The pandemic canceled their wedding, so they held it in "Animal Crossing" By Washington Post, adapted by Newsela staff on 04.14.20
Word Count 556
Level 600L
Nintendo’s new game, "Animal Crossing: New Horizons," released on March 20, has become wildly popular. Due to the outbreak of COVID-
19 and social distancing, many people have turned to "Animal Crossing" as a substitute for social events and outings. Photo: Nintendo
Sharmin Asha and Nazmul Ahmed were ready to get married. Then, the coronavirus hit. They
realized that bringing their family and friends together was no longer safe. They pushed the
wedding back to next year.
Asha was disappointed. The couple lives in New Jersey. They tried to move past their
disappointment. They started playing the new Nintendo game, "Animal Crossing: New Horizons."
In the game, you can simulate life. The couple enjoyed their time with the game. Their characters
gathered resources and built their own islands. Then Asha experienced a special surprise.
"Nazmul invited me over to collect resources (on his island)," Asha said. He met her in the game.
There were arrows on the ground. "He told me there was some special in-game event, so we
followed them."
Surprise Beach Wedding

The arrows led her to the beach. Asha found the "Animal Crossing" characters of all of their
friends. They had been waiting for her. Ahmed had planned a surprise beach wedding within the
game.
Asha and Ahmed's actual wedding will still happen later. For now, though, the game has been a
popular replacement for the real world.
Asha and Ahmed's story is becoming more common. People across the world are using "Animal
Crossing." They are re-creating canceled events within the game.
The outbreak of the new coronavirus has stopped a lot of traveling between countries. Events have
been pushed back. People are forced to stay at home. There is no medicine yet for the coronavirus.
Staying away from others helps slow the spread of the illness.
"New Horizons" is the fifth game in the Nintendo series. It was released on March 20. The first
version came out in 2012. The game is very popular. "Animal Crossing" jokes, videos and memes
have flooded the internet.
Dang Ton is a senior in college. He said "Animal Crossing" is the closest many have now to a
normal life. Ton's school may not have a graduation ceremony. He made a video in which his
"Animal Crossing" character got a diploma.
In late March, Evan Latt held his 31st birthday party inside the game. Normally, he would have
hung out with friends in town. Now, though, they are all following social distancing rules. They are
staying at their homes. They are not visiting each other, either. So instead, Latt traveled through
his friends' "Animal Crossing" villages. His friends brought him gifts he can use in the game. They
all hung out in the game.
Latt's friend Aaron Traylor lives in Providence, Rhode Island. He is a commentator for Pokémon
tournaments. He said many of his friends were planning to buy "New Horizons." Since everyone
has to stay home now, Traylor said they are playing it much more than they thought they would.
Hit At The Right Time
"'Animal Crossing' hit at the right time," said Traylor.
Many of the Pokémon tournaments have been postponed. After one was canceled, Traylor re-
created the venue in "Animal Crossing." He got other commentators to join him on it.
Longtime players and new fans agreed that "New Horizons" came at the perfect time. It gives them
a deeper connection with their loved ones who are far away.
"Even though it wasn't in real life, in times like this it's important to be connected with those that
are close to you," said Asha.

Dorothea Lange used photography to make an ugly world beautiful By Washington Post, adapted by Newsela staff on 04.15.20
Word Count 625

Image 1. "Migratory Cotton Picker, Eloy, Arizona" (November 1940) by Dorothea Lange. Photo: The Museum of Modern Art, New York
Dorothea Lange was an American photographer. She is most known for her work during the Great
Depression.
In 1929, the American market collapsed. Banks and businesses closed. About one-fourth of
Americans did not have jobs. This period of time was called the Great Depression. It lasted until
the early 1940s.
Things got worse. In the 1930s, the central part of the United States experienced a drought. A lot
of farmers lived and grew crops there. They had to leave to find a new job. The Farm Security
Administration was a government agency at the time. In 1935, it paid Lange to take pictures of this
area and the people there.
An exhibition of Lange's photos opened on February 9 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York
City. The museum is called the MoMA, for short. The exhibit is titled, "Dorothea Lange: Words &
Pictures."
This article is available at 5 reading levels at https://newsela.com.
Most Famous Photograph
Lange's most famous photograph is "Migrant Mother." It shows a woman who, while tired, is also
beautiful. Her beauty is not often talked about. Rather, Lange's photographs are surrounded by
words. They are often tied to a larger conversation about poverty and despair in America during
the Depression.
"Migrant Mother" was made in 1936. The picture was not known by that title until 1952. The
woman in the image is Florence Owens Thompson. She was not named until 1978. She is a symbol
of American suffering and strength. She is also Cherokee, a Native American tribe, which was not
stated for tens of years.
Words are tied to photographs all the time. However,
that has not always been the case. Some believe good
photographs should not need explaining. Photography
is art. Art is independent. Therefore, photographs
should be able to stand alone.
Strong Images
Lange made some of the strongest images over the
past 100 years. Even though her images were so
strong, Lange believed words can always strengthen a
photograph.
"All photographs — not only those that are so called
'documentary' ... can be fortified by words," Lange
said. Lange's images brought attention to social
problems. They often needed to be strengthened
against a lack of interest or disbelief.
Many of Lange's images appeared in magazines or
books called phototexts. She also took field notes
while photographing. In the 1930s, she worked with her husband, Paul Schuster Taylor. He was an
economist. They reported information to the government about people's lives during the Great
Depression.
Images can also be altered to change their truth. In 1940, MoMA printed "Migrant Mother" in a
news report. The picture appeared much lighter than other versions. The woman looks white. The
printing feels like it is erasing Thompson's racial identity as a Native American.
Knew What Makes A Photograph Interesting
Lange knew what makes a face interesting. The beauty in her photographs creates a desire to know
more about them. Beauty, for Lange, was foundational to photography. She always found strong
visual images.
One haunting photo is "Tractored Out, Childress County, Texas." In it, an empty house sits alone
in a field. The picture shows the suffering of farmers during the Dust Bowl. It is also a beautiful
image.

Lange once said, "The camera is an instrument that
teaches people how to see without a camera." She
could make perfect images. The picture, though,
always had a greater meaning. The camera could help
one see both beauty and ugliness in the world.
Many photographers feared that words might distract
you from the photograph. Lange understood that was
exactly the point.

Herd of goats takes over deserted resort in Britain amid lockdown By The World, adapted by Newsela staff on 04.15.20
Word Count 458
Level 410L
Image 1. Mountain goats roam the streets of LLandudno, Wales, on March 31, 2020. The goats normally live on the rocky Great Orme but
are occasional visitors to the seaside town. A local councillor said the herd was drawn this time by the lack of people and tourists due to the
COVID-19 outbreak and quarantine measures. Photo: Christopher Furlong/Getty Images
A herd of goats invaded a small town in Wales. The town of Llandudno is in Wales. It is on the
coast of the Irish Sea. The spread of the coronavirus has forced everyone inside. The town's streets
have been deserted.
The coronavirus is a new illness. Scientists have not seen it before. It started in December 2019. It
has spread across the globe. There is no medicine for it yet. People around the world are practicing
social distancing. It helps slow the spread of the illness. Social distancing means staying at home.
It also means staying 6 feet away from other people.
The goats normally roam free. They live on land nearby. For three days at the end of March, they
took a little trip. They wandered into Llandudno. They ate plants and flowers.
Wales is part of the United Kingdom. Like many countries, the United Kingdom is affected by the
coronavirus. There are rules for social distancing. Shops and schools are closed. The government is

asking everyone to stay home.
The streets of Llandudno are very quiet. The goats wandered around. Nothing bothered them.
The Goats Don't Like People
Andrew Stuart lives in Llandudno. His job is to make videos. He took photos and videos of the
goats. He said the goats avoid people.
"You're not going to come close to them. They don't like you," Mr. Stuart said. "Because of the
lockdown, there are no people, no cars, no noise. There is nothing to stop them."
The goats get to explore places they have not explored
before.
Carol Marubbi lives in town, too. She said that before,
the goats did not often come into town. Now, there are
so few people around.
"I think they're feeling a bit lonely, " Ms. Marubbi
said. "They have come to look around."
Goats Are Popular On Social Media
The herd has about 150 goats. They are well-known in the area.
"I'm a big fan," Ms. Marubbi said. "I love them because they are characters."
Millions of people are stuck at home now. Many are sharing funny photos and videos online.
People put photos and video of the goats on social media. The posts were very popular.
Mr. Stuart put photos of the goats on Twitter. His Twitter posts are very popular. The goats are a
big hit. He said he is known as the man who stares at goats.
"I did not think that this would happen," Mr. Stuart said. "I don't think anyone could have guessed
this."
Mr. Stuart said the goat event is weird. He said it is also funny.
The Road Not Taken
Robert Frost - 1874-1963
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference.
Remember
Christina Rossetti (1830-1894)
Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann’d:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
