ABOUT THE CHALLENGE Submitted by Dale Turton

Great Cycle Challenge started in 2016, and after just 4 years, the event has grown to become one of the biggest cycling events across Canada.

People of all ages, abilities and from every province across the country set themselves a personal riding goal and challenge themselves to pedal throughout August to fight kids’ cancer.

In 3 years, our community of riders from all 13 provinces and territories have ridden a total of 10,294,551 kilometers, and together we raised $12,412,026 in support of research to develop treatments and find a cure for childhood cancer.

Why? Because cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in Canada. Over 1,400 Canadian children are diagnosed with cancer every year.

We're riding to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve, and we believe that any one individual can make their personal impact to fight cancer and save little lives.

So we’re calling on all Canadians to get on their bikes and join our movement to kick cancer’s butt!

Great Cycle Challenge is a national SickKids Foundation fundraising initiative held throughout August.

OUR VISION Our vision is a world without cancer where all kids are living life, not fighting for it.

I have personally rode over 400klms at this writing and will continue to ride for the rest of August. I would like to thank all that have made donations for this cause. The challenge continues to the end of August and donations are welcome.

SUMMER IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR Submitted by Jocelyn Hainsworth

Well folks, that’s almost a wrap!

The summer of 2020 has been quite the ride, hasn’t it? Although one would have to admit that it was a fitting follow up to the spring of 2020, and with the cases of Covid-19 staying in check (in our neck of the woods, at least) hopefully we will head into the fall and winter ahead of us safely and prepared for what might be in store. Only time will tell.

As did everyone else this year, Tourism started out 2020 with full expectations of our usual season, then had to readjust to cancelling the whole thing, and then had to scramble to piece together a kind of half season when the restrictions began to lift in June. It felt like a rollercoaster ride there for a while, but we are satisfied that we were able to accommodate campers, welcome the Farmer’s Market, and serve our visitors at the Log Cabin. Although it was a much scaled down facsimile of a regular summer, it almost felt normal when a person got a taste of our signature Saskatoon pie and ice cream.

It was only by happenstance that we ended up doing a couple major projects this summer. We had already made plans to refurbish the outdoor kitchen; the slow season only made the work easier to accomplish. Doesn’t it look great? We will be applying stain next year – the wood needs to age a bit first. The other big change was the removal of the ancient and dilapidated willows around the gazebo area. Don’t worry, it’s not going to be left that way, we are in the process of deciding which tree species are best to give us fast growth, a pretty background, and be able to tolerate wet conditions as it is a low spot. We are open to suggestions i f you have any ideas to help us out.

The flowers in our baskets, planters, and gardens were purchased at Quennelle’s Greenhouse this year. Considering the hurricane force winds in June and the heat of late summer, they have managed to survive and even flourish.

Obviously 2020 has not been a spectacular year, budget-wise. The cancellation of our usual fundraisers – the 50/50 draw on Canada Day, our annual quilt raffle, and our much smaller merchandise offering, has left us dipping into savings to pay bills – just like many other businesses in town, I imagine. We appreciate the support of all who have been there for us and especially the Advantage Coop Food Store who have offered us $1.00 from the sale every roast chicken they sell during the month of September. So remember – not only is an instant meal a great idea during busy harvest time, but you will be helping Tourism out as well! There will also be a donation jar set up if you care to contribute that way. Both Tourism and Coop say “Thank You” in advance!

Last, but not least, Tourism still has the fireworks we ordered for Canada Day. Nothing is for sure yet, but if it works out we will be donating them to end off the Winterfest activities in December. We shall see if Covid-19 lets us end 2020 on a happy, hopeful note!

SEPTEMBER 2020 HAVEN HAPPENINGS

Full cooperation from Mother Nature for an exceptional August must be acknowledged! Was it not wonderful to have so much heat and sun shine? The residents were able to enjoy oh so many visitors and musical entertainment. Here’s to hoping more accommodating weather is in store – please.

The rumor circulating in July was almost true – we had 2 donkeys come to visit. Weather permitting Angela may bring her horses one day soon.

Remember the wreath Haven Activities was gifted to raffle. Donated by Danni George, volunteers Beth George and Elsie Martin did a great job selling tickets, often at the Advantage Grocery Store. A testament to this great community that is exceptional when it comes to supporting its own, Beth and Elsie reported people ‘threw’ money into the kitty once they learned it was for the haven. We made the draw August 12th ! The winner being Joanne Wiszniak. We were overwhelmed by their efforts and your SUPPORT. Thank you!!

Our manager Polly Godenir was asked to drop by a friend’s house to collect another donation. Chloe George with friend Sophie Martin spent a couple of days in the hot sun providing cool refreshments to those who passed by. These little girls have learned from their community to support others – what a beautiful gift – and rewarding too – their tidy sum was very much appreciated.

Outside visitors means we can have music, music, music! We have 2 great guys who go out of their way to entertain us. Phil Wilk from right here in Redvers and Ed James from Elkhorn, MB.

Redvers Health Centre recently received a certificate of appreciation from the Alzheimer’s Society of Saskatchewan in recognition of over 20 years of support. In that time over $2000 was raised through Coffee Break and Anything for Alzheimer ’s events. The Health Centre may have received the certificate but it belongs to ALL of YOU for your faithful support of the events held. Thank you and congratulations on a job well done!
