FROM THE EDITOR...Good afternoon and welcome back to Sporting Club Thamesmead as we welcome Kingstonian for today’s Ryman Premier League clash.

Five straight defeats may have put a dampener on the previously fine form heading into the New Year, but with the season starting to run out of games there is no time for us to feel sorry for ourselves.

Having played more games than anyone else, it looks increasingly likely to be a three-way battle between Enfield, East Thurrock and the Mead for the final safety spot - and Enfield visit Sporting Club Thamesmead in ten days’ time in what is set to be a crunch encounter either way - please come along and get behind the boys in that one as they need your support.

Today will be tough again against another promotion hopeful, but with the spirit of the Maidstone performance we know what we can do.

BEST OF THE REST...

Good afternoon and welcome back to Sporting Club Thamesmead for today’s Ryman League Premier Division game against Kingstonian.

Firstly, may I take this opportunity in welcoming Alan Dowson and his Kingstonian team to Bayliss Avenue this afternoon. I hope you enjoy your short stay with us and I hope you have a safe journey home afterwards.

We have had another two tough games this week which has seen us failing to pick up any of the points that we deserved. Some missed chances and poor refereeing decisions have cost us where we deserved more.

Last Saturday saw us play Wealdstone here and, although we lost the game 2-0 and it wasn’t our best performance, our workrate alone meant that we had every chance to take something from it.

The conditions were not the best due to the strong winds, but we went a goal down early on through some lacklustre defending. We managed to compose ourselves and defend a very strong wind and come in at half time only 1-0 down.

We stepped up the tempo in the second half and ought to have

equalised straight away, but we missed a great opportunity when Shamir Mullings was unmarked in the six-yard box but failed to score.

We had Wealdstone on the back foot for the first quarter of an hour after the break and all we needed was a goal, but we were dealt a sucker punch by the ref when he awarded a penalty for a foul by Jack Hopkins.

Although I didn’t think Jack should have committed himself, he clearly won the ball and everyone else could see it apart from the ref. Even Gordon Bartlett, Wealdstone’s manager, said he played the ball.

The ref told me after the game he was 100% certain and that, if I had a video, to send it to him.

Well, I have watched it over and over again in slow-motion, and you can clearly see Jack won the ball.

So, as I’m sure you can guess, I have sent it to him and I await an apology. To rub salt in the wounds, later on we should have had a clear penalty on Lewis Tozer, but at the moment we just don’t seem to be getting any decisions our way.

On Tuesday night we travelled to Margate, and to say that I left the ground fuming was an understatement. I know that it can be only too easy to criticise referees, but the performance of the one on Tuesday was disgraceful for both sides.

How we were not spending the night in A&E with young Josh Hill after a horrendous lunge from five-yards I never know. But what made it worse was that he tried to play on,

and it was only the reaction from all the players that made him stop

the game.

If young Josh hadn’t lifted his leg and left it planted

on the floor the tackle would have snapped

his leg in half. After that, his decision-

making for both teams was

extremely

poor and, although we lost the game 2-1, we deserved something from the game.

We went into it with four players missing from Saturday’s squad - Shamir Mullings and Rashid Kamara were both away, Simon Glover was injured and Lanre Azeez had work commitments, so we were down to the bare bones. I thought we got it right tactically and the workrate of the players was exceptional as it has been for a while.

But, again, it will be the missed chances that cost us. We should have been 2-0 up within the first fifteen minutes but didn’t capitalise on some good chances. We were unsettling Margate with our pressing and I thought they were struggling.

Despite that, Margate took the lead two minutes after the horrendous challenge. It was a good finish but I was disappointed with the defending, and it meant that we again came in 1-0 down.

At half-time, I told the lads to keep plugging away and we would get something - we then scored straight from the kick off when Lewis Tozer

scored an overhead kick from a free kick.

It was the least we deserved as the game became very open and a real end-to-end battle. Margate nicked a winner late on from a free kick that should never have been, but it was a poor defensive header that allowed them a shot. If we’re being honest, Sam Mott should probably have saved it.

We went looking for the equaliser but couldn’t find the breakthrough.

Although we lost the game, I couldn’t fault the lads’ effort. I thought we put in a real performance and deserved better and I remain adamant that if we keep playing like we have done over the last three months then results will come.

I knew we had a tough five games coming up and today is the last of them. Kingstonian are a top side and we need to put in a great performance to get anything from the game, but if we do then we are capable of getting a result.

JOY’S JOTTINGS

The ramblings of a club secretary, Dave Joy

As the Ryman League turns into the final straight of the season, ten playing Saturdays remain of the campaign.

Many of my fellow secretaries are having to squeeze many rearranged games into a short time thanks to not only this dreaded weather that has ripped into the fixture list, but also success in the cup competitions which carries the burden of more games to squeeze in.

I understand that some clubs are requesting the consideration of extending the season but, at the moment, I don’t believe it will happen.

The biggest problem that we have is the 42-day rule for postponed matches: all postponed games must be rearranged within seven days, with the match played within 42 days. It may sound a long time, but with the backlog of matches some clubs may have to play Tuesdays and Thursdays as a result - you don’t want that and it may affect how the division ends up!

Pitches are mending, but it may be a while before even the briefest of showers stops putting games in jeopardy. We’re fortunate that our superb draingage and excellent groundstaff means we’ve only lost one home game against Enfield.

Enjoy the game today, and let’s hope for a Thamesmead victory.

THE BOARDROOM

May I welcome the directors, officials, players and supporters of Kingstonian to the SCT and a safe journey home after an enjoyable game and refreshments.

After our match with Wealdstone last Saturday, we made the trip down to the coast to play my old friends Margate. Margate have just been taken over by a new owner who says he plans to have Margate back playing in the league within five years - a statement that is being supported by the appointment of an experienced new manager and, secondly, with the funds being given to said manager for players.

We arrived after driving through the rain to find the roads in Margate dry, but when we went out to look at the pitch we found it very wet and realised the playing service could become very heavy during the match.

Keith was short of a few players, so we started with a different line up. I am sure the Gate supporters were expecting an easy match due to our league position and the squad we had taken, but someone never informed our boys of this and, as usual, they played to their strengths.

Unfortunately, we failed to have the rub of the green in front of goal and were officiated by a referee that seemed to allow hard challenges to go unchecked. For me it was a very unsatisfactory state of affairs and, in the end, we came out with a 2-1 defeat. It could easily have been a draw, or even more, but the boys never gave up and were a credit.

This week both Keith and I were involved in a very important meeting with the Trust

management, in order to agree and finalise a formal way forward within a partnership agreement.

I had previously prepared a lot of work on this subject so it was really a time to finetune the original agreed document and discuss any small changes. In my opinion, we as a club must ensure we have a long tenancy if we are to support the great work being achieved on the pitch.

We also need an ability to raise funds from matchdays and other marketing initiatives, but it has all been made a little bit more difficult due to the current amalgamation of the Thamesmead Trust business within the Peabody Group, which has resulted in a little bit more paperwork being raised before formal agreement can be reached.

I am glad to report that all matters discussed progressed well, though, and a final meeting due for the first week in March has

been agreed where all formalities can be concluded by the signing of this document. The overall agreement will allow the club to be playing football at the SCT for a number of years, whilst we also want to make the Mead Bar a more sociable hub for the club on matchdays.

At this time we are all involved in ensuring that the outstanding work that is required to bring the ground up to grade C is to be completed by the latest date of the 31st March. We have to install a third turnstile and convert a Gents WC into a four-urinal system, so if there are any parties reading this programme that have a little bit of free time I am sure the committee members who have taken on this task would appreciate your input and assistance.

Now let’s enjoy the game today.

Paul Bowden-BrownDirector

I am sure the Margate supporters were expecting an easy game due to our league

position but the players were a credit

KINGSTONIAN

We welcome Alan Dowson and his Kingstonian side to Sporting Club Thamesmead this afternoon as, once again, both sides battle it out for different reasons.

Like last time out here against Wealdstone, the Ks have promotion firmly in their sights and, although Wealdstone have the chance to pull clear, the rest remain very tight together.

It has been a season of consistency for Dowson’s men who only dropped out of the top five for the first time this season last weekend as they lost 4-1 at Hendon for a third successive defeat.

They will be hoping, however, that the poor run of form has come to an end following the midweek win at home to

Wingate & Finchley, which also secured a thirteenth clean sheet of the season for the league’s third best defence.

Indeed, the K’s astonishingly started the season without conceding a solitary goal in their opening six matches before defeat away to title rivals Maidstone.

With just three draws all season, only Dulwich have won more games than the K’s and the Mead will have to be on form in front of goal if they are to take anything from today’s game.

Dowson has recently been boosted by the return of winger, Charlie Knight, following time out suffering from a back injury - the K’s boss told the local press that Knight is the first name on the teamsheet when fully fit.

The modern day Kingstonian Football Club can trace its roots back to 1885 and the formation of the Kingston & Surbiton YMCA Association Football Club in the autumn of that year.

The club had a lot of success in the 1930s winning the FA Amateur Cup in 1933 along with numerous other competitions in that decade. The Isthmian League title was won in both 1934 and 1937, with Scottish International Douglas Whitehead taking over the mantle of leading player from Macey who retired in 1936 after 13 years magnificent service. And the Surrey Senior Cup was won in 1935 and 1939, the latter being the second occasion that a Kingston club had won the County Cup immediately before the outbreak of war.

They also enjoyed a period of great success more recently, winning the Isthmian League in 1998 and the FA Trophy in 1999 and 2000 at Wembley Stadium under renowned manager Geoff Chapple, and then nearly managed to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup in 2001.

Entering the competition at the Fourth Qualifying Round, they beat Devizes Town before beating two Football League clubs – Brentford 3–1 away in the first round and Southend United 1–0 away in the third round, either side of a win over fellow Conference team Southport – on their way to the FA Cup fourth round proper, where they were seconds away from beating Bristol City before succumbing to a late winner in the replay.

Relegation and financial problems saw a sharp downturn in the club’s fortunes between 2001 and 2005.

Excessive spending, both on the team & on ground re-development designed to bring Kingsmeadow up to Football League status, had left the club unable to pay its bills.

And when, in October 2001, the Inland Revenue threatened to wind-up the club within seven days if it couldn’t pay its tax bill of £179,000, Ks went into administration.

However, in February 2005 Khosla stepped down as Chairman, selling the club to Jimmy Cochrane. While this did not save Kingstonian from relegation that year, the 2005–06 season saw Kingstonian Football Club revitalised.

They only narrowly missed out on the promotion playoffs and

finished their season by beating AFC Wimbledon in the final of the Surrey Senior Cup at Woking’s ground by one goal to nil.

Changes continued during mid-2006 with Mark Anderson

and Malcolm Winwright taking

charge of the club, installing Stuart McIntyre as successor to Ian McDonald in the role of

head coach.

However McIntyre’s stay in the role was

brief and unsuccessful, with he himself being replaced by Alan Dowson at the start of 2007 after a run of extremely poor results.

Under Dowson the club has stabilised and has seen an improvement in its fortunes including promotion back to the Isthmian Premier in 2009.

Rob is a talented goalkeeper who started out at Crawley Town before catching the attention of the Kingstonian management whilst at Whyteleafe. Joined the Ks following a spell at Horsham and quickly settled in to the side, playing an important part in the club’s run to the play-off final that season.

ROB TOLFREY

Aaron is a strong athletic defender who came to prominence as a youngster under the guidance of Alan Dowson at Walton & Hersham, earning a move to QPR. Spent three months on loan with the Ks in 2007, and eventually returned to the non-league game with Tooting & Mitcham United.

AARON GOODE

Josh is a midfielder who signed from Bashley in October. The midfielder made a name for himself with the Hampshire-based outfit as a tireless, box-to-box runner

JOSH CASEY

Matt signed for the K’s from Staines Town, with the young central defender having been snapped up by Marcus Gayle. Matt has a mature head at the back despite being young for a central defender, is composed with the ball at his feet and possesses strong organisational skills.

MATT DRAGE

Defender Sam joined the K’s in the summer as another arrival from Staines Town. Having began his career at MK Dons, the defender has previously captained Havant & Waterlooville, Horsham and also Sutton United where he was instrumental in winning the Ryman Premier League.

Charles is a midfielder who emerged as a promising youngster with Redhill four years ago, before moving to Waltham Forest during the 2010/11 campaign. Still young, Charles has also appeared for Harrow Borough before joining the K’s.

CHARLES OFOSU-HENE

Youngster Daniel joined the K’s from AFC Wimbledon towards the end of last season during a poor run of form, playing a role amongst other youngsters to inject energy into the side. Having established himself as a key player in the side, Daniel went on trial with Ipswich Town before Christmas.

DANIEL SWEENEY

Prolific front-man Ryan notched his eighteenth goal of a successful campaign on Tuesday night to bag three more points in the title chase. The 27-year-old has formed a strong partnership with Andre McCollin since joining from Hampton & Richmond in the close season.

RYAN MOSS

Charlie joined the K’s in October from Bashley, following in the footsteps of former team mate, Josh Casey. The 25-year-old winger has recently recovered from a back problem and his fitness will prove crucial in the side’s bid for promotion.

CHARLIE KNIGHT

Left-winger Jack joined the K’s last month from Cray Wanderers, having scored against Alan Dowson’s men for the Wands this season. Jack picked up his footballing education with Charlton Athletic before a spell with Braintree Town and Carshalton Athletic.

JACK CLARK

IN CHARGE

Alan started as a youngster at Millwall before playing for Fulham, Bradford City and Darlington, making a total of 55 appearances in the Football League.

He later played in the Conference for Slough Town and his hometown club Gateshead. Joined Walton & Hersham in 1996 and following 334 appearances and 10 years service was granted a testimonial.

Alan was manager for his final two years at the Swans, appointed in October 2004 and immediately taking the club to promotion to the Ryman Premier Division.

Appointed Kingstonian manager in January 2007, he won the Ryman Division One South title with the Ks in his second full season, whilst going as far as the Ryman Premier play-off final in 2009/10.

CAPTAIN’S COLUMN:

LEWISTOZER

THE CAPTAIN

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to today’s game with Kingstonian as we continue our battle for survival in the Ryman Premier League.

On a personal level, I’ve really enjoyed the past week after a difficult six weeks or so as I’ve been back out on the pitch.

I had a couple of weeks out suspended and have then missed four weeks with a hamstring injury, so it’s been really good to get back out with the boys for the games against Wealdstone and Margate in the past seven days.

Unfortunately, our fortune with the results hasn’t been quite so good, although there were a lot of positives that we could take out of our trip to Margate on Tuesday night.

I thought we were really unlucky not to get anything from the game, or even all three points, as the boys battled really well and dug in, but we just didn’t seem to get the rub of the green.

You might have heard that I even scored an overhead kick on Tuesday night, too!

I was delighted with that, but I will admit that I would genuinely have rather swapped that goal for a clean

sheet and three points all day long.

We all know that it is going to be another hard game coming up this afternoon as we face a Kingstonian side who are looking upwards at a promotion battle rather than below.

However, we have to believe in ourselves and all we can keep doing is grafting for each other - time is starting to run out this season now though and we really need to start picking up some

wins as soon as we can.

The one thing I am completely certain of though is that every one of the boys in that dressing room will work their socks off for each other and not one of us will throw the towel in.

Get behind the boys and let’s get three vital points today.

Enjoy the game,Lewis

We really need wins but I am certain the boys will work their socks off for each

other & keep on grafting away for results

THE PHYSIO

Welcome back for today’s game and welcome to all who have joined us from Kingstonian.

The last two defeats for us have been hard to take, with the games showing both the good and the bad side of our game.

We knew that we had a tough run of games with the Wealdstone one being the hardest of those but, even so, after the 2-0 defeat to them we felt that we had let ourselves down.

We failed to stick to the game plan throughout and realised that for the unit to work, we can’t afford individuals to stray from the plans.

As a group though we were well aware of what had gone wrong, so we have to just take that on the chin and move on, putting it right as we go forwards this season. On Tuesday we took a trip up to the sunny seaside (or not!) to take on Margate. The pitch was only just fit to play football on and we had several players missing from the squad, so we really needed to come out and put in a strong performance all over the park.

The group of players put in what I like to call a true Mead performance - effort, passion, commitment.

Anyone who made the trip saw the

conditions and saw two teams giving their all. The nicest way I can put it though is that the man in the middle has a nightmare.

I can’t remember us making more chances before and could have been a couple up at the break, but we have to take those chances - I really felt for the boys at the end and, with our luck this year, someone must have hit a black cat... after Tuesday, someone has reversed back over it!

It will be hard today but, as ever, I know the boys are up for the fight.

Enjoy the game,Alan

THE YOUTH TEAM:

THEY ALSOPLAY FOR US

A big well done goes out from everyone at the club to our U13s for their superb achievement this season on reaching the Kent County Cup final.

They will be playing Vinters in the final and I expect it to be a cracking game of football played by two very good sides. It would be fabulous if you could come down and support the lads on March 23rd at Salters Lane, home of Faversham Town, 10.30am kick off. Our U15s are also progressing well in both league and cup. They have a Kent County Cup quarter-final here at Bayliss Avenue tomorrow afternoon at 1pm. They will be taking on a Bromley side who they recently beat in the league and, if you want see a side play good football from front to back, come along tomorrow and support the team. You will soon see why they have only lost once this season in the league and sit top of the table! The U16s are really setting the pace in the Kent league this season, remaining unbeaten in the league having won all

games played. They travel to local rivals VCD in the league tomorrow, kicking off at 2pm. This will undoubtedly be a tough game for the boys, but I think they’ll come through with their record in tact. If you know the ground and fancy watching some good football between two teams then, again, please come along and back us. Our Ryman Youth team is another who are making good strides towards their league title. They travelled down to Corinthians last Tuesday evening with their hosts remaining unbeaten in the league so far.

Corinthians showed the form that had seen them unbeaten by taking a very early two goal lead, but the Mead managed to regain their composure and get back to level terms before half time. The second half would prove to be a much closer affair with only one goal in it and, fortunately, it went the way of Thamesmead. The boys are looking like the favourites to make the end of season play-offs that will determine the overall champions of the Ryman Youth League.

Next season we will be welcoming two new teams to the youth set up and both will be looking for new players and sponsorship.

If you’d like to get involved please contact either Mike Green or myself for more details. There will be one playing at U11s in the SelKent League, which is a very good local league. There will also be a team coming into the Kent League at U13s - the Kent League being a very good standard of football playing throughout the county. Finally, I finish with an appeal - are you running a team or looking to get into football at grassroots level? Would you like your team to play at a fabulous facility like Bayliss Avenue?

We are always interested in talking to new teams or coaches about becoming part of Thamesmead Town Football Club - we’d love to talk to you!

Cheers,Paul Turner

THE FEATURE

Mike Green brings us something a bit different this week, as we look back on the footballing news of the week that can all be connected.

The circle begins with the terribly sad news that a footballing knight has passed away aged 91. When you talk about post-war footballers, there are four or five names that always pop up - Wolves legend, Billy Wright; Stan Mortensen - the only man to score a hat-trick in an FA Cup final; Nat Lofthouse - the legendary Bolton striker; Sir Stanley Matthews - the wing wizard himself; Sir Tom Finney - a man who Bill Shankley once compared a star of the 80s to by suggesting, “He’s as good as him... but then he is nearly sixty now!”

Sir Tom sadly passed away on Valentines Day having been a one club man. He spent fifteen years at Preston, netting just under 200 goals, picked up 76 England caps and stayed as club president until his death.

Celebrating Sir Tom’s 90th birthday last year, Tommy

Docherty said: “Lionel Messi is just Finney reborn,” high praise indeed for a man who would spend the morning as a plumber before turning out for Preston.

He was a true legend of the game that we all love, and will be remembered forever.

As a player who was never paid more than £20 per week, what would Sir Tom have thought of the alleged £300,000 per week that Manchester United are offering Wayne Rooney to keep him at Old Trafford? How can anybody be worth that in any job, let alone one that you love doing? Even more so at the top where these players will stay in nothing but the best accommodation, free of charge - the money in football is frightening.

Economists have tried to compare Sir Tom’s wages to what Rooney is set to receive, and the results are staggering. Sir Tom’s wages equate to around £330 per week today, whilst Rooney would be pocketing £30 per Sir Tom Finney

minute! To put it another way, Rooney would earn more than Finney did in a week during a half-time break.

These figures have to serve as a warning that football has become a sport too heavily burdened by ridiculous amounts of money - and how long will the bubble last for these top players?

The average wage in the Premier League has doubled in the past six years according to Deloitte’s Sports Business Unit, with the average player now taking home £30,000 per week. An astonishing £1.66bn was spent on wages in the top flight alone during the 2011/12 season, with Manchester City committing £202m to wages. Swansea propped up the wages table, but still splashed out £35m to their playing staff.

A new television deal last summer ensured every club received c.£25m extra to further drive up wages at the top level. However, for the majority of professional footballers, life in the sport isn’t quite as rosy as that - it’s suggested by the Daily Star that 150 ex-players are currently in prison and 700 were out of a job at the end of last season.

According to the Office of National Statistics, the average annual income in the UK is £26,500 - so it’s not exaggerated in saying that the average Premier League player earns more in a week than you do in a year.

I wonder how long it will be before Joe Public will fully resent those levels of pay? The players are becoming increasingly elitist and the growing disillusionment will surely continue to grow.

When I first started watching Third Division football in the late 1970s, seeing players in the social bar was the

norm, not the exception. Nowadays, sadly, you only see those players in a sponsors’ lounge - season ticket holders won’t be buying your number nine a pint to discuss the game these days!

Despite all the money in football, it still has to be played on grass.

If clubs were more concerned with investing in their pitches rather than extortionate wage bills, would we have had half of these games called off?

Admittedly, the conditions of pitches have changed beyond all recognition over the past twenty years but, whether that’s for the good of the game is opening a new can of worms.

The top pitches are like billiard tables now; smooth and flat with

the ball running true, whereas a couple of decades ago, the pitches had all sorts of slopes on them!

This may come as a shock to younger readers, but Brian

Clough once led Derby to the title on a pitch resembling an allotment

patch. Pitches that were partly frozen would be played on and the goalkeepers simply given padded tracksuit bottoms - matches would even be played with standing water on the surface.

There is an iconic photo of an English footballing knight sending a sheet of spray up from a puddle - so times have changed. Why is the safety of players deemed more relevant today than at any other time in history, though? Different conditions can even make the game that bit more entertaining.

Oh, by the way, the footballing knight in the splashing puddle? It was none other than Sir Tom Finney - one of the greatest ever players of this fine game, who sadly passed away last week.

MATCH REPORT:

ACTION REPLAY

After the ground staff’s heroics in getting the game on in the first place, it was a desperately disappointing afternoon for the Mead last Saturday as promotion chasing Wealdstone secured a double and sent Keith McMahon’s side tumbling to their fourth successive defeat.

Indeed, the Mead haven’t won a league game since the 4-1 triumph over Maidstone at the end of January - a performance that saw the league award Thamesmead the Performance of the Month award prior to kick off.

Sadly, Thamesmead were caught cold and were behind after Michael Malcolm’s cool finish in the fourth minute and the game was settled by Sean Cronin’s thumping penalty ten minutes after half-time.

For the Mead, this was a desperately disappointing afternoon - one that left the Gaffer shaking his head at the final whistle.

It was a disastrous start for the home side as Wealdstone were ahead inside the first few minutes.

Full-back James Hammond did

brilliantly down the right and his cross into the middle found its way to Malcolm, whose sweet strike gave Sam Mott no chance in the home goal.

It was an early body blow that the Mead were not to recover from as the game developed.

Sam Mott produced a terrific save to deny Tom Pett before Luke Pigden was

denied by a great Lewis Tozer block with the visitors applying plenty of pressure.

At the other end, the Mead’s best first half chance fell to Junior Baker from a Derek Duncan corner, but the masked Baker (still recovering from a broken nose) couldn’t keep his header down.

Indeed, the first half was really

summed up by Wealdstone left back Jerome Okimo when he could have tested Mott in first half stoppage time, but he instead sliced his shot so much that is almost hit the corner flag.

The second half began encouragingly for the hosts and Shamir Mullings just couldn’t escape the reach of a Wealdstone defender in order to get a shot away.

Sean Roberts then drifted a free kick into the box that, having been picked up by the strong winds, left Wealdstone keeper Jonathan North very much relieved to see the

ball bounce into his hands with the rub of the green not quite falling for the Mead.

Shortly after came what was to be the killer second goal, as Pigden was

brought down inside the Mead’s eighteen-yard

box by clumsy and ill-timed challenge.

Visiting skipper Cronin stepped up to do the honours and gave Mott no

chance from twelve yards by

powering the ball into the net.

Wealdstone were the only side going to add to the score as Pett, Wright and

Malcolm were all denied by fabulous blocks from Baker and twice from Josh Hill, with the second a real class piece of defending.

The Mead thought they’d earnt their own penalty late on when Tozer was upended, but the referee wasn’t interested.

To prove that it wasn’t the Mead’s day, Rashid Kamara looked as though he’d played the skipper in during the closing stages only for the ball, for the first time in the game, to actually speed up rather than slow down in the mud!

It really wasn’t Thamesmead’s day, but there wasn’t time to stop and lick their wounds as on Tuesday they headed to Hartsdown Park for their twice postponed Kent derby with Margate.

So, the big clubs don’t care about the FA Trophy, eh?

Try telling that to the grand from Grimsby who filled the away end at Cambridge United for the first leg of their semi-final last Saturday.

It has become popular to bash Non-League football’s premier knockout competition, and our fans’ forum page in The NLP has been awash with letters criticising former Football League clubs’ attitudes.

OK, the early rounds might be played out to smaller crowds than league fixtures, but with season tickets not counting, this is the case in every cup competition the world over.

Some clubs might change their line-up, but as Luton manager John Still said earlier this season, he has a squad of players he believes can all do a job in the first-team, so a Trophy tie is a shop window for those boys to earn a regular spot.

More of Luton in a moment, because for starters, I want to reinforce Grimsby boss Paul Hurst’s praise of the thousand Mariners – 1,023 to be precise – who followed their team south last week.

If my end-of-season award for best away fans were to be handed out now, it would be to the Cleethorpes crew. On Tuesday January 28, almost 500 of them sang their hearts out in the same stand as their team became the first to win a league game at Cambridge this season. Many United fans described them as the best to visit the Abbey in years.

Less than three weeks later, more than double that amount bought tickets to see the first half of their bid to reach a second successive Trophy final.

Horrendous tailbacks on the A14 due to a lorry blown over in the gales meant some didn’t get into the ground until after half-time, but they still continued on their road to Wembley rather than turn around and go home.

That they had to watch their team turn in arguably their worst display of the campaign was a shame for them, but they sang their songs almost continuously for 95 minutes before Lenell John-Lewis’ injury-time header halved the advantage Ryan Bird had given Cambridge, and finally gave them something to cheer.

Of course, Grimsby’s main aim is to return to the Football League. But there is no big-time attitude at Blundell Park. If they can win the Trophy and go up, like York City – another ex-League club – did two years ago, that would be their Under-the-League utopia.

Their fans care about the ‘Tinpot Cup’, as I’ve heard the Trophy described, and from what I’ve seen over the last five seasons, so do Luton’s.

The best atmosphere I’ve sampled at Kenilworth Road was when the Hatters

hosted the second leg of their Trophy semi against Mansfield in 2010-11.

The majority of the 6,133 who turned out that day went home disappointed. But with their team reduced to nine men in the second half and extra-time, the Luton locals were the loudest I’ve heard them – even after Mansfield’s dubious 117th-minute penalty winner.

There will always be criticism, especially of the two-legged semi-final set-up and Saturday league games being moved.

But since 2006, only two finals – Stevenage v Kidderminster in 2007 and Darlington v Mansfield in 2011 – have not featured a club that has qualified for the play-offs or won the Conference title that same year.

And since the final returned to Wembley in 2007, only one – Barrow v Stevenage in 2010 – has not featured a recently-relegated Football League club.

So don’t let it be said the big clubs – and especially their fans – don’t care, because the evidence suggests otherwise.

THE MEAD MANOF THE MATCH

Since the East Thurrock United game here on October 5th when a Tyrus Gordon-Young goal sealed all three points for the Mead, the club have been awarding a Man of the Match.

Each home game, the award will be made by the Cooper family, pictured above, who have very kindly sponsored the Mead Man of the Match award for the rest of the campaign.

Our sincere thanks go to the family for their continued support, whilst the Man of the Match award winners are listed below - who will add their name to the list this time?

COMMERCIALCORNER

Now that it seems to have finally stopped raining, we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Kingstonian to Sporting Club Thamesmead this afternoon for the first time - we hope you’ll enjoy your brief stay with us and have a safe trip home.

A massive thank you to today’s matchday sponsors, Scarbutts Printers, who are also our programme printers from West Malling. We welcome Dave Boughton and his guests, hope you enjoy your afternoon and hope we get the same result as your last visit - Dave was our guest for the 4-1 win over Maidstone!

If you’d like to follow in Scarbutt’s steps, we only have two more home games without a sponsor so please see me as soon as possible.

Before our game last weekend, Keith was presented with the Macron Team Performance of the Month award for January, as featured on today’s programme cover, for the 4-1 win over Maidstone. In a season that has been a big struggle, a lift like this could prove a boost in our survival battle. As always, a big thank you to the Cooper family for their ongoing sponsorship of the Man of the Match award - despite not being here last Saturday, so I’m not sure then who is to blame for awarding Sean Roberts the Man of the Match (only joking, Sean)! Join us in the Mead Lounge after the game to see today’s presentation, which will take place at around 5.15pm.

Talking of the Mead Lounge, I had a meeting with the management of the centre and we’ve come up with some ideas to brighten it up and make it more homely for us - but I’d love to hear any ideas you may also have, so please come forward with any comments you might like to make. Things are really getting serious now on the pitch, and next here we welcome Enfield in a real six-pointer at the wrong of the table. Your support is vital so why not take advantage of our ‘bring a friend for a fiver’ offer? Please see the leaflets scattered around this afternoon. Enjoy the game,Greenie

EAST THURROCK UNITEDSaturday 1st March 2014 Kick-off: 3.00pm

SS17 9LB 22 miles 41 minutes

Go through the Dartford Tunnel and, at the next junction on the M25, take the third exit for the A13 east. After around seven miles, take the A1404 signposted Shell Haven and Coryton, turning right at the junction.

Stick to the A1404 until you see the signpost for a left turning for Corringham and Fobbing and, as you take the left onto Rookery Hill, you’ll see the club’s car park on your left behind the trees.

The Mead are back in action here at Sporting Club Thamesmead in ten days’ time for perhaps the biggest game of the season so far.

George Borg will bring his Enfield side to Bayliss Avenue in a crunch six-pointer at the foot of the table, in what is looking like a three-horse race for the last spot above the dreaded drop.

And, as far as the Mead are concerned, the Towners are hitting form at the wrong time - securing back-to-back wins without conceding a goal just

as Keith McMahon’s men have lifted themselves out of the bottom four.

A disastrous spell of fifteen league games without victory saw Borg’s side plummet from a comfortable mid-table position to second bottom at the turn of the New Year, but eleven points from six games has provided hope to an otherwise bleak horizon.

Whilst it spells trouble for the Mead and East Thurrock, Borg knows that his side are giving themselves every opportunity to steer clear of relegation

as the season draws to its conclusion.

“The turnaround has been fantastic and we are now looking above us at Thamesmead who’ve played several more matches than us,” he told the Enfield Independent.

“We have to take advantage of that and keep the pressure up on the teams above us.

“We have given ourselves a great chance of staying up and we will be fighting until the end of the season.”

George Borg
