From the MayorEach year the young participants who have taken part in the Young Endeavour Scheme return and report to council on their experience. Every time we witness how their confidence, enthusiasm and resilience has blossomed as a result of this journey.

There are many wonderful experiences available to young people growing up in the Upper Hunter but learning to sail a tall ship off the coast of Australia wouldn’t normally be one of them.

Each year with the support of individuals, businesses and community organisations, Upper Hunter Shire Council has been able to assist young people to take part in this challenging adventure.

I believe the Upper Hunter Shire Young Endeavour Scheme is an important investment in our future community leaders.

About the Young Endeavour Youth SchemeThe Young Endeavour Scheme is a not-for-profit organisation which provides young Australians with a unique, challenging and inspirational experience at sea.

Young Endeavour is the Bicentenary gift from the United Kingdom to the Government and people of Australia. Since 1988 the Young Endeavour Scheme, in partnership with the Royal Australian Navy, has offered outstanding training opportunities for over 11,000 young people.

In 1998, as a result of a youth forum held in Scone, the former Scone Shire Council initiated and has supported the scheme with the assistance of community and commercial sponsors. The scheme started with one community berth being offered. The scheme was continued in 2004 as part of the Upper Hunter Shire Council and began the sponsorship with four community berths. In 2010 the number of berths was increased to six.

Sponsorship covers the costs of the Upper Hunter Young Endeavour Scheme program, accommodation and travel expenses. Approximately $30,000 needs to be raised.

CHOOSE YOUR LEVEL OF SPONSORSHIPAll sponsors will be acknowledged in advertisements and media releases involving the scheme. You will also be invited to the Council meeting to hear the scheme’s participants give a presentation of their experiences.
