• One year after having the toughest strength-of-schedule in the Atlantic Coast Conference two years in a row, Tech once again will play many of the top teams in the country.

• In the preseason polls, 10 opponents were ranked in the top 25, including No. 2 Louisville and No. 5 Virginia, who are two of the first three home ACC weekends to the season.

CARDIAC JACKETS• Georgia Tech baseball has been in for exciting baseball the last two seasons, posting a 12-7 record in one-run games.

• Last season, Tech posted a dramatic 4-3 win on Feb. 18 at Georgia Southern and walked off Virginia Tech on Friday night in its lone ACC weekend to finish 2-2.

• Since 2002, Tech has posted a nearly 60-percent win percentage in one-run games (.583).

OFFENSE• Georgia Tech baseball looks to continue its annual tradition of being one of the top offensive ACC teams in the country.

• Before the season was cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic, Tech was just hitting its stride, hitting .277 for the season just a year after leading the ACC at .297.

• Georgia Tech picked up where it left off and is second in the ACC through four games, hitting .306 and co-leading the ACC with seven home runs.

• Five Jackets are hitting north of .300 (Drew Compton, Kevin Parada, Luke Waddell, Stephen Reid, and Jake DeLeo).

• Tech was also a perfect 5-for-5 on stolen bases last weekend. Last season, Tech hadn't stolen its fifth base until Feb. 29 during the third week of the season.

• As a team, the Jackets return most of its production, but do lose "The Machine" Michael Guldberg and the big bat of Baron Radcliff, who were both drafted in the five-round 2020 MLB Draft.

• Looking to replace that offensive power will be the likes of Waddell, Reid, Compton, Hall and Parada.

• Proven hitters, Waddell hit .300 last season, while Compton hit .321 and Hall hit .228.

• Preseason second-team all-American Waddell remains one of the top shortstops and table setters in America, earning shortstop of the year semifinalist status in 2019 and leading off Team USA against Japan in the summer of 2019.

• Compton remains one of the top underclassmen in the country. He finished second on the team with three home runs and 12 RBI, as well as four doubles and triples.

• Compton started his collegiate career by becoming third Yellow Jacket since 2015 to hit a home run in their first career at-bat.

• Hall is a career .300 hitter who started off 2020 slow. With the season shortened, Hall got back to work and his slump ended when he hit .500 for the fall offseason.

• One of the deepest rosters in the country, also looking to make a dent at the plate will be Austin Wilhite, Stephen Reid, Jake Holland, Tres Gonzalez and Andrew Jenkins.

• Reid led the team with five home runs in just 16 games last season.

• Jenkins was hitting .364 to start his freshman campaign before suffering an injury at Georgia Southern that sidelined him the rest of the season.

• In addition to the elder statesmen, an infusion of youth like Kevin Parada and Jake DeLeo from Georgia Tech's second-straight top-8 recruiting class proves to provide the Jackets plenty of options.

INFIELDERS• Georgia Tech baseball returns perhaps one of the country's elite middle infield combo in shortstop Luke Waddell and second baseman Austin Wilhite.

• Waddell moved to shortstop full-time during the 2019 season but instantly made his way toward becoming a nationally lauded defender, getting named a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year award.

• Waddell was named a second-team all-American by D1Baseball and named to the preseason Golden Spikes Award watch list during the 2021 preseason.

• Waddell has continued to play the part of table setter, hitting .412 early with seven hits and a double, reaching base at a .500 clip.

• In his opening at-bat on Sunday against Eastern Kentucky, Waddell launched his first home run of the season and fourth of his career.

• Waddell was the third-toughest to strikeout in the ACC in 2019 and sports a 10.1:1 at-bat-to-strikeout ratio over the last two seasons.

• Also potentially seeing time at second base is Jadyn Jackson.

• Jackson hit .238 on the year in 11 games, four starts, becoming the hero when he walked off Georgia Tech on a pinch-hit single to right field in the ninth.

• Jenkins was once again sensational at the plate, hitting .364 over Opening Weekend against EKU, finishing with four hits, three doubles for three RBI.

• His three doubles ranks 10th in the country.

• Jenkins played both first base and designated hitter in Opening Weekend.

• Jenkins hit .364 through the first four games of the 2020 season before suffering an injury that wound up taking him out of the remainder of the year.

• He finished with four hits, one double and a home run for five RBI, reaching base .385.

• Malloy was ultra-impressive defensively at third base, while also hitting .222 for the weekend. He finished with two hits, one double, two RBI and two runs overall.

• Continuing its tradition of being #CatcherU, Georgia Tech will feature one of the hottest competitions behind the dish between the talents of second-year freshman Jake Holland and highly rated recruit Kevin Parada.

• Holland struggled offensively during Opening Weekend against EKU, but was able to launch a two-run bomb on Opening Day.

• Holland took part last season in the first all-freshman battery on Opening Day in program history when he caught for frosh RHP Zach Maxwell on Feb. 14, 2020 vs. St. Peter’s.

• Holland joined the Jackets as the No. 2-ranked catcher in the state of Florida and the 10th-best catcher in the country, according to Perfect Game. He was ranked as the 112th best player overall by PG with “big potential power” at the plate.

• Holland was fantastic defensively behind the plate during Opening Weekend, catching three of the four stolen-base attempts and making a #SCTop10 play at home in a 8-6-2 relay to keep Cincinnati from adding a run.

• Holland finished the year on a cold slump, hitting .158 for six hits, three doubles and three RBI on the season.

• Parada has looked ultra impressive in his debut. After hitting .200 for the weekend, he was a perfect 4-for-4 on Wednesday against Mercer, finishing with four RBI off a double and a home run.

• His first first at-bat during Feb. 20's game was a walk.

• Also ultra-reliable behind the dish last season was junior Cameron Turley.

• Turley had a terrific game in his start against Tennessee Tech (March 3, 2020), catching a variety of arms before also going 2-for-3 at the plate for two RBI as well.

OUTFIELDERS• "There might not be a better defensive [outfield] trio in the country" says D1Baseball about Georgia Tech's outfield of Tres Gonzalez, Colin Hall and Jake DeLeo.

2021 GEORGIA TECH BASEBALL GAME NOTESGAME 5-7- AT NC STATE • FEB. 26-28 • RALEIGH, N.C.

PITCHING• One of the main reason for their recent success has been the Yellow Jacket’s pitching staff stockpiling talented arms and highly regarded prospects and getting the most out of them.

• That compounds with Tech losing only one pitcher to the 2020 MLB Draft (RHP Jonathan Hughes).

• Losing the services of Hughes, Georgia Tech also regains the services of captain LHP Brant Hurter, who led the team with a 2.42 ERA after he rehabbed from Tommy John Surgery prior to the 2020 season.

• In Hurter's first time out since April 2019, he allowed just one run in 4.2 innings, striking out three and holding opponents to a .222 batting average.

• Hurter's boasts the best conference ERA in the ACC from 2019.

• Despite not playing the whole season, Hurter still fanned 58 batters and held opponents to a .199 batting average, allowing just 13 runs overall.

• His career opponent batting average ranks eighth since 2002 at Georgia Tech (.246).

• Hurter's last appearance for Georgia Tech was April 28, 2019.

• Also figuring to be a big piece of the Georgia Tech rotation is second-year sophomore RHP Cort Roedig.

• Roedig carried his freshman postseason success, allowing just three hits with a 1.08 ERA and .115 OBA in his two tournament starts -- ACC Championship Game and NCAA Regional elimination game -- enter his sophomore cam-paign, holding a 4.34 ERA.

• His best game of the season came on Feb. 22, 2020 against Ohio State, surrendering just one hit and one run while striking out six in six innings for the win.

• Roedig underwent offseason surgery prior to the 2021 season and while available out of the bullpen, he is currently limited from starting.

• Another big get for the experience of the pitching staff is the return continued work RHP Andy Archer, who missed 2019 season with a non-Tommy John elbow injury.

• In his first collegiate start, Archer finished with one earned run in 3.0 innings, striking out four and holding opponents to a .167 average.

• Archer didn’t disappoint in his first appearance back in 2020, pitching career-bests in 4.0 innings and seven strikeouts for the save against Cincinnati, holding hitters to just a .154 average.

• On the year, Archer posted a 4.22 ERA in four appearances, earning two saves and striking out 16.

• Archer was named to the Stopper of the Year preseason watch list.

• Archer will get his first collegiate start this Saturday against Eastern Kentucky.

• LHP Sam Crawford put folks on notice when he went 6.0 innings for the win in just 68 pitches, surrendering no runs and just two hits, holding batters to a .100 average.

• Crawford's story remains a good one as he fought to make the 35-man Georgia Tech roster for two years before finally making it in 2020.

• Crawford then entered the bottom of the eighth on the road at Georgia Southern (Feb. 18, 2020) with runners at the corners and two outs. He proceeded to slam the door shut with 1.1 innings of no-hit ball to close, striking out three overall for the win and cementing himself on the team.

• Crawford finished the shortened 2020 season with a 2-0 record in eight appearances. He worked to a 1.86 ERA, surrendering just six hits and two runs while striking out 14.

• He held opponents to a .167 batting average.

• Crawford's journey continues when he gets the nod to make his first career collegiate start on Sunday vs. Eastern Kentucky.

• Hard-throwing RHP Zach Maxwell showed his abillity to work out of the bullpen Sunday when he struck out two in 1.0 innings, hitting 97 mph on his fastball.

• Last season, frosh righty Maxwell got the nod on Feb. 14, 2020, making him the second true freshman to start Opening Day for the Yellow Jackets on the mound since Kris Wilson in 1995 (Xzavion Curry - 2017)

• Veteran and team captain Hall will anchor the outfield in center field, having now played all outfield positions for Georgia Tech.

• After missing five starts as a freshman, Hall has started every game of his career since, totally 134 entering the 2021 season.

• Should Hall start Friday and Saturday, Game 2 will mark Hall's 100th-consecutive start.

• Hall has had a hit in each of the last three games, including his lone RBI against EKU (Feb. 21).

• Hall's bat was beginning to warm up when the 2020 season was cut short. He finished hitting .228 in the 16 games for 13 hits, five doubles, one triple and a homer for 10 RBI - one of four double-figure RBI players.

• The last two years, Hall has 25 multi-hit games and 13 multi-RBI games.

• Gonzalez has played tremendously defensively but has been cold at the plate, getting just one hit, but has drawn a team-best five walks thus far.

• Gonzalez came on the scene in a big was when the true freshman pinch-hit against Georgia Southern (Feb. 18, 2020), hitting a double and legging out an infield single to score the tying run.

• It was the first RBI of his college career.

• Gonzalez finished the season hitting .368 over 19 at-bats, playing in 13 games and making one start.

• Gonzalez recorded seven hits, two doubles and three RBI in 2020.

• DeLeo got his first collegiate start on Sunday in right field and went 2-for-4 with a double, scoring three times too.

• DeLeo enters the 2021 as a member of Tech's second-straight top-8 recruiting class and No. 8 outfielder in the country, according to Perfect Game.

• He was named the 33rd top first-year prospect nationally.

• In 71 showcase games, DeLeo hit .300 with 63 hits, 16 doubles, three triples and four homers for 42 RBI.

• He also drew 27 walks and stole a whopping 46 bases.

• Also an option in the outfield or as the designated hitter is Stephen Reid.

• Reid continued to show his ability to do damage with power during Opening Weekend against EKU, crushing four hits and one home run for four RBI overall.

• He then added another home run as the DH against Mercer.

• Reid led the team with five home runs last season for 10 RBI as the team's DH. He hit .273 for 12 hits overall.

TRUE FRESHMAN PITCHERS STARTING OPENING DAY -- GT HISTORY Player Opponent Year Zach Maxwell St. Peter’s 2020 Xzavion Curry BYU 2017 Kris Wilson Charleston Southern 1995

• Maxwell was a presence in his 4.0 innings to start, allowing just one hit and punching out five hitters, holding St. Peter’s to a .077 batting average.

• Maxwell was electric in his second start against Ohio State, moving to the Sunday spot. In 5.0 innings, he punched out eight - including six swinging - allowing just a hit and run for his first career decision win.

• On the year, Maxwell finished with a 3.14 ERA and 1-1 record, striking out 20 overall, but issuing 16 walks.

• Maxwell's control is the only thing holding him back from being an electric pitcher for Georgia Tech, being able to both throw an upper-90's fastball and a hammer breaking ball for strikeouts.

• Two seasons after Tech started a freshmen or sophomore in 45 of its 58 games, the Jackets may once again be led by youth.

• Potentially playing more of a closing role for Georgia Tech this season is bullpen anchor LHP Luke Bartnicki.

• In his first two appearances closing, Bartnicki has worked 2.0 innings of no-hit baseball with a tied for team-best four strikeouts.

• He then put out a late fire on Wednesday against Mercer, entering with bases loaded in the ninth inning for a one-pitch save.

• Bartnicki started off 2020 with his best performances of his young college career.

• He finished the year with a 1.76 ERA in four appearances and three starts. In 15.1 innings, he allowed just seven hits and three earned runs, punching out 17 and holding opponents to a .137 average.

• Making his first three starts last season to tremendous success, Bartnicki plays a valuable, versatile role for Georgia Tech.

• Also back is team ERA leader and 2020 freshman all-American LHP Dalton Smith.

• Smith posted an impressive 1.46 ERA last season, earning a 3-0 record in six relief appearances. He allowed just two earned runs and punched out 14 as a tremendous stopper for the Jackets.

• Smith will likely continue to work as a major arm out of the bullpen and a major asset to the middle-to-late innings.

• Georgia Tech is also hoping to utilize the healthy captain RHP Hugh Chapman.

• Chapman was one of two Jackets to appear twice on Opening Weekend (joining Bartnicki) and continued his fine work from a season ago, working 2.0 innings of no-hit baseball, striking out two.

PITCHING

• Chapman got off to his best start in 2020 before the season was cut short. In eight relief appearances, he worked to a 2.25 ERA, allowing just two runs and five hits.

• Chapman struck out 12 and walked just three, holding opponents to a .172 batting average.

• Chapman has appeared in 32 games in his career with a 2-1 record, but has been bitten by the injury bug throughout his career.

• Georgia Tech will also regain the services of LHP Joseph Mannelly who is successfully rehabbed from Tommy John surgery.

• Mannelly has looked sharp in his first 5.0 innings over two appearances. He's allowed just one run and struck out seven total.

• Mannelly got his first decision, getting the win against Mercer (Feb. 24)

• Prior to his injury, Mannelly sported a 0.00 ERA in 2019.

• For the first time in his collegiate career, usual second baseman senior Austin Wilhite worked in relief/closing situations on the mound for Georgia Tech.

• He made his debut on March 3, 2020 against Tennessee Tech, working just one inning and touching 91 mph with his fastball.

• Due to the shortened season, Wilhite was limited to just three appearances and 4.0 innings, but dealt a 0.00 ERA and three strikeouts, surrendering only two hits.

• Part of Georgia Tech's second-straight top-8 recruiting class, Marquis Grissom, Jr. will also look to establish himself as the highly rated blue chip recruit he was out of high school.

• Grissom, Jr. was rated the 11th overall pitcher in the country by Perfect Game.

• In three years of showcase ball, Grissom, Jr. recorded a 6-2 record and a 2.30 ERA over 107.0 innings of work. He allowed just 35 earned runs and 82 hits for a 1.24 WHIP, while striking out 107 hitters for a 2.1:1 strikeout to walk ratio.• Grissom hails from tremendous Atlanta stock in being the son of Big Leaguer Marquis Grissom.

• Grissom is a former Atlanta Braves outfielder who played 17 seasons in the Big Leagues, helping take the Braves to the 1995 World Series.

• A Georgia Tech Hall of Famer, Brown was a six-time all-star and two-time ERA title winner. He helped the Marlins to the 1995 World Series before signing the first $100 million contact with the LA Dodgers in 1998.

• Georgia Tech will also look to utilize the services of Van-derbilt transfer RHP Chance Huff, who can run his fastball up to 97.

• Huff struck out the two batters he saw in relief on Saturday against Eastern Kentucky in his debut for Tech.

• Another transfer to the Georgia Tech bullpen is grad trans-fer RHP John Medich from Division III Rhodes College.

• Medich worked his way back from Tommy John surgery to pitch 10 impressive innings last spring with a fastball up to 95.

DANNY BORRELL• Looking to get a full year under his belt is Georgia Tech pitching coach Danny Borrell, who prior to 2020 arrived on The Flats after 18 years in the New York Yankees organization as both a player and the pitching coordinator for their world-renowned farm system.

• Borrell became the youngest pitching coordinator in the MLB when hired in 2015 by the Yankees, where he led approximately 180 pitchers per year and 11 pitching coaches over nine minor league affiliates.

• Borrell helped lead the Yankees to be the best pitching organization in baseball statistically.

• In total, he developed 34 Big Leaguers during his tenure with New York – including MLB All-Stars Dellin Betances and Luis Severino.

• Borrell was drafted by the Yankees in 2000 after a standout career at Wake Forest.

• A two-way player at Wake, Borrell earned freshman All-America and second-team All-America honors en route to leading the Demon Deacons to two ACC titles (1998, 1999).

• He finished his career 10-8 on the mound in 24 starts with a 6.21 ERA, while batting a career .336 with 37 homers and 174 RBI – both still tied for 10th in Wake Forest history.
