Reyes made history by fir- ing the 17th televised 300 game in the 47-year history of the Tour in the semifinals Sunday at Taylor Lanes, then defeated Wes Malott, 255-238, for his first career title. The 33-year-old from San Bruno, Calif., knocked off PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III, 300-215, in the semifinals, be- coming the first bowler since Mika Koivuniemi in the Cam- bridge Credit Classic in Windsor Locks, Conn., on Dec. 17, 2003, to be perfect on TV. Reyes also became the third bowler — and the first since C.K. Moore in 1996 - to shoot 300 on his way to his first ca- reer title. Moore’s 300 game also came against Bohn. After firing the 300 game, Reyes refocused to knock off the top-seeded Malott, clinching the win with a strike on his first ball in the 10th frame. “I did have some shaky legs trying to finish a 300 game for the first time since I can remem- ber,” said Reyes, who earned $25,000 and an exemption for 2007-08. “I had to bring it back though after that shot. Business is business and Wes is a great bowler so I knew I had to shoot one more big game.” Reyes had a difficult 2005- 06 season which included the passing of his father midway through the season. He finished just 51st in the 2005-06 PBA World Point Rankings, but earned his exemption for 2006- 07 by wining a special event, “The Final Frame presented by the Denny’s PBA Tour.” “I did it for dad. He was here Friday and he’s here now. I can just feel it,” Reyes said. “I’ve worked so hard over my eight years on Tour and to get to this point is amazing. I felt like it was just a matter of time. Reyes came into the steplad- der finals as the second seed and took on Bohn after he defeated fourth-seed Mike Edwards, 252- 203, to advance to the semifinal. After a 3-7 split and an open in the fourth frame, Bohn re- bounded with seven consecutive strikes to clinch the win. Edwards defeated Mike Scroggins, 244-222, in the first stepladder match. Malott took home $13,000 for second, Bohn earned $6,500 for third, while Edwards and Scroggins earned $5,500 and $5,000 for fourth and fifth, re- spectively. The Denny’s PBA Tour moves to Cheektowaga, N.Y., for the 2006 Etonic Championship Nov. 8-12 at AMF Thruway Lanes. The nationally televised ESPN finals take place Sunday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. EST. Tony Reyes USBC Elects Constantino Marchione to the Hall of Fame by Ed Abakumoff USBC Hall of Fame commit- tee elected Constantino (Connie) Marchione, well known deaf bowling writer, to the United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame. The committee met this past Monday. The next day after I had got- ten home from bowling in my Tuesday morning league, I be- gan to watch the PBA bowling that I had recorded. A short time later my phone rang. The per- son on the other end asked, “Is this Ed?” and I said “yes.” He then told me that he was Jerry Schneider of USBC communica- tions and that he needed some assistance and for me to keep a secret. I replied “Sure, what’s up?” Jerry proceeded to tell me that Connie had been elected to the USBC Hall of Fame yester- day by the Hall of Fame Com- mittee. I was elated and inter- rupted and said ‘WOW, that is fantastic, Connie will be over- joyed to hear this.” He also said that Mike Carroll, USBC Presi- dent, wants to officially tell him personally. Jerry told me that he needed to know what would be the best way to notify him? He sug- gested email and I told he can call via telephone relay service. I explained to him what it was and how it worked. I asked Donna, my wife, for the relay phone number since I couldn’t remember it. I gave Jerry the number and he told me that Connie will get the call that af- ternoon or the next day. I asked him about the induction cer- emony and was told that it will be in March of next year in Nash- ville, Tennessee. Before hanging up I said “ I will see Connie this Sunday and I will keep my mouth zipped ‘til then. Connie Marchione is being inducted into the USBC Hall of Fame for his Meritorious Ser- vice to the sport of Bowling. He has been involved in bowling in many different ways for over 60 years. His specialty has been Deaf bowling. He has been a bowling writer for about the same amount of time. He was one of the pioneers in the for- mation of the National Deaf Bowling Association and the Pacific Coast Deaf Bowling As- sociation. He has served as an officer in both organizations and is a member of their Hall of Fame. He initiated the masters tourna- ment in both previously men- tioned associations following the old ABC Masters format. The PCDBA Masters is named in his honor. Over the years he got deaf teams together to go to the ABC national tournaments. He did the same for the California State Men’s Tournament. He ran the tryouts for the deaf USA bowl- ing team for the World Games for the Deaf (WGD). Bowling was accepted as a sport by the WGD in 1997. Connie was re- sponsible for forming the pow- erful record breaking team that went to Rome, Italy in 2001 for the WGD. The Rome team ran away with a Gold Medal in ev- ery bowling event. The WGD officially changed its name to the Deaflympics in 2001 I believe that Connie’s baby is the Southern California Deaf Travel League. It is in its 47th year and Connie has been its only secretary/treasurer. Connie had an award named after him, for recognizing the achievements of a deaf bowler in the previous year by the Southern California Bowling Writers. In recent years Connie has had other awards bestowed on him. In 2005 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at the ABC conven- tion, he received the Rip Van Winkle Award by the Bowling Writers Association of America (BWAA). Last year he was hon- ored by the California Women’s Bowling Association with a Dis- tinguished Service award. This past June he was surprised by the BWAA with a Remo Picchietti Humanitarian Award. This USBC Hall of Fame in- duction should certainly be the apex of Connie’s esteemed ca- reer. He was always encourag- ing deaf bowlers to be the best they can be. This writer is one that took his encouragement to heart. When ever there was a deaf bowling event, he was usu- ally there, either to write about it or get it off the ground. Mr. Marchione is well known through out the sport of bowl- ing both hearing and deaf. Natu- rally he is known in the BWAA. Many PBA members and present Hall of Famers know him. So my friend, Connie, will be in good company when he is inducted into the USBC Hall of Fame. World CupCARACAS, Venezuela—As

competitors walked in for theopening ceremonies of the 42ndQubicaAMF World Cup on Sat-urday, employees were still fe-verishly working to complete amassive modernization of theCentro Nacional de BowlingMampote.

The start of the World Cup,one of the top internationalevents that has attracted 94countries, was even pushed backby a day so the installation of40 new lanes, pinsetters andscoring units could be com-pleted.

With the finishing touchesfinally done, the players took tothe lanes Sunday for the officialpractice sessions.

“It’s nice to throw some shotsand get a feel for the lanes,” saidTeam USA’s Dan Patterson ofBuffalo, N.Y. “I’ve got a goodlook, and I’m more than readyfor this event to get going.”

The final decision to hold theWorld Cup in Caracas asplanned was finally made a littleover a month ago when organiz-ers were assured the venuewould be completed.

With a tight schedule, therewas no time for the lanes to betested in advance, so when thewomen started their official prac-tice Sunday morning, they werethe first to throw shots on manyof the lanes.

“I can say that I was the firstone to ever throw a shot on lane35 of this bowling center,” jokedTeam USA’s Diandra Asbaty ofChicago. “This is the first timeI’ve ever bowled on a brand newinstallation, so it will be inter-esting to see how things go thisweek.”

The World Cup begins withall competitors bowling eightgames of qualifying on Monday,Tuesday and Wednesday beforethe field is cut to the top 24 menand top 24 women.

After eight additional gamesThursday, the field is narrowedto the top eight in each divisionfor round-robin match play. Thetop three men and top threewomen advance to Friday’s tele-vision finals.

Asbaty will look to continuea wave of success for the UnitedStates at the World Cup. LyndaBarnes won the event last year, while Shannon Pluhowsky tookthe title in 2002 and 2004.Patterson will try to become thefirst U.S. champion since PatrickHealey Jr. won in 1995.

    Columbia Cornerby Gary Kelley

“My ball isn’t finishing anymore”. “ My ball is dead in thewater”. “My reactive ball haslost all it’s hook”. How manytimes have you or your team-mates made these statements. It’s a common theme that is go-ing around bowling centers thesedays, but one that can be cured.

Today’s reactive and particleballs are very porous and thusabsorb a lot of oil and dirt fromthe lanes. The reason a new re-active or particle ball rolls sowell is that the shell is fresh andit can absorb oil into the cover. This absorption gets the oil offthe outside of the cover and al-lows the fresh shell to grip thelane. If today’s performanceballs weren’t absorbent, the oilwould stay on the outside coverof the ball and the ball wouldskid much farther down the lanebefore reacting.

When your ball starts losingreaction it’s because the poresin the shell are full of oil and dirtas well as broken down plasti-cizer. Plasticizer is the materialshells are made of, and when thisplasticizer starts to break downinside the ball, it migrates towardthe cover filling the pores fromthe inside out. The combinationof this plasticizer filling thepores along with the oil and dirtthe ball has picked up overgames of use, causes your ballto “die” and lose hook.

Proper maintenance of yourball is imperative today in orderto maximize your scoring abil-ity. Columbia has invented aproduct known as CPR(Coverstock Performance Re-suscitation) that will restorehook to reactive and particleballs. CPR is a patented syn-thetic polymer (powder) sus-pended in a water base. Thispowder acts like little spongesthat absorb oil, dirt and plasti-cizer out of the pores of yourball.

This product is extremelyeasy to use. It comes packagedin a 2 oz. plastic bottle with aplastic bag and a plastic tie. Youfirst dampen the surface of yourball, then put it into the plasticbag. You then tie the bag closedand do a little “Shake a Bake”routine, which distributes thepowder around the surface of theball. Set the ball aside for a littleover an hour, and it’s done. Thepowder has successfully ab-sorbed the built up oil, dirt andplasticizer from the shell, restor-

ing the ball to it’s “like new” re-action.

How often should you dothis ? As soon as you start tosee your ball lose reaction, orafter approximately 50 to 60games of bowling. Some balls willhold up longer than others be-fore they need a treatment, butbelieve me it will happen even-tually to all reactive and particleballs. I believe you should do thisprocess at least twice a year, andonce combine it with a resurfaceto fully restore the shell to boxfinish.

Using the proper polish onyour ball is also a very impor-tant part of maintaining a highscoring level of play. Bowlingball polishes are actually liquidsandpaper, and each has a dif-ferent effect on your balls ap-pearance and its gripping char-acteristics. At Columbia we makeDegree Ball Polish, a polish thatcomes in four different grits. Youcan purchase this polish in ei-ther 320, 600, 1200 or 2000 grit.

The 320 grit polish is de-signed for oily lanes. It will leaveyour ball with a dull, rough fin-ish that will increase the ballstraction in oil. This polish canbe used on particle, reactive andurethane balls.

The 600 grit polish is de-signed for medium to oily lanes. This polish will give your ball aslight glaze, toward the dullerside, and help the ball grip bet-ter on medium, oily lanes with-out rolling too early. This polishcan be used on reactive, particle, urethane and polyester balls.

The 1200 grit polish is formedium to dry conditions. Thispolish will give your ball a highluster finish, create a more skidsnap ball reaction and increasethe back end finish. This polishcan be used on reactive, particle, urethane and polyester balls.

The 2000 grit polish is pri-marily to be used on your ballfor dry conditions. This polishwill create a high luster on theball along with a slightly slip-pery surface feel. This workswell on dry conditions as wellas for bowlers with slower ballspeeds.

Remember, you can alter thesurface of any ball to give you aball reaction that will be bettersuited for a lane condition thatgives you trouble.

    Up Your Averageby Rolf Gauger

Instruction to Help Raise Your Scores

Checking over last month’sarticle, you may wonder why itis that certain advanced tech-niques can be called fundamen-tals. After all, fundamentals areusually categorized as basics, aren’t they?

Well, think about it for aminute; advanced bowling tech-niques come in two maincategories…those, which abso-lutely must be done in order forsuccess to be possible…andthose about which there is achoice. It is those must be doneones, which come under theheading of advanced fundamen-tals.

In other words, your particu-lar bowling style is yourown…and styles often differgreatly from bowler to bowler. This is why the best coachesusually have a policy of neverchanging a bowler’s style, butrather improving that bowler’sgame within the style the bowleralready has! And even if you area low average bowler, you stillhave your own style.

This is also why, whenwatching the PBA finals on TV,you’ll often see even the world’stop bowlers scoring within a fewpins of each other, while look-ing very different from eachother during play.

So here are some more ofthese items, added to the onesfrom last month’s article.

    Matching Ball Speedand Revs

This is a subject, which fewbowlers pay enough attention to,or even know about, includingeven some professionals…but itis a must.

Why? Well, the answer be-comes obvious when the win-ning (or losing) records of cer-tain professionals are considered.

Here are just a couple of ex-amples. One excellent (nowformer) PBA pro is KellyCoffman. An outstanding bowlerin many ways, and highly intel-ligent, Coffman, who did somecashing on tour and made the TVshow several times, never wona tournament. In the opinion ofsome top coaches, the reason forthis was because he consistentlyput too many revs on his ballfor his ball speed. In otherwords, revs and speed did notmatch!

“How can this be?” you mayask.

The answer is simple. Asmany of you may know, the revrates of professionals are re-corded in r.p.m.s (revolutions perminute). The average PBA tour-ing pro is in a range somewherebetween 425 and 475 r.p.m.s.Their ball speeds are somewherein the range of 18 to 21 miles perhour, which breaks down tosomewhere between approxi-mately 15 to21 revs from releaseto impact.

It turns out that KellyCoffman generated more revsthan anyone else on tour at thetime…about 600 rpms…whilehis ball speed, somewhere in thenormal range, was too slow forthat high revving ball. So his revsand ball speed didn’t match. That, according to some experts, made it difficult for him to con-trol the ball’s hook. So his ballgenerated too many revs to keepit from over-hooking.

Coffman, a highly in-telligent man, went on to designbowling balls for a major manu-

What is Your BIQ?(Bowling Improvement Quotient)?

Conclusion More on the Importanceof Advanced Fundamentals

facturer. Therefore, it certainlywasn’t stupidity that caused theproblem. Since I never met Mr.Coffman, I can merely state whathas been reported, but that’s thestory as I’ve heard it.

A Greater Success StoryThe highly successful PBA

champion, Robert Smith, on theother hand, often generates evenmore revs that Coffman…over650 r.p.m.s on many of hisshots, according to reports.

So how can Smith win, whenCoffman couldn’t? Simple…Smith is capable of throwing theball faster than any pro ontour…often in the range of 27plus m.p.h. on many shots...which simply means that Smithis successfully matching ballspeed to revs, thus generatingacceptable ball control on thelanes. (I’ve timed Smith at nearly30 mph, but that was on astraight spare shot.)

Smith formerly controlled hisrev rate by having often usedwhat is called a Sarge Easterdrilled ball. This is a ball the greatbowler of the past, Sarge Easter, often used…drilled fingertip forthe middle finger, but conven-tional for the ring finger. Sincethe ring finger is normally con-sidered to be the revving finger, this slows the rev rate whenneeded. If you watch recordingsof some of Smith’s past tourna-ments carefully, you’ll notice heused this type of ball much ofthe time.

Last year however, I noticedthat Smith has “softened” hishand somewhat during the re-lease. When I mentioned this tohim during a tournament, he ac-knowledged that this is helpinghim control his revs more effec-tively, thus allowing him to goback to a normal fingertip ball.Smith has won some prestigioustournaments since then.

My friend Palmer Fallgren, aPBA champion of some yearsago, as well as Team USA’sformer head coach, was thetour’s statistician for some time. While I’m sure others wereaware of the importance of rev/speed ball matching, Fallgrenwas the first to write about it inthe pages of Bowling ThisMonth magazine, a few yearsago.

    Checking YourOwn Rev Rate

Buy some one inch widewhite tape at the drug store. Putabout a 4" strip of it on yourball at an angle just above thering finger hole, as shown in theillustrations. Then throw yourstrike shot a few times and countthe revs of the tape from releaseto pocket impact (or have afriend count them). If your revcount is anywhere from around13, 14 to about 19, you arematched. If it is less than 13, youneed to add revs (see lastmonth’s issue) or slow downyour ball speed. If your rev countis 20 or more, you need to eitherincrease ball speed or slow downthe revs. Some Advanced Fundamentals1 – Eliminate Overturning

the BallThis is probably the second

most common problem bowlershave during the last part of theswing…the follow through!

It begins during the release, where over 90% of bowlers turnthe hand too early! This, then, results in the hand and forearm

overturning. Result? At the fin-ish, the hand is in a “knucklesup” position and the arm has“chicken winged”! That scenariocreates several problems. 1) anoverturned (spun) ball, 2) a weakball, 3) a pulled shot and 4) in-consistency.

Had enough? Here’s how to fix it: When

starting your downswing, comedown by leading with the lasttwo fingers of your hand, all theway to the release point! Thisallows your hand to stay behindthe ball long enough so it won’tturn too early. Remember, youwant the ball to turn on the lane, not in your hand.

Then, as you release the ball, turn your hand only enough tobring the thumb up to 12 o’clock.Turning the thumb around anyfarther is the common trouble, which seems almost impossibleto avoid for most bowlers.

But there’s an answer, andhere it is: I call it “Hitch-Hik-ing”.

What you do, is this: At thevery end of your follow throughmotion, imagine you are tryingto hitch a ride on the highway. You know what I mean, snapyour thumb toward about oneo’clock or so (left handers to-ward about 11 o’clock, as if youwere hitching a ride in England.)

This works, as long as youdon’t do it too early during theswing. Remember…at the end ofthe follow through. Do it tooearly and you’ll kill the hook. Itmay take a bit of practice, but itworks, because this way, if youdo overturn your hand a bit, youcan recover…and throw a muchmore powerful strike ball!

2 - Pocket SpottingThe art of watching the ball’s

behavior at the pocket is of ex-treme importance. Watch to seeat what angle the ball hits thepocket. Why? Because withoutenough “entry angle”, the ballover deflects off the head pin anda standing ten pin is the result (7pin for left handers). So…watching the ball at thepocket is critical.

If you notice your ball hit-ting the pocket too flat, it maymean that you didn’t put enoughhook action onto the ball duringyour release. Or, it may be youare throwing the ball too closeto the middle of the lane, wherethere’s too much oil to allow theball to hook (remember, oil is likeice…the ball won’t hook wherethe lane is slippery). So, sincethere’s less oil near the gutters, your answer might be to put youmark somewhere between thefirst and second arrows, whereit is drier and the ball will hookmore.

If you adjust your mark, you’ll also have to adjust yourfeet in the same direction some-what. How much, you’ll haveto figure out during the next shotor two, of course. Anyway, watching the ball at the pocketis the answer to discoveringmany problems, which are usu-ally easy to fix, once you do it.Too many bowlers watch thepins, which is a beginner’s mis-take.

    So…watch the ball, then thepocket!

by Connie MarchioneYou have read in this paper or seen it on bowl.com website that

I was elected to the USBC Hall of Fame, an honor which I did notexpect to be in, in my lifetime. I was shocked and elated wheninformed of this great honor by USBC President Michael Carroll. Idid not know I was a candidate and want to thank all that areinvolved in getting my name nominated.

However there were great deaf leaders/bowlers unfortunatelydeceased the real pioneers of deaf bowling, Thomas Hinchey, HermanCahen, James Ellerhorst and Cortland Greenwald who should behonored first. If it were not for them, I may not be writing thisarticle. Till they get in, meantime I will share my Hall of Fame honorwith them.
