DMC 'The Dunmurry May-Day Conspiracy' Artist : Aoibheann Greenan Curated by Rayne Booth April 17
th - June 20
TH
Temple Bar Gallery + Studios presents DMC: Dunmurry May-Day Conspiracy. A solo exhibition in which artist Aoibheann Greenan presents a full scale inhabitable diorama in the gallery. This pseudo-recreation simulates the ceremonial ground of a fictional secret society called the Draoithe Dún Muirigh (the Druids of Dunmurry) and imagines a new folklore around the Delorean car manufacturing plant in Dunmurray, Co.Antrim. Aoibheann Greenan's work uses imagery that is often influenced by Utopianism, b-movies and counter or sub cultures. Ideas of tourism and the idealisation of other cultures which filter through Greenan's work chime with the location of TBG+S, in Temple Bar, the most popular tourist destination in Ireland. Her diorama mimics Temple Bar's often absurd attempts to perpetuate the myth of national identity by projecting hyperreal and romanticised image of Ireland.
Writing Commission | Sara Baume is commissioned to write five short essays over the course of 2015 in response to TBG+S’ gallery programme to be published and for broadcast on RTE’s Arena. Her most recent piece, DMC (Dunmurry May-Day Conspiracy) can be read by following this link . A recording of Sara reading her essay for RTE Radio 1 can be heard on the TBG+S Soundcloud page.
Sarah Baume’s debut novel, Spill Simmer Falter
Wither, was published by Tramp Press in February 2015. Sara Baume won the Hennessy Award for New Irish Writing in 2015.
'Bealtaine' Thursday 30
th April 9-10pm
Artist's Performance - Aoibheann Greenan DMC The 30th of April marks the pagan festival of Bealtaine, a time of purification and transition in which bonfires are lit and hawthorn trees are decorated. According to folklore it is a time when the veil between the world of the supernatural and our own is said to be at its thinnest. On this date Aoibheann Greenan invites viewers to witness the pseudo- re-enactment of a fictional secret society named Draoithe Dún Muirígh, as part of her exhibition 'Dunmurry May-Day Conspiracy' At Temple Bar Gallery + Studios. Upcoming Exhibition
Display Show
03 July - 29 August 2015
Curator: Gavin Wade
Gavin Wade is an artist-curator and Director of
Eastside Projects, Birmingham. Art is not exhibited, art exhibits. Display Show
initiates a set of artworks embedded with, and
reliant upon, explicit conditions of display. Each
work expresses its context as a combination of
functional attributes that allow the artwork to
always be in the mode of exhibiting – they are
always in the process of display.
Display Show exhibits a number of portable
exhibition systems from reworkings of Frederick
Kiesler’s display units of the 1920s and 40s, by
Celine Condorelli and Gavin Wade, through to
Yelena Popova’s customised flight case containing
paintings with references to constructivism, Nazi
theft and hoarding of artworks. Mobile walls,
plinths and architectural modifications focus on
the gestures and actions of friendship, support and
politics within the processes of producing images,
furniture, architecture and communities.
Through Display Show the artists-designers-
curators will make propositions as to how the
physical space of the gallery and ground floor
space, in its context in the larger building and
within the Temple Bar area, could operate to its
full potential.
