Texas Succeeding Facts

Through fiscal conservatism and a focus on economic development initiatives, Gov. Perry has brought 

our state unparalleled economic strength that has made it the envy of the country. Gov. Perry’s

commitment to principles of limited government, low taxes and fiscal restraint has fostered a business

climate that has created more jobs than any other state over the last decade, and established a

 successful model of good governance for the rest of the nation to follow.

The accolades and rankings Texas has earned for its strong economic position speak for themselves:

•  CNBC has ranked Texas America’s Top State for Business, based on their study that scored each statebased on 40 different measures of competitiveness. Texas received more points than any other state basedon categories including: cost of doing business, workforce, economy, education, quality of life, technologyand innovation, transportation, cost of living, business friendliness, and access to capital. (CNBC, July 2010)

•  Texas’ major metro areas – Austin, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston and San Antonio – were named as

 America’s Recovery Capitals on a list compiled by Forbes. “Looking for a place to take advantage of therecovery?” Forbes asks. “Try Texas.” (Forbes, June 2010) 

•  Texas created more private sector jobs than any other state in the nation over the last 10 years.

Texas also has the lowest unemployment rate among the 10 largest states in the nation. Additionally,

since the beginning of 2010 Texas has created more total new jobs (and more private sector jobs)than any other state in the nation. (U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, May 2010)

•  Texas has four of top 10 cities for new graduates looking for jobs . (Businessweek, July 2010) 

•  Texas has five of the top counties for job growth over the last nine years: #2 (Williamson), #3 (Hays),#5 (Fort Bend), #6 (Webb), #7 (Collin). (CNNMoney, 2010) 

•  Texas has the 2nd lowest tax burden in the nation. (The Economist, June 2009) 

•  Texas has one of the lowest debt burdens in the country: Texas (pop. 24 million) ranked fourth overallbehind Utah, New Hampshire and Nebraska (which have a combined pop. of 5.9 million), and was the best among the large states. (Forbes, Feb. 2010) 

•  The foreclosure rate in Texas is one of the lowest of the 10 largest states . The rates in California andFlorida are approximately four times higher than in Texas (RealtyTrac, April 2010)

•  Texas was ranked as the 2009 Best Business Climate by Business Facilities magazine. (Business Facilities,

•  Texas is one of the friendliest states for small business and entrepreneurship . Texas (pop. 24million) ranked 3rd behind South Dakota (pop. 812,000) and Nevada (pop. 2.6 million). ( Small Businesses

•  Texas is the top exporting state in the nation for the eighth year in a row based on 2009 export data.Texas’ exports totaled $163 billion for 2009. (U.S. Department of Commerce)

•  Texas is tied with California as home to the most Fortune 500 corporate headquarters, and has the

most Fortune 1000 headquarters in the nation. (Fortune 2010).
