Recycling Not Now...But Probably Later

The Recycling Survey generated a significant amount of interest. We received questions, comments, and a substantial number of residents returned the surveys. Now, we know that the majority of our residents are currently AGAINST recycling in Terranova West at this time. Some residents do not like the thought of having a second wheeled trash/recycling receptacle, but most are opposed due to the increased HOA annual fees that would be incurred due to recycling.

In assessing what decision to make on recycling, we also have to consider the 2013 Budget issues. As we have previously indicated, TNW POA will complete 2012 with approximately $140,000 in cash reserves, or about $60,000 less than what we consider to be appropriate for a HOA of our size. Consequently, we will need to use 2013 to begin rebuilding our cash reserves towards the fiscally responsible level of $200,000.

So when the Board considers the resident survey results, the current state of the recycling industry, and our 2013 budgetary issues, we have decided to not restart recycling in Terranova West at this time.

That being said, WE DO BELIEVE that recycling will be part of our future in Terranova West. Our recycling research has shown that the recycling industry continues to make improvements and innovations, which are reducing the overall cost of recycling. At the same time, traditional trash services continue to experience cost increases from landfills, labor, fuel, and equipment. For these reasons, we expect recycling to become more cost competitive with traditional trash services within the next few years.

Your Board will continue to monitor this cost relationship, and bring you those services when they are competitively priced.

Please feel free to call myself or anyone else on the Board with any questions or clarifications.

-Arthur Oden

Klein Collins Girl Scout Earns Lifesaving Medal

"On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country; To help people at all times; And to live by the Girl Scout Law." This was more than a promise to 14-year-old Rachel Piper, who was awarded with the Lifesaving Medal of Honor by the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC) for rescuing her mom during a jet skiing accident.

While at a family's lake house in Louisiana during the summer of 2011, Rachel's mother, Laura Piper, was driving a jet ski that was pulling Rachel on a knee board. After a brief glance to check on her daughter, Mrs. Piper turned back to find that she was too close to the bank filled with bushes and trees and the jet ski came to a halt. On impact, the handle bar struck Mrs. Piper in the chest, broke her wrist, and rendered her unconscious in the water. Rachel, unharmed, immediately swam to her mom's aide.
