Tet Festival 201430 January to 6 February

Tet Nguyen Dan Tet Nguyen Dan is an important Vietnamese festival beginning on the first day of the first lunar month. It marks the beginning of the lunar New Year and the arrival of spring. Tet is the most popular festival in Vietnam and artefacts suggest that it has been celebrated since at least 500 B.C. The exact origin is unknown.

The goal of the Tet celebration is to begin the year right. On the eve of the three-day festival, houses and ancestral graves are thoroughly cleaned and a ceremonial meal is prepared. Customs associated with other new year celebrations including paying off debts, giving gifts, resolving conflicts in relationships and wearing new clothes are performed during Tet. Other more unique activities include firecrackers – in the belief that loud sounds will drive away evil, boat races, swinging contests and dragon dancing. The traditional dragon dance is supposed to spread good health and promote prosperity.

The dragon dance, a vital part of Vietnamese culture, is performed in several festivals, particularly the Tet celebration. The dragon symbolises blessing and prosperity and the dance is performed to expel evil spirits and to bring good luck.

Cay Neu Literally means erecting the bamboo pole ceremony

Cay Neu represents the New Year’s tree. It consists of a bamboo stem that is stripped of its leaves except for those on the crown and is decorated with red paper or talismanic objects. The crown apex is sometimes adorned with the Yin and Yang -- symbols of the two principal forces of the universe. sometimes a paper carp flag may be placed instead. In Vietnamese legend, the carp was believed to be the Kitchen God’s vehicle that took him to Heaven. Cay Neu is taken down ceremonially on the seventh day of Tet.
