Welcome back. Happy New Year! It was great to see everyone return

safely from the holidays. It was certainly an eventful one. I hope that it

was an enjoyable one for you and your family.

We have a few new students that have joined us at Carruthers, so I would

like to extend a warm welcome to those students and their families.

As is usually the case, our Christmas/Winter concert was well attended.

Our students/children were outstanding and showed themselves to be

wonderful performers.

Once again we thank you for your generous support for the hat and

mitten tree, the food drive and the kindergarten fundraising initiative to

support a community. The kindergarteners raised $320 for a toy drive. As

always you reflected the true meaning of the season of giving.

Staff Changes

Ms. Ptaszynk will be taking over Mrs. Denike’s grade 7. She has been

teaching the class on a half time basis since the beginning of October.

Please join me in in welcoming Mrs. Trumbley-Novak our new vice

principal. Mrs. Trumbley-Novak visited the school in December as was

introduced to staff and students at that time. If you are visiting the school

in the coming weeks, please introduce yourself. She is looking forward to

meeting and getting to know you.

Inclement weather

It looks like this winter might be shaping up to be like last winter.

In recent days we’ve seen the grip of a deep freeze or polar vortex.

Students need to be dressed appropriately for the weather conditions

with layered warm clothing, hat, gloves, scarves and boots. We do keep

students inside at recess time on extremely cold days.

1. Skin begins to freeze at - 25 degrees wind chill. It will freeze in minutes at -35 degrees wind chill.

2. Frostbite becomes a risk at -25 degrees wind chill.

School Bus Transportation News Important Update

Durham Student Transportation Services is introducing weather zones for inclement weather cancellations.

Please be sure to visit their website, www.dsts.on.ca for additional information. The new inclement weather

zones will begin Fall 2014. We are in Zone 4.

For the past four weeks I have been serving as an Ontario Legislative Page

at Queen’s Park. It was an honour to be chosen amongst the many

applicants, to experience this once in a lifetime opportunity. Being a

Provincial Page in the Queen’s Park legislature meant that I spent Monday

to Friday in the Chamber collecting official documents and assisting the

MPPs, the Clerks, the Speaker and Hansard. Before I actually started my

term of duty, I had to make sure that I memorized all 107 MPP names and

faces as well as the chamber seating plan, in order to fulfill my job as a

Page. The highlight of my experience was helping out during Question

Period. At this this time, Pages have a lot of things to do and it was

interesting to see how the MPPs acted and how passionate they are about

their topics of concerns and their ridings. I met a lot of amazing people and

it was an incredible experience.
