dichotomous key that identifies their phasmid from others, labelled diagram of the phasmid; habitat, lifecycle and reproduction of the phasmid and an imaginative story about a day in the life of the phasmid incorporating all of the information obtained from their research. Across the class the students have been allowed to organise their own groups and delegate their roles amongst themselves. We are looking forward to the presentation date in our last Science lesson of the term next week!

PARTNERS IN LEARNING PARENT FEEDBACK SURVEY
This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement. Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements. The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on public computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 22 August and 21 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, however, your responses are very much appreciated. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents Please click on the link below to complete the survey: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/rytp2
In response to Parent feedback and discussion at the P&C earlier in the term, the uniform supplier Pickles will make some changes to the current uniform store arrangements. The following arrangements will commence from the start of Term 4. 1. The Uniform Store staff will change. The new manager will be Stacey Allen. Stacey has
been working with Pickles for over 5 years and currently manages Dulwich High School and SSC Leichhardt Campus.
2. The on site uniform store will change its hours to make it easier for parents to access it before work and for the boys to make purchases at recess. The new hours of operation will be Monday 8:00am - 9:00am. Wednesday 10:00am - 10:40am. 3. Parents will still be able to purchase items online from http://www.picklesschoolwear.com 4. Uniforms can be purchased from Pickles' Marrickville Outlet, Corner Fitzroy and Saywell Streets (entry on Fitzroy), Marrickville. Opening hours: Monday: 12–5 pm, Thursday: 12–5 pm, Saturday: 9–1 pm 5. Most uniform items are still available at Lowes in Burwood. The P&C have formed a subcommittee to continue to look at the provision of uniforms into the future.

Validation of Assessment for Learning & Individual Development (VALID)
Dear Parent or Carer The Validation of Assessment for Learning & Individual Development (VALID) test for Year 8 students will be held between Wednesday 2 November and Friday 11 November 2016. The test takes approximately 70 minutes. The VALID Science 8 test is an interactive, multimedia test completed entirely on a computer.
VALID Science 8 contains multiple choice, short response and extended response tasks that are grouped around real-world issues, including scientific investigations. This is a diagnostic test, with tasks framed on Stage 4 outcomes and essential content in the NSW Science Years K–10 Syllabus. Students will be tested on their:
• knowledge and understanding of science • understanding and skills in the process of scientific investigation • ability to evaluate evidence, make judgements and think critically • ability to access information and communicate scientific ideas
Students also complete a survey about their opinions, attitudes and values about science.
Since students complete VALID Science 8 on a computer, each student needs to bring headphones or earbuds that plug into a school computer. Earbuds for an iPod or portable player are suitable.
If your child has a disability that needs special consideration or has been educated in English for less than one year, please contact your child’s school to discuss special provisions or possible exemption from the test.
Results of the test will be available during Term 1 2017. Information about each student is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that the right to privacy of all students is maintained. A personal report for each student will be sent to parents/carers to describe the science knowledge and skills demonstrated by the student in the test. There will also be information about how your child’s results compare with overall performance of all students in the test.
The principal of your child’s school is able to provide you with more details about the VALID program if you require additional information.
Yours sincerely
Bruce Inwood R/Director, High Performance Department of Education

Accessing Special provisions The need for support, such as reading of texts and variable test display, has been taken into account in the construction of VALID. A range of other provisions can be offered. These are available to students who usually access this type of support in the classroom so that all students have the opportunity to demonstrate what they know and can do in science. Special provisions are for any student who has accommodations that enable the student to work towards the same syllabus outcomes and content as all other students of the same age/Stage and where these accommodations are documented and endorsed by the principal and have the support of the school's Learning Support Team. Note that specific injuries or illnesses of students close to the date of the test may also necessitate access to special provisions.
14
Withdrawal or exemption of students from VALID
VALID should be completed by all students in the relevant cohort at the school. However, some students are eligible to be withdrawn or exempted. Withdrawn students Students may be withdrawn from VALID by their parents/carers. This is a matter for consideration by individual parents/carers in consultation with the principal. Withdrawals are intended to address issues such as religious beliefs and philosophical objections to testing or the use of technology.
15
Exempt students For very few students, participation in VALID might not be appropriate. These students are eligible for exemption. Consideration for exemptions can be given to: students newly arrived in Australia (up to 12 months) from non-English speaking backgrounds students with moderate or severe intellectual disabilities who are supported by a
personalised learning program with restricted access to regular syllabus outcomes and content. These students are unlikely to be accommodated through special provisions (see pages 41 to 45)
students who have a current Disability Confirmation Sheet who cannot be accommodated through special provisions
students with a medical condition that would affect wellbeing and test performance and who cannot be accommodated through special provisions
students attending Stewart House.
Signed consent forms (see next page) are required for students exempted by their parents/carers and the school. The signed form must be kept by the school.
