GREENDALE—When Jun- ior Team USA’s P.J. Haggerty and Stefanie Nation return to the World Youth Championships in a few weeks, they personally will notice the growth of bowl- ing worldwide — more coun- tries, more competitors and more challengers. Haggerty and Nation, who will be competing in their final events as Junior Team USA members, lead a strong United States contingent into the 2006 World Tenpin Bowling Associa- tion World Youth Champion- ships, scheduled for July 22-29 in Berlin, Germany. This year’s World Youth Championships, which have been held biannually since 1990, will feature 48 countries — a dramatic increase from the 29 that competed at the 2004 event in Guam. “There definitely are a lot more good players now,” said Haggerty, a 21-year-old Weimar, Calif., native who has been a part of Junior Team USA since 2004. “We should be the deeper, more experienced team there. How- ever, we can’t take anything for granted.” Haggerty will be joined by fellow Junior Team USA mem- bers David Lange, 23, of Stevensville, Mich., Ivan Miyasato, 23, of Aiea, Hawaii, and Matt O’Grady, 19, of South Amboy, N.J. Nation, a 22-year-old Miami native, will be joined by Amanda Burgoyne, 21, of Newport, Junior Team USA Ready To Face Challengers At 2006 World Youth Championships Minn., Samantha Linder, 20, of Winter Haven, Fla., and Michelle Quirk, 21, of Roseville, Calif., on Junior Team USA girls’ side. Nation, the women’s colle- giate Player of the Year from the University of Central Florida last season, helped lead Junior Team USA to the girls team gold medal in 2004. She also took home silver medals in doubles and Masters as Junior Team USA captured eight medals — the most among any country competing. “We need to go into this open-minded,” said Nation, who recently finished tied for 32nd at the USBC Queens and won three consecutive U.S. Junior Amateur titles from 2003-05. “We want to win gold, but we know it’s not going to be an easy task. We definitely have a chal- lenge out there.” Haggerty, the men’s colle- giate Player of the Year the past two seasons at Fresno State, brought back a silver medal in boys doubles from the 2004 World Youth Championships. He believes experience in a team environment will end up benefit- ing Junior Team USA’s represen- tatives, seven of whom have col- lege bowling on their resume. “Having team experience will help us out,” Haggerty said about Junior Team USA, which also features six multi-year team members. “We can make moves off each other and communicate Victorville Bowlers Host Bowl-A-Thon For Elena Karlen VICTORVILLE — Bowlers at Victor Bowl were saddened to hear of Elena Karlen’s tragic ruptured cerebral aneurysm in June. The California Bowling Writ-ers were out in force at the 2006CWBA Convention’s ProductFair with their usual Dice Gamewith tons of raffle gifts to be wonas well as the new addition ofGrab Bags that were a hit. Youcould join CBW and go away awinner! Circus Circus, CBW’sLuncheon sponsor, had theirtable right next to CBW’s pro-viding information on accommo-dations and offering a fun, ring-toss game, which, you wouldthink would be right up abowler’s alley. Many tried theirluck throwing the three ringsfrom a mere 4ft. away trying tohit the peg and win their choiceof a stuffed animal. Many wonbut plenty missed!

The fun poured over to theCBW annual Luncheon, withRingMaster Joan Romeo at thehelm who welcomed nearly 100CBW members and guests. Theevent took place on Saturday,May 20, 2006, in Sacramento atthe Holiday Inn. To set the at-mosphere, attendees weregreeted by “Kathy the Clown”(Kathy Watson/CBWWebmaster & Director) whowelcomed everyone with a bagof peanuts and a satin bag filledwith goodies!

Following lunch, a raffle wasconducted by CBW PresidentAgnes Duffy. Circus Circusprovided an array of items forthe raffle, as well as RobinRomeo, USBC, and new CBWmember, Joan Scharsch, includ-ing a Storm bowling ball donatedby Dave Symes/Storm BowlingProducts (Sonija Caron was thelucky winner!).

Before our speaker was in-troduced, several dignitarieswere recognized which includedJohn Berglund, Executive Direc-tor/Bowling Proprietors Assoc.of America and JenniferCunningham, Director of Sales& Marketing for Circus Circus.Jennifer drew for two 3-day/2-night stays at Circus Circus andthe winners were Betty Russell,San Jose and Colleen Becker,Granada. Eloise Cottrell, CBW PastPresident & Awards Chairman, announced the winner of theCBW 2006 Profile Award. BetteAddington of Bakersfield wasthe winner for her article “FirstWoman to Win State WheelchairBowling Tournament”.

Our special guest/speaker,Keith Hamilton, took to thestage and shared his experiencesboth as President of Luby Pub-lications, which publishesBowler’s Journal and other pub-lications, and his experiencesleading up to his present job.

Bowler’s International is 93years old and the oldest bowlingmagazine. It is publishedmonthly. Among Luby’s mostrecent ventures is Pro ShopOperator which Hamilton isworking on with John Berglund/BPAA. One of the goals of thispublication is “turning the ca-sual bowlers into leaguebowlers”. Another Luby publi-cation is US Bowler.

Hamilton then gave some in-sight on how he came to be thePresident of Luby Publications.Believe it or not, he admitted to

Live From The CWBA Convention WeekendCalifornia Bowling Writers’ Three-RingCircus Theme With Luncheon Featuring

Ring Master Keith Hamiltonjust taking up bowling as a sportthree years ago to “understandbowlers better”. While growingup, he was exposed to bowlingas his father owned a center inSt. Charles, LA. But he concen-trated on football, basketball andbaseball as a youth. As a strug-gling hopeful, Keith said he waslucky enough to be recognizedby Morton Luby, former ownerof Luby Publishing, who wassmitten with him, paid for himto go to college—and then, hiredhim! He stressed the key to hissuccess is “partnerships haveevolved and partnerships are thekey”. He also left us stating thatthe “merger is good for the bowl-ing industry.”

Luby purchased Bowler’sJournal in 1994. “BJ”, as it isknown to most, was publishing19 issues per year at the time.Today, Bowler’s Journal pub-lishes 52 issues per year.

The CBW annual meetingwas held following the luncheon.Elections were held and MaryLynly, Roseville, was elected thenew CBW President, BetteAddington, Bakersfield — 2nd

VP, Tina Martin, Novato —Treasurer, Kathy Watson, Rich-mond — Director #1 North andMarianne Evans, Simi Valley —Director #2 South. These posi-tions will take effect August 1st.

CBW is always looking forways to generate new membersand get bowlers interested inwriting about bowling. Eachyear CBW offers two opportu-nities for members to submittheir articles in their annual writ-ing contests—Profile Award andThe Golden Quill. The 2007topic for The Golden Quillaward will be “Traveling to aTournament” and eligible articlesmust be written and publishedbefore December 31, 2006. TheCBW website will gladly acceptthese articles for publication.

The California Bowling Writ-ers (CBW), formed in 1998, isopen to all California bowlingjournalists, promoters and sup-porters of the sport of bowling.

The purpose of the organi-zation is to encourage and edu-cate both members and non-members in communicationthrough print, promotion and useof electronic media. Thursday, July 13, 2006Page 6 BOWLING NEWS

I’ve known Glenn Allison fora long time. Like, since 1955.That’s when Allison was votedthe Southern California Bowlerof the Year, and I was a sportswriter writing about bowling forthe old Los Angeles Mirror.

That same year Allison tookoff for Chicago, where he joinedthe famed Pabst team. A coupleof years later he hooked up withSteve Nagy’s Falstaffs in St.Louis. After Nagy’s death, BillyWelu became the new captain.

Allison’s career really tookoff at that point. He became aPBA charter member in 1958 andwent on to capture six titles.Allison also collected four ABCeagles plus 10 other top-10 fin-ishes. This past March 18-19,in the USBC Open Champion-ships Tournament in CorpusChristi, the smooth-strokingright-hander became only theninth bowler to eclipse the100,000 pinfall mark.

His crowning achievement onthe lanes, however, came on thenight of July 1, 1982, whenAllison recorded his remarkable900 series. It was the first timeany bowler had rolled three con-secutive 300 games in sanctionedleague play.

The news traveled fast. Thenext day the ABC’s BurtKellerman, Orange County Bowl-ing Assn. secretary BobRamirez and western regionalABC Director Ken Knapp wereall at La Habra “300” Bowl inLa Habra, Calif.—just east ofWhittier—to check the lanes. Iwas also there.

As every bowling aficionadoknows, Allison’s 900 was notapproved by the ABC becauseof noncomplying lane condi-tions. The three officials—Kellerman, Ramirez andKnapp—all agreed that “underABC Article 7, Section 3 of theABC Rule Book, the lanes werenot dressed in accordance withrules established by the delegateswho attend the annual ABCConvention.”

It didn’t matter thatAllison—widely known now as“Mr. 900”—was bowling in anABC-sanctioned center, on sanc-tioned lanes and against sanc-tioned pins while using a sanc-tioned Columbia bowling ball.

Nor did it matter that threeyears earlier, in 1979, Allison hadbeen inducted into the ABC Hallof Fame. (In 1984, Allison wasvoted into the PBA Hall ofFame.)

Everything was sanctioned atLa Habra “300” Bowl except forAllison’s 900. A lot of SouthernCalifornians—and others across

Ten Pin Slantsby Joe Lyou

the country—were very upsetby the ABC’s decision. I still am.

Allison appealed…but itwas to no avail, for it was likespitting against the wind.

All this was brought to theforefront recently when a Mil-waukee-area bowler namedMark Wukoman rolled the ninth900 series—which was quicklyapproved by the USBC.Wukoman, 50, also was recog-nized by the USBC as “the old-est bowler to shoot a 900 se-ries.” Wrong!

Allison, who was born onMay 22, 1930 was exactly 52years and 40 days old when hefired his 900 at La Habra. But,unfortunately, it’s another recordthat won’t be recognized by theUSBC. Shafted again!

* * * *The Glenn Allison story

continues: The influentialBowlers Journal Internationalmagazine recently came up with

a new award. The first re-cipient was Allison, who waspresented the award by BJI edi-tor Jim Dressel at the swankColumbia Dinner during the2006 BWAA (Bowling WritersAssn. of America) Conventionat the Las Vegas Hilton.

Henceforth, the award will beknown as the BJI Glenn AllisonAward. It will not be presentedannually, only when a bowleraccomplishes something extraor-dinary on the lanes. (The SoCalBowling Writers Assn. had asimilar award—the MerleMatthews Award.)

After the Columbia Dinner,I had a chance to talk with thelikable Allison. The first thing Iasked him was, “How do youfeel about the two 900 series thatwere prebowled by teenagerRobert Mushtare of Carthage,N.Y. and approved by theUSBC?”

“It doesn’t bother me as longas I have this,” Allison said, ashe pointed to the USBC Hall ofFame patch on his Navy bluesports coat.

Allison, one of the mostpopular bowlers to come out ofSouthern California, holds nogrudges against the ABC orUSBC. As a matter of fact, hehas been—and still is—a Bowl-ing Ambassador for the USBC.

He says, “I’ve gotten a lotmore publicity because the ABCturned down my 900 than if theyhad approved it.”

Here’s an interesting statis-tic: In the past nine years, theABC/USBC has approved 11900 series. Yet, in the previous111 years of organized bowling, there were none… zero…

Glenn “Mr. 900” Allison

zilch… nada. You’d think theUSBC would give Allison creditfor his 900 and put an asterisknext to it, at least.

You know what I’d pay tosee? An old-fashioned home-and-home match between the 73-year-old Glenn Allison and 17-year-old Robert Mushtare.

My money would be on “Mr.900.” The original one, that is.

By the way, did you knowthat when Allison rolled his 900,the league (“Anchor Girl Trios”)didn’t even shoot its average thatnight? Allison also competed inan earlier league that sameevening—and failed to shoot600. So he went out to his carand got out his Columbia ball. And, as they say, the rest is his-tory.

FINAL ITEM: GlennAllison’s skill with a bowling ballmay have diminished some overthe years, but you couldn’tprove it by the way the talentedseptuagenarian performed inCorpus Christi last March. Allhe did was roll a splendid 1882all-events score.

Allison rolled 569 in the teamevent, 673 in singles and 640 indoubles. It was his 55th ABC/USBC tournament appearance.Absolutely amazing!

“I’ve joined many of myfriends on the (100,000) pinfalllist, and it’s nice to be in suchgood company,” Allison said.

They’d say the same thingabout him.

The firstthree weeks will be scheduled atCal Bowl with out of area trav-eling slated to begin on Septem-ber 11, following September 4Labor Day Monday.

After 48 years as President, this writer left office to become“League Manager” and VicePresident Bernice Williams waselected to assume the office. ViWilson was elected Vice Presi-dent. No other officer electionwas required, and the league wasreassured there will be nonoticable changes in the weeklyleague operation. Merlene Eashretired as secretay/treasurer andwas given a standing ovation forher many years of service to theleague.

The only new sponsor willbe The Bowling News, autho-rized by Carol “Mama”Mancini, along with Del Rio, fortwo sponsorships. WestminsterLanes added a third sponsorship;Cerritos added one and Key-stone Lanes added a third spon-sorship. Cal Bowl’s five spon-sorships completes the 16-teamroster.

Prior to the roll call for teamfranchise captains, DarleneWaken was approved to receiveMerlene Eash’s franchise andMargo McClain, who had beenapproved last season to assumePenny Hirsch’s franchise, re-ported. all teams were filled.Hopefully, those on the waitinglist to join the league will beavailable for subbing and we al-ready have verified most “oldsubs” will return.

The league members extenddeepest sympathy to PatWillmore in the loss of her son,age 56, following a heart attack. Also to his wife, Kitty, who hasbeen a regular on the Vegas char-ter bus for years as Pat’sroomate.

Better Bowlers TournamentNo. 1 Analysis

by Jim Koenings/Norris Turner - DirectorsIn our first tournament, we had 8 left-handers and 20 right-

handers. Two out of the 8 left-handers cashed and 5 out of the 20right-handers cashed. That is a 1 out 4 ratio for both. The averageentering average for left-handers was 208.375, while the averageentering average for righters was 206.05. The left-handers did alittle better in the tournament, average wise, as they averaged 218.55,while the right-handers averaged 213.79. So the left-handers im-proved about 10 pins over their entering average, while the right-handers improved about 8 pins over their entering average.

Overall, we think this was a very fair tournament. A right-hander, George Lewis led the handicap qualifying , while a left-hander, Chris Sargent won the tournament. We think the bowlerswould be happy to return to Brunswick Moreno Valley Bowl atsome date in the future.

The next Better Bowlers Tournament is scheduled for July 23,2006 at Classic Lanes in Norco. We believe, Jon Diso, the GeneralManager, will give both sides an equal shot. Jan Niblett of Luster-Cote, Inc. is adding $200 to the prize money. We think there is avery good chance that 8 bowlers will make it to the finals in BetterBowlers Tournament No. 2.

For those bowlers that are unfamiliar with Better Bowlers Tour-naments, we have designed our tournament for all bowlers withaverages from 190 to 230 plus, including seniors. This is a handicapevent with the handicap being 50% of the difference between yourentering average and 230, with the maximum handicap being 20 pinsper game. We have a 5 game qualifying across 10 lanes with a singleelimination finals. Any PBA National Champion, will not be al-lowed to bowl in our tournaments. Any PBA Regional Championmust enter our tournaments at 230. Any non-champion PBA mem-ber must enter at a minimum of 225.

Gosnell & Roberge StarIn Rocky Marsh Doubles

by Joy McGregorANAHEIM—It’s still HOT inside Linbrook Bowl as the AC is

not working up to par but the scores sure are. Bob Gosnell laid thegroundwork and generated some steam en route to his league-lead-ing 916 series in the Rocky Marsh Doubles. Bob turned the heat onto better each game: 212-216-234 and 254. Nice bowling, Bob andRoberta says, “Keep it up, partner!”

Brian Roberge was rock’n rollin’ along to the tune of 231-193-239 and 239, recording a fine 902 set. He really enjoys his member-ship in the exclusive 900 Club and plans to keep current. Doescleaning your bowling ball before each session really work, Brian?
